Subject: amIright Idle - Second round entries
OK, you must get your entries in by Friday morning, at 6 AM. To insure everyone has to write a parody, I picked a topic no one has covered yet. Christopher Walken. http://us.imdb.com/Name?Walken,+Christopher
Why Christopher Walken? well.. the way, he talks, is somewhat funny, don't you think? He was host of Saturday Night Live last week, plus he's been in more movies than I can count. (Pulp Fiction, Catch Me If You Can, Sleepy Hollow, Antz, Mouse Hunt, Pulp Fiction, Wayne's World 2, A View to a Kill, Pennies From Heaven) and the most excellent music video by Fatboy Slim, "Weapon of Choice".
Subject: Re: amIright Idle - Second round entries
i guess its kind of good for me that im not in this anymore since i would be stumped on that one (even though i probably wouldve looked at the bio until i thought of something dumb to write). good luck to everyone in this round it seems you'll need it with this topic.

He's a good subject, I'm sure: I remember the face, and the voice - but can't think of any parody material at all...

Um.
Subject: Re: amIright Idle - Second round entries
hehehe.. gotta seperate the men from the boys with this one..
of course, since I'm going to only eliminate one person a round, all you have to do at this point, is avoid writing the worst parody. I think I initally stated I was going to drop two people in the second round, but that seems a bit harsh, so we'll stick to dropping one a round.
I'm also pretty sure there's going to need to be research done by contestants and judges alike on this one. I think there's a certain value to having to come up with a parody based on something you previousily knew nothing about. If Christopher Walken was to do something newsworthy today, and you were writing parodies for a radio station, you'd need to come up with a lot of stuff from scratch really quickly.

my God, I never knew this...Chris Walken went to the same college as i am going to now! Man, .....now what the hell am I gunna write....I was thinking of parodying Fats Domino's "Im walkin", but I cant make it sound good.....darn
Subject: Re: amIright Idle - Second round entries
alright, I think this is what Im gunna do, to the tune of ABBA's "Dancing queen", "Dancing scene"

It's a bugger of a song to parody, too: not helped by the way it's remixed - I've downloaded the video and a couple of (different-sized) copies of the MP3, and they're all slightly different in the way the stanzas are put together. Might be worth it, if I can figure a suitable alternative for "Halfway between the gutter and the stars"...
Phil
Subject: Re: amIright Idle - Second round entries
Having said it was a bugger of a song to parody, I've just submitted what will probably be my entry, called "Baddie of Choice"... it just had to be done, I guess.
If anyone's still got problems getting info about CW, there's an excellent recent interview from the Daily Torygraph www.telegraph.co.uk - search for the article: "Abominable showman" (Filed: 15/02/2003). You do need to register to be able to view it, however.
This is an extract which might inspire a parody (it's the reason for the "probably" above):
Quoting:When he was 16, Walken had a job at a small, single-ring circus in the north-eastern United States. There he performed a lion-taming act with a 'very sweet' elderly lioness called Sheba. How close would he have to get to her? 'Very close - as close as we are now.' Although he is sitting a couple of feet away, it feels close enough. 'She was so well-trained,' he remembers fondly. 'She was like a dog, a big German shepherd. I would do a little thing and she would go...' he mimes lying on his back with paws in the air. The act, Walken explains, was 'a gimmick'. The actual lion-tamer, who also owned the circus, would finish his own performance with more ferocious big cats. Then Walken would come in, dressed identically, pretending to be his son, and be left alone with Sheba. So he was kind of like Mini-me, Mike Myers's tiny doppelganger in Austin Powers?
'I was a version!' Walken nods delightedly. 'Back when I was a version...' By now he is pronouncing the word to make it sound like 'virgin', as if remembering himself in the Madonna song. 'Like a version, touched for the very first time.'
End Quote
Another nice quote from CW:
Quoting:'It's my training,' Walken shrugs. 'I don't know much about acting, but I know a lot about performing, and that word you're not supposed to use, "entertaining", that's what I really know about.'
End Quote
Me, I reckon he knows a lot about acting, too :-)
Thanks for the subject, Chucky

Chuck, do I just submit my Chris Walken parody to Amiright like usual, for the second round? Royce Miller
Subject: Re: amIright Idle - Second round entries
I'm pleased to give a Christopher Walken parody a try. I think it's a challenging subject, and regarding Chuck's earlier comment about separating the men from the boys, well, you can throw a woman in there, too. I know my name sounds like a man's, of course, but since I'm in this second round, I'll just come clean.

so have you settled on this for your entry yet? I just updated the Idle page, but was unsure wether you were going to use this entry, or write another.. I'm perfectly ok with people writing a quick parody, or a couple, waiting a day to see the votes/comments, and then picking their stronger parody.. so long as you can do it before the deadline

Not, yet - I've just submitted "Walken in Batman" to the tune of "Walking on Sunshine", which is definitely funnier (well, it talks about Walken's defenstration of Michelle Pfeiffer, and her reappearance in a skin-tight catsuit :-)) - but for some reason, I still prefer the first one, probably because I love the video, but it's much less accessible.

Subject: Re: amIright Idle - Second round entries
well.. there's five on the page now, and Jeff is submitting his tomorrow.. not a peep yet from the last two authors..
and positive voting results on all the entries so far.. all about the same rating too.. if all the entries are submitted, this could be very, very close.
I didn't specify what would happen if someone missed the deadline.. basically, that person would get eliminated, and everyone else could make it on to the next round.
I will announce the next topic tomorrow afternoon, to give everyone a full week to write their next parody.. of course, whoever loses this week, won't have to write another parody, but they won't know until Monday.. I didn't think it would be fair to announce it last Friday considering how many entries there were (I didn't want 18 people writing parodies that didn't necessarily want to)..

you have until midnight on Friday to post the URL.. if you want, send me a private message with the name of the song, and when it goes up in the morning, I'll post the URL in the thread and on the page..
my biggest concern, is making sure the person who submitted the parody to the website, is really the person entered into the contest (since I don't use a username/password system on the parody submission). I also want to make sure I only post the proper parody (some people have written multiple parodies before they submit their final one)

judging from the results from the first two judges, I'd say the effort was well worth it anyways, I think you have the highest combined score so far (at least the reviews looked the most favorable).
I updated the contest page with the judging results so far. I'm sure I'll get the last set in a little while so we can at least see who scored best.
