Subject: 2 misheard lyrics

Written By: Lydia on 08/08/02 at 02:47 a.m.

I've just found this web site and have a couple of questions:

In the 70s in Britain, there was a song called "Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs" about the artist Lowry, but I don't remember who sang it - does anyone know?

Anyway, some of the lyrics sound like:

And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs
He painted kids on the corner of the street with their sparking plugs

Now that can't be right ... does anyone know the correct lyrics?

Another song, I think from the 60s is Silver Machine (I don't know the artist of this one either, excuse my ignorance).  Anyway, part of the lyrics sound like:

I've got a sewing machine

which should be:

I've got a silver machine

Does anyone know the artist?  Thanks.

It was released by Brian & Michael in 1978.  It has backing vocals by St Winifred's School Choir (Grandma)

Quoting:
And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs
He painted kids on the corner of the street with their sparking plugs
End Quote

We call them 'sparkplugs'!
I think the correct lyrics are.. "Kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs"

I always preferred the Barron Knights version about the kid with a spray can: "and he painted Granddad's bike and next door's cats and dogs"

Hawkwind.  I've always felt like doing a parody to Silver Machine... maybe someday soon.

Sparking Plugs?  No

sparking clogs.  To make them last longer, clogs had metal pegs in the base - a forerunner of studs.  These literally 'sparked' when they were scraped on the ground.
