Subject: does anyone have a chance at making top 50 anymore

Written By: Tone-Def on 07/27/02 at 06:44 p.m.

There's gotta be some way to get more votes for songs. you need like 80 votes to be considerd for the to 50 and i've never gotten more than 7 for any partcular song. I think this might partially be because songs disappear after one day but i'm not sure how songs got hundreds of votes even if they were on for a week. Or maybe those songs were just more deserving of getting votes than the ones of posted here but i have a bunch of songs that have all fives but just one vote (i don't vote for my own songs) Any idea how to fix this problem?

Well, on top of every parody I think Chuck put a notice saying "When you read a parody, vote for it!"  That might help..

I vote on all the parodies I can, but if I don't know the original pacing I don't vote for it (unless I only know the chorus orsomething, then I'll go ahead and vote).

Uh-oh... Perhaps we have a payola scandal here?  (just joking).  As we say in Chicago, vote early and vote OFTEN!!!! :P

well, the whole question of voting has always been a little problematic.. at one point I was highlighting the best voted on parodies, but it seemed to favor hot-button topics a little too heavily, and it also encouraged a few people to inflate their votes by getting around the few security measures I tried to put in place..

I think what is helping some of the older parodies, is that they have keywords that people search for using search engines, which is increasing the amount of views they get..

if the parodies stayed on the front page longer than a day, with the current rate of submissions, the page would be, well as long as the two week listing.. about three or four pages worth at least..

I know from looking at the top 50, nothing has recently entered it, but a couple of the songs in the top 10 were added in the last six months.. I think I can figure out a way to make a version of the voting screens with the date added to the site, I'll have to think about how to cross-reference the data files to do it.. but it might be interesting to see when various songs were added..

I'm not sure what songs you have done, haven't checked on that yet.  When parodying, if you want more votes, try to do songs that a lot of people know, such as songs that are played on the radio a lot.  I've noticed that,  the songs that been released get more votes and faster.

Yeah, that's what I do.  (Except lately, I've been doing a lot of 80s songs.)  A lot of the songs I've done were popular at the time I wrote them.

i generally do songs released recently but they tend to max out at  about 6 votes

I believe that certain songs that have spent a long time in the top 50. They should go to a Stall of Fame (there's a bathroom on the right, am I not correct?)
I have some suggestions

"Frozen" by DarkJon64
"Electorial Rhapsody" by Kevin Dunlap
"Bong Song" by S.T.G.
and others

well, to show how out of touch I was on submissions, there's only two entries from 2002 that have cracked the top 50 so far..

http://www.amiright.com/parody/temp/overall50.html
http://www.amiright.com/parody/temp/pacing50.html
http://www.amiright.com/parody/temp/funny50.html

maybe in addition to the top50 of all time, I should do a top50 for the past year? not really sure.. The reason I have a top50 weekly and top50 monthly, is because I don't think the older parodies are looked at as much anymore.. but by the same token, I think there should be a list of the most voted on parodies, regardless of how long they have been on the site..

oh, and before anyone asks, parodies that were added to the site prior to December 2000, are listed as December 2000.. I used to do everything by hand up until that point.. the songs by Chris Pyhtila have been on the site since 1996 (if you count them being on inthe80s and it's earlier incarnations)

I have to agree with Tone-Def that there is a little problem in getting people to vote for parodies.  One of my songs has a 5.0 rating in all categories, but only has 5 votes.  It has been on the site for nearly a month now.  Of the 6 or 7 songs I have submitted, the most votes that any song has received is 8.  I'll try to brainstorm and see if I can think of any ingenious way to solve this.   :P

Looking at some of mine (I've got >60 up there now, with a huge range source songs and subjects), the following seems to hold true:
1. people don't vote for parodies when they don't know the original - e.g. my "Duke of Plaza Toro" Gilbert & Sullivan parody still has zero votes (but my parents liked it, and they do know the original so that's enough for me) - occasionally, there's a parody that makes you go out and find the original song (Taoist's "Cooped up in Ramallah" made me go and find "Far side of crazy" - don't particularly like the original, but it's a very good parody), but that's extremely unusual.

2. my only "current top 10" parody (actually a parody to Supertramp's "The Logical Song", but there's a sort of cover version in the charts at the moment) accumulated votes quicker than any other of mine recently, and is the only song of mine to feature on the voting results.  This doesn't have any real relation to how good the parody is, it's just that for a brief moment in time it's more accessible.

3. Provocative titles don't necessarily mean more votes: I thought my "Plea for the Spice Girls to get back together" would gain more interest, and the Beatles' "Ballad of John and Yoko" should be well-known enough for a few votes, but it's only just got into double figures

Maybe the best way of getting votes would be to find some well-visited messageboards and do a bit of self-publicity...

all great points, but I think the last one is probably most important.. I know one of the reasons William Tong gets as many votes as he does, is due to the following he has with his existing website, and his requests for the people who visit his site, to visit mine and vote on his parodies..

whenever I run the stats on the site, it appears as though most of the new parodies are getting read every day, just that no one bothers to vote after they read them.. that's what puzzles me the most..

my biggest fear, is that the increasing amount of parody submissions are going to increase to a point, where there's too many posted each day for someone to read the new submissions in a sitting. I try and filter our the profane and really bad written parodies (partial song parodies have their own section, but people still try and get them entered into the main section)... as it is, I only get to skim the new entries.. if I spent a minute reading each one, a day like today where there were 20 entries, would be around 15 minutes, which is a decent chunk of time..

what it really comes down to is this: Good parodies should be recognized.  Voting is useful for some feedback to the original authors, but is not useful for ranking parodies to determine the best. The rate at which things are going, there will be an average of 500 parodies a month accepted to the site within a month or two.  Not to mention the fact, that summer is usually the slowest time of year, so September might be very busy..

so yes, I'm open to suggestions for alternatives.. Slashdot, which is a techie website devoted to Linux fanatics, has an interesting system, where people rotate being moderators, and score the posts as to their interest level.. maybe I could appoint a posse of people who would review the entries, and boost the scores of parodies they think are notable.. lots of potential for abuse of course

I could try and track how often various parodies are accessed, of course I'm sure some pathetic loser would then hit their own parody over and over again..

Yep, the main reason I want people to vote for my parodies is to let me know how they liked it.  It kinda pisses me off when I spend a week writing a parody and I get 2 votes..

Another possible thing to get more votes would  be if chucky could get well known humor websites to link to AmIright. If bored.com listed it it would probably do wonders for votes.

After submitting here for over a month i finally got 10 votes on a song (slightly over 2 weeks old). Another 80 or so and it'll make the top 50.

To try and remedy that particular situation, I've just submitted a "Who let the dogs out" parody entitled "You, get ya votes out", exhorting people to vote for the parodies ;-)

I've been thinking of one to do for that topic, to-- I've finally settled on "Vote For My Parody" to the tune of "It's Still Rock & Roll to Me" by Billy Joel.

:-) I have to admit I got the inspiration from Chucky putting "Get your votes out" at the top of the page.  Having seen that, there wasn't much option as to which song to use.

I like your parody, Phil.. but where's mine?  I swore I sent it in yesterday.. it was clean.. I didn't insult anyone, just praised.. Chuck?  ???

Maybe the "get out and vote" message didn't work (not many votes at all for "Get Ya Votes Out"), but... I've actually got *two* songs in the voting results: "Bare Celebrities" in the weekly, and "Allergic To Cats" in the monthly!!!

Whoopee for me ;-)

Phil
PS It might be quite a slog before I can say I've got one in each of the three categories, but I can dream, can't I?

When I see the list of new songs on the main page, there's no indication of the real song, so I only look at the one or two that are apparent from the title. Adding which song it parodies should help.

also a banner at the bottom of each parody that says "if you liked it, vote for it!". I think the hall of fame is also a good idea.
Will we ever reach a point where american pie, bohemian rhapsody and the 12 days of christmans will be banned on sight?   :P
