Subject: Chucky - just an idea
How about adding similar links as 'other parodies by this artist', like:
Other parodies of this song
Other parodies of the original artist
And possibly making some links to sections with related parodies, like:
All polotical parodies
All christmas parodies
All McDonalds parodies
All duet/trio/etc. parodies
Those are just ideas anyway, take em, use em, leave em, eat em and then spit them out into a garbage can, change em, whatever :P
Subject: Re: Chucky - just an idea
I like the second idea. However, what I always did was check Parody, Search, Original Band Name. Searching for the word Beatles gives me 151 results. Of course, the other option from this is... when I Search for Artist: Beatles, and come up with lots of results, sorted by Original song name, everything is hyperlinked to the actual parody itself. For example, when I click on "Baby You're a Rich Man, The Beatles, Al Gore You're A Rich Man, Darryl X, there could be some way of hyperlinking to the parody artist, given that there's new parody artist pages up. I know it's a bit of work, but it just occured to me when reading this.

Isn't that going to crash the site? I think that is why Chuck had to get rid of Misheard Lyrics by Title and Decade (I think those are correct.)

I like all those idea, I can probably do the original artist/song links.. I can probably due a little work on the script I just wrote for the parody artist script to make it work.. I think I also want to add the search box at the bottom of the index page, so that if it only pulls up one entry, people can look for something else...
the other idea, I've been wanting to do for ages.. the problem though, is time and size of the database.. there's around 5,000 song parodies on the site now (which I just find amazing, since there were only like 10 on the site 2 years ago). imagine trying to find and categorize all the parodies dealing with politics (aside from an obvious search for William Tong).. I'm not really sure how to tackle that..

if you click on the "other parodies by this artist" link at the bottom of the page, you essentially get the parody artist page.. since I made sure to check for a parody artist bio page and include it if it exists..

the reason I got rid of those sections had more to do with a really crappy website provider I used to use.. they monitored my bandwidth like a hawk and charged me an arm and leg for it.. those extra pages used to draw a lot of search engine results, and the decade pages were rather large, so it added a lot to my bill..
I could actually bring them back, but I haven't even been able to update the existing archive pages with the new entries in so long, it doesn't seem worth the effort.. plus the search function is always there if you're looking for something in particular (I should probably highlight the fact that there is search on the site)..
talking about search.. I thought about writing a universal summary page, that would say list misheard lyrics, and links to parodies, dumb lyrics, etc. based on a song or artist.. so if you like stuff that makes fun of Britney Spears, you could just check out the Britney Spears page every day.. it wouldn't be perfect (if people misspelled something, and the editors didn't catch it, it wouldn't show up) but it might still be useful..

I getcha, it's essentially only one extra click away anyway.

Oh I thought of another idea, though it may be tricky to rig up. How about something in each song that says what its highest rating on a chart (if it got there) was. And possibly when it was there. ANyway just a thought.

that might be possible.. it would require me to write something to figure out what the voting results are for each day of the past two years (in order to figure out which parodies scored what), and then write a datafile for each parody based on whether it made the charts at some point.. it can be done, and I could probably do it.. I could even make a spin off, and create a history page of voting results for the past two years (like my own little Billboard charts type of thing)
I think it's a little low priority for me at the moment though.. I think most people would prefer a commentary section right now.. which is what I would like to focus on

consider it done (because I did it!).. I link it to the search engine for the parodies.. there parody search engine isn't perfect (search for ABBA and see what you get), but it does work well enough for this I think..
it's kinda neat really.. you can search for Billy Joel, click on a parody, and then click on the author's name if you liked it, and check out other parodies, etc. It's a nice way to tie all the data together..

I agree. Nice one, Chucky! (I get a feeling of deja vu, here ;-))

yeah I know, it takes awhile before I agree to do the good ideas sometimes doesn't it? >grin<
but then again, it's better that several people express interest in a function, than just one, because then I know it's something that might be used if I actually code it..

Very nice, it's gonna work good to make viewers keep looking at stuff.
As for the 'highest rating' thing, did you say it would be possible to figure out what was rated what in the past 2 years? I thought maybe that would be impossible and it would just count from now on, but if you can do the previous ones that sure would be sweet.
Oh hey Chucky, let me know if there's anything I can do with helping the site, I'm here every day and would be glad to put some effort into helping you out with whatever:)

I didn't mean my hassling for functionality - I was thinking about having written "Nice one Chucky" two or three times in a day or two. But you know how it is: you wait ages for a good idea to be programmed in, then all of a sudden three come along at once ;-)

it's amazing I got anything done at all lately.. I'm pretty busy at work and I've got an art class that tends to suck away a lot of my time.. guess it goes to show you that you planning on doing work is just not practical, you just have to strike whenever you can

yeah.. one of the reasons I wrote the voting system the way I did, was so that I could later write something to reconstruct voting history (hence the timestamps).. I don't know that it would be very fair to just start tracking something like that, without looking backwards too..
if history is any indication, I'll probably think about this on and off for a few months and then just get up one morning and code it.. seems like if it's a good idea, if I wait and still think it's a good idea a few weeks later, it's probably worth coding..
