Subject: Crazy Don's parody-only lyrics quiz!
Here are five lyric lines from parody songs. What I want you to do is to name the parody and the song that's being spoofed, both by title and artist. As soon as a correct answer is given, it will be placed underneath each set of lyric lines, with the correct answerer's initials given. Ready? Here goes:
1. We took a little pizza and we took some sauerkraut
And we marched along together till we heard the Girl Scouts
Homer & Jethro--The Battle of Kookamonga (spoofs "The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton) (pb)
2. I felt so messy standing there
My daddy's shorts were everywhere
The Detergents--Leader of the Laundromat (spoofs "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las) (cb98 )
3. I was last in my class
Barely passed at the institute
Weird Al Yankovic--Like a Surgeon (spoofs "Like a Virgin" by Madonna) (lW15/x999)
4. 'Cause I get so ashamed
When I get this inflamed
Just tell 'em that I'm swelling, baby, please
Run C&W--Itchy Twitchy Spot (spoofs "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus) (I'm giving up on this one since it was such a toughie.)
5. Keep shells in my gun
Deer heads on my wall
Live out in the sticks and wear overalls
Cledus T. Judd--Plowboy (spoofs "Cowboy" by Kid Rock) (Jr for the artist of parody, title and song of original; no one actually got the title of the parody but a lot of you were close)
This quiz is now over. Thanks.

3 - Weird Al "Like A Virgin" - Madonna's Like a Virgin
5 - Think it maybe Shad-Rapp...that's all...

3 - Weird Al "Like A Virgin" - Madonna's Like a Virgin

It is Weird Al but the last word is not "virgin" but rhymes with "virgin."

You are way off…

I thought he got #3 before me, but I guess not.
-Weird Al's "Like a Surgeon"- from Madonna's "Like a Virgin."

Yes, the correct word was "surgeon," not "virgin."

That was a typo honest! - :-[

What an annoying set of lyrics ;-) I'm sure I've heard 4&5 before, but can't quite place them (number four is definitely a hard one ;-)); I'd have got Like a Surgeon, too - but wasn't quick enough.
Number one is (from web search) The Battle of Cucamonga (or Camp Kookamonga) which seems to fit the tune of "Cool for Cats" at least as far as the verse goes, but somehow I doubt it.
Stumped.

Well, you got the title of parody #1 correct; I need the artist and the song that's being spoofed. (The song is from 1959.)
#2 spoofs a "splatter-platter" of the 1960's; the song spoofed was covered by Twisted Sister in the 1980's.
#4 is quite a toughie; it's by a group that turns 1960's and 1970's R&B classics into bluegrass numbers and contains a former member of the Eagles. This is the only known parody by them.
#5 is by a guy that usually spoofs country songs; this is his best-known attempt at spoofing a rock song.

The Battle of New Orleans by Johnnie Horton, parody by Homer & Jethro (Henry D. Haynes and Kenneth C. Burns)
Oh, isn't Google wonderful?
Number 5 - are we talking David Allan Coe here?

You're right about #1. But you're way off base on #5. BTW, the artist of #5 is to country music as Weird Al Yankovic is to rock music…

Here's another clue on song #5. The song being spoofed was recorded by Pamela Anderson's current boyfriend.

You got the song spoofed right--now can you guess the title of the song that Cledus T. Judd parodized it with? It rhymes with "cowboy" and Americans spell it with seven letters while it takes the Brits nine letters to spell…

Subject: Re: Crazy Don's parody-only lyrics quiz!
Well, since you didn't actually give the title, I'm gonna give it to you anyway. The song's title is "Plowboy" (or "Ploughboy" for you Brits; doesn't rhyme with "doughboy," a nickname for a World War I soldier and the name of the Pillsbury mascot). So there.
Subject: Re: Crazy Don's parody-only lyrics quiz!
I'm going to go ahead and give you the answer to #4 as it is a toughie. The answer to #4 is "Itchy Twitchy Spot" by Run C&W (not to be confused with Run-DMC), a bluegrass group which has former Eagle Bernie Leadon in it. The group records what is known as "rhythm & bluegrass," which is taking R&B classics from the 1960's and 1970's and recording them as if they were covered by Bill Monroe (the late, great creator of bluegrass). The song that it spoofed was Billy Ray Cyrus's "Achy Breaky Heart." (Weird Al also spoofed the song as well.)
As for #2, I'm leaving it open.
Here are some clues for #2:
It spoofs a "splatter-platter" (a song that involves a death by accident) from 1964 by a girl group whose name is plural for a fictional place mentioned in James Hylton's book "Lost Horizon."
The song spoofed was covered by Twisted Sister in the 1980's.
The spoof also contains the line "Who's that bangin' on the piano? I don't know." On the song being spoofed, it is reported that Billy Joel bangs on the piano.
The spoof was recorded by a group whose name is plural for what Tide, Cheer, Fab, Rinso, etc. are.
The spoof takes place where there are coin-operated washers and dryers.
Oh yeah. The original song has to do with motorcycles.
And if these clues don't give it away, I'm going to have to give you this one too.

That's right. And now the quiz is over, although I had to give one of the answers myself and part of another. Thank you very much.
