Subject: Ideas for new pages

Written By: ChuckyG on 07/15/02 at 02:08 p.m.

I've almost got all the sections back under control.. since I'm not the only one reading the tons of entries (big thanks out to the new editors)... so I found a list of the page ideas I had shelved until I got more time.. since I know Junior's going to want a few more pages, it's time to start a few more.. I don't know when I'll get around to starting any of them, but I'm sure I can get a few done soon..

these entries were submitted by various people ages ago, no idea who sent me what, so if one is your idea, sorry I didn't credit you..

1)  bad choices for onhold music, "Baby Come Back" on a missing child hotline for instance

2)  good choices for commercials (that haven't been done yet), I think I did a page like this on the 80s site, but it's no longer around

3)  parody duet titles. For example: Amy Grant & Sheena Easton: "If These Sugar Walls Could Speak". Or Jimmy Buffett & Willie Nelson: "Wasted Away Again In Marijuanaville". Or Manfred Mann & Melissa Etheridge: "Blinded By A Dyke".

4)  lyrical rhymes that should be outlawed due to overuse. Examples would be "love" rhymed with "(stars, skies, up) above", or "in the air" rhymed with "just don't care"...

5)  under parodies: change one word of a song to totally change the meaning.. maybe do it like the mad libs with two or three lines of a song..

6)  bad career moves: like George Harrison trying to do country

7)  change every forth line.. maybe we should do every second line?

8) How about one where you have to use something repeatedly.. like words that rhyme with Chuck (ok, probably bad example)

9)  top ten lists.. system for suggesting what the list should be, and system for entering suggestions for entries. A topic could be  "Phrases overheard at a Backstreet Boys concert", and then people would send in suggestions. The editor could delete the duplicates and off-topic entries, and people could vote on the remaining entries.. at the end of voting, the page would display the best voted entries

you're also free to suggest ideas you may have.. if something really tickles your fancy, let me know so I know which ones I should do.. if something looks really stupid to you, I want to know..

discuss please...

I favor 1-6 & 9 strongly. I don't quite understand 7 & 8.

my fault.. I copied these out of my notes, which I never intended to write for others to understand

umm... hmm.. I can't remember what 8 was supposed to be now myself... probably along the lines of replacing every noun with a single word or something, maybe not that extreme.. I have to try and remember this one now...

#7.. refers to taking a stanza from a song, and changing every fourth line..  there was a page I saw somewhere that had done this, but the url is no longer valid.. maybe someone could think of a better way to flesh out an example of this.. may be too tough for people to do..

I like all those ideas. 4,6,7, and 9 seem to be my favs, with 4 being on top.

Hmm... see if I can think of some other ideas....

Oh I know, definitely Anagrams for band names, e.g.:

Red Hot Chili Peppers = Hitler's Piped Porsche

There are tons of possible combinations for probably every band name. If you use it, post a link to the anagram sever...

I believe its http://www.wordsmith.com/anagram/index.html

Of those, #3 is the best. Anything that requires you to be *more* creative is good.

Categories which invite you to say "that sux because..." tends to elicit heaps of low-quality, poorly-thought-out entries (yes, I *did* submit many entries to the "Stupid Band Names" section myself, but I always tried to add a humourous comment). To that extent, #1, #4 and #6 are the poorest alternatives.

#9 is interesting... but topfive.com already does it very well (albeit without the specific musical or nostalgia focus of this site)

Ouch!  Or "Suicide Solution" for the Samaritans?  "F**k like a beast" for the Womens' Institute, or "Drink to me only" for AA

Sort of:
T'would take a lot of pluck
(and not a little luck)
To make a rhyme that doesn't suck
So let's not pass the buck
And end face-down in the muck
But in let's all get stuck
Try not to run amok
But jump upon that truck
Find words that rhyme with chucky
(That didn't rhyme, oh f...iddlesticks)

;-)

I don't think #1 would invite people to say something sux, #4 & #6 probably do though, and I have to agree.. those usually are the poorest quality entries I get to the site (hence the reason I try and steer clear of them)..

#9: hmm.. never seen topfive.. figures.. that idea I came up with myself, but it looks like that site has been doing it for years.. great minds think alike or something like that.. so I think I'll pass on doing that one..

I actually wanted to use anagrams for my trivia book I was starting to work on, but I found that even with anagram programs at my disposal, I still stunk at creating them... I could probably easily write a script that would verify the input to make sure the entries were really anagrams of each other, but do you think many people would come up with them?

I'm going to start a thread on the messageboard for each of the ones I think I would try to make into pages, #1,2,3.. if they get decent responses, I'll make them into real pages..

#4 & #6 I'll hold off on for now, I think #4, to be effective, would need people to list out several examples for each "cliche" and #6, is more a music history thing, which might not find an initial audience. It also doesn't fit with any of the established sections of the site.. I think I'd want something devoted to groups themselves, instead of song lyrics, which tends to be the focus of the site..

#8 and #9 I think are right out.. #9 has a whole site devoted to it, and #8, needs to be better thought out

#5, #7, I saw in action, and thought it looked good, but I'm not still not sure about.. I need to think it out more first before giving it a try

1, 4, 6 and 9 are my favorites.
I'm already thinking of one for #1:
10CC's "I'm Not in Love" for a dating service.  ;D That's lame. But yeah, those are my favorites.

Hey I thought of something. What about song titles where you just change one word that completely changes the meaning? It would work best for long song titles.

"I smoked it through the grape vine" for example.

Alternatively... changing more words but trying to make it sound like the original title as much as possible... (like "Soul Doubt" could be "Sold Out")
hmm... stuff like "I heard they have a grape kind"... anything that sounds almost just like the original.

How about "Unintelligible Lyrics"? You know what I mean:
The Flintstone theme: It's almost impossible to make out the line "Through the courtesy of Fred's big feet."  ::)

I got an idea for #6, how about Shaq moving to the hip hop career.  LOL!  now that was bad.  He was alright in the song "Whats Up Doc?" though.

Hey Chucky,

Here is my suggestion.  How about a page for "Most Cliche-ridden song" ?

My nomination would be that ANNOYING prefabricated song by Lone Star, called "Amazed".

That song is nothing but one huge drivel-based chain of cliches.  The only thing "Amazing" is that so many people were suckered into listening to it.

Not to mention that so many people bought it. What was I thinking?!

i think the changing one word thing could be very funny, i'm sure there's a few misheards taht are already like that, for example: linda ronstadt's "love is a rose" just change one letter, and you get, "love is a nose, but you'd better not pick it."   ;D

I have an idea for whatfreaks (even though I don't care much for the site.  I have to clear my internet history after visiting it, anyway..  ::) ).  You could bring back the gross lyrics that used to be on the "real  lyrics" section on amIright, since it fits nicely at that site.
