Subject: Late 1980's Robbie Robertson songs

Written By: Tom Radigan on 05/10/02 at 10:49 p.m.

Robbie Robertson had a couple of solo songs on the radio in the late 1980's.  I don't have their titles or anything, so I can't look up their lyrics.  Can anyone plase help?  Thank you.

Hi Tom

Whilst I can't see any lyrics at the attached sites, they may be of some interest to you.

I remembrede I had a 45 by Robbie Robertson entitled "Showdown at Big Sky"

The links below mention that and may at least remind you of other songs you are looking for...

On this link, do a CTRL-F and search for 'showdown'.. You will then need to page up to the last section for the previous day (you will see what I mean when you get there).

The following lyrics appear there :

"Shoot straight! Shoot to kill. Don't blame each other just blame yourself. Shoot straight! From the hip. Gone forever in a trigger slip. Well, it could have been, could've been your brother. John Lennon, Dr. King, both murdered all for god damn nothing."

There was one that got a lot of airplay here in England. All I remember now (apart from the uniquely laid-back style of the song) is the line "I guess the wind just carried me here".

The other single Robertson had was "Somewhere Down the Crazy River". He sang that with Sammy BoDean.

Unfortunately, all of Robbie Robertson's commercial solo singles failed to crack the pop chart here in the U.S. However, he did land six hits on the AOR chart in the late '80s/early '90s, as follows...

Off his 1987 album, simply titled Robbie Robertson:
01) "Showdown at Big Sky"  (#2 AOR)
02) "Sweet Fire of Love"  (#7 AOR)
03) "American Roulette"  (#21 AOR)
04) "Somewhere Down the Crazy River"  (#24 AOR)

And off his 1991 album, Storyville:
05) "What About Now"  (#15 AOR)
06) "Go Back to Your Woods"  (#32 AOR)

The two biggies were "Showdown at Big Sky" and "Sweet Fire of Love", so those are most likely the ones you're thinking of...

Hope this helps...

Actually, the titles I'm thinking of (the songs I've heard on the radio) are "Showdown at Big Sky" and "Somewhere Down the Crazy River."  Thanks for the info, people!    ;D ;D
While on the subject, and having read about Robbie Robertson via the posted links (quite an interesting background!) I read recently about the fact that he had a very bitter falling-out with the other former members of The Band.  Does anybody have any info on this as well?
