Subject: What can I do to improve amiright?
for the past year or so, I've tried to increase the size and scope of the site beyond just misheard lyrics and song parodies... problems with my website providers forced me to scale back my dreams for awhile, and forced me to remove some sections (now back, like the real lyrics).. but it looks like those concerns are now behind me...
my mission statement, has been that I want to be the National Lampoon of the music industry.. not just a misheard lyrics site.. which is a pretty big desire really.. of course, it's been awhile since I've read National Lampoon, so I'm not even really sure what that means..
I've been thinking of a couple of ideas:
1: strange music news.. kinda like fark.com where people suggest links, but devoted to only music.. I tried this with 80s news, but it wasn't the rousing success I hoped it would be
2: Editorials poking fun of bands and the music industry.. this I would have to write myself.. but maybe if I got high quality submissions, I could expand to guest writers
3: Comic strips? I'm no artist.. so this would have to be someone who wants to do a strip themselves.. but who would want to do something like that on my site instead of starting one of their own?
4: More sections like the existing ones.. I posted a couple of ideas last month, which I should be bringing online in a few days (like what happens when you combine two songs).. should I try rolling out more sections each month/week? would that be confusing and distract people too much?
5: Bigger back history for sections other than misheard lyrics and song parodies? Right now, I only display the last ten or twenty entries for most sections, unlike the aforementioned sections where I break it down by day added to the site.. do people want a better way to re-visit their favorite sections?
6: More user-feedback sections? Right now, there's not really any feedback sections for people to talk about various pages, except for this messageboad.. I know people don't really vote on parodies, but maybe a comment section for those (which has been discussed a little already)
7: Games? The messageboards here have been busy with various types of games (word scrambles and such).. I have been doing a random song lyric every day on the front page, but not many people try their hand at it.. maybe something more intense is wanted for the site?
8: More factual data? The Peudonyms and Band Name Origins seem to have been very popular.. is there more along these lines people would like to see?
9: Something I haven't mentioned above? If you want to see something, let me know! The site is a collabrative effort.. Most of what you see on the site was entered by site visitors, and several of the sections were suggested by site visitors.. Did you see something on another site that you think I should do here? etc.
I really want to grow not just the size of the site, but the overall traffic.. the more people who visit, the more people who submit new ideas, the more there is to see
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
lol, funny I was just about to post an idea for a page on the site before I seen this. anyways, how about a section where people can like throw a little freestyle battle and have people to vote on the winner, but then there's problems with the voting on the parodies. or maybe something where people submit their lyrics or peoms or whatever to get some exposure online.
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
I like all of the ideas really, except for maybe creating an entire section for the "two song into one" idea. I am a big advocate of the comment section at the bottom of each parody, letting people comment on why they voted the way they did. I think you could get people to write editorials as well, and considering I'm looking into the journalism field, I might try my hand at one. I also like the "bigger back histories" you mentioned. All in all, I say "Go for it", when it comes to expanding the site.
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
I think all your ideas are pretty good too. If you really want to improve a site of yours, I'd try "In The '90's," by adding some more of the features that already exist on your "In The '80's" website. In the music section for example, you can add some '90's covers and covers of '90's songs. When you decide to do so, I'll start by adding Aaron Lewis's cover of Pearl Jam's "Black."
;)
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
I have an idea. Under the song parodies section, maybe you could have a section of parody tips and stuff on writing parodies. A few artists (or you) could start the section, and you could have people submit tips as well. You never know.. you could have more parody artists here, because if people are reading the tips and stuff, they could get interested in writing their own.

Tap into the filk community. You and they (we) are working in parallel. The talent here could greatly benefit it, and vice versa.
Filk music, for those who don't know, is "the folk music of fandom", including parodies and original music. Filkers usually meet at conventions (comic, movie, sci-fi) to perform and trade songs, but the movement is now shifting to filk for its own sake.
Most people here are true filkers, they just don't know it!
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
i was looking for somewhere else to submit the filk-like stuff i've submitted here (somewhere more filk specialized) but i couldnt find anywhere. Any suggestions?

Chucky, what you could do to improve this site would be to get a deal with VH-1... sort of like "Pop up Video" but maybe smaller in scope.
Idea would be an occasional "scrolling banner" at the bottom of VH1 screen, showing a recent and hilarious ;D misheard lyric, with also a link to your site.
Or how about a "Pop Up Video" special that features the most classic "misheard" songs? That would be cool. 8)
Benefits? VH1 gets some cool and quirky entertainment content. AMIRIGHT.COM gets huge increase in site volume and ADVERTISERS would beat down your door to place ads at this site. ;D

filk is generally geared to the sci-fi/fantasy community.. song parodies based on popular songs, but about Babylon 5 or Star Trek for instance.. or they can be purely original compositions about Star Trek... the name is supposed to be derivative of folk, as in folk music...
I've debated wether I should court the filkers more, but not really sure if it fits within the general scheme of the site.. I've been trying to gear towards music humor more than just music writing in general... plus as a couple people mentioned, there are filk sites devoted to just filk music, and I don't want to try and compete with larger older sites like that.. plus I don't know wether people would get defensive about a more general purpose site like this one trying to get involved with the filk community...

Columbia House recently used misheard lyrics in one of their catalogs they sent my mother.. and didn't credit any source.. so if VH-1 was going to do something like that, I'm sure they'd do the same thing.. If you search the board archives, you'll see my grousing about the lack of credit for lifting ideas from this site before, so I'm not in a real rush to approach them, since I'm sure I'll get the shaft..
plus, I'm not in a real rush to do advertising again.. sure it would be nice to recoup my operating costs, but the ad market right now is filled with too many slimeballs.. they all want extremly obtrusive ads, popups, popunders, those javascript window things that install spyware.. as long as I can keep my budget to around a $100 loss each month, I'm happy.. I just use it as one more excuse not to get a cellphone (gee, I'd get a cellphone, but I spend money on my website instead)...

inthe90s and inthe70s are both in need of some serious work, I agree.. I need to do some work so I can let Junior start reading the backlog of submissions for the 90s site before I even consider new pages.. it's going to happen at some point.. maybe in a few weeks..

I've been thinking about this for a very long time.. almost since I added the parodies to the site.. if any parody authors are reading this, and think they could write an article or two, I'll gladly start a section...
this kinda falls into the article category I mentioned above.. I'd love to get funny stories about groups, or fan obsessions, etc.. I think it would really add some depth to the site..

which leads me to think there aren't a lot of filkers hitting the site, since there's a huge Babylon 5 following online..

I'd like to write that sort of article: kind of a how-to/do's and don'ts of parody writing - I have some quite precise views on what makes a good parody, and how to get there... I've started (on a couple of occasions) an article about parodies for the hitch-hikers guide project (www.h2g2.net - worth a visit), and that was before I even knew about amiright. Tell you what, you get somewhere to put it, and I'll get an article written, provided you don't mind me also submitting it to H2G2 (with suitable links to amiright.com, of course ;-))

I don't believe in "exclusive" content.. I appreciate if people post things here first (might be easier to gauge feedback about the content), but all I ask is that people only submit their own stuff.. it's your work and I'm just providing a forum for exposure.. (ie. I can't pay you anything)
I have checked out H2G2 and it's very cool.. nice to see Douglas Adams name used with something like that.. I'd love to see them make a downloadable version for your oragnizer.. it would be the ultimate realization of Mr. Adams vision..
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
how about something to link to people who have mp3's of their parodies? Due to bandwidth concerns, I couldn't readily host them on the site, but maybe a section where we link to content on other sites.. anyone have any good ideas on where to go with this one?
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
This is my idea: Have a section where you try to determine the meaning of certain songs. You could have people send it what the meanign or message of a song is.
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
As for the "how to do a good parody" thing, you should have a section where people send in things they consider bad ideas for certain songs. Like: parodies, love songs, rock songs, xmas songs" whatever.
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
This probably sounds stupid, but why dont you increse the weekly voting charts to the top ten songs instead of top five, and the overall charts to 100 instead of fifty. well just my opinion...
Subject: Re: What can I do to improve amiright?
Oh yeah, and also, you should make a link for getting back to the new entries page or the search page after reading the parody.

that's probably not a bad idea
increasing the number of parodies in the top 5 and top 50 listings, I can probably do that.. I think the numbers are as low as they are, because the site didn't used to be quite so busy.

...you'd just have to put "Don't panic" in big friendly letters on the cover ;-) But I don't know how many organizers have *that* much memory :-(
re: an article on writing parodies - It's growing every time I try putting an idea onto paper (well, into Word, anyway), but I'll try and get it finished by the end of the week.
I've also just tried recording "Are you drinking tonight" over the karaoke Elvis track - it's here http://www.cix.co.uk/~philbo/PhilsParodies-AreYouDrinkingTonight.mp3 if anyone wants a listen... Having got the hang of the Dart Karaoke studio, it should be a breeze to record some more of them (before the demo times out)
So much to do, and so little time to do it in

Hey, Chuck. The one improvement we desperately need is for the urls to the song parodies written underneath the parodies, in case we ever need the urls (I do now, and you would not believe the trouble I am going through because of it :-(). I'd really appreciate it. :)
