Subject: Help ID lyrics from the 60s

Written By: Zella on 05/04/02 at 09:37 p.m.

This got lost when the board went down, so here goes again:

"Wadaya say when ya got the time?
"Wadaya say when ya got the time?
"Wadaya say when ya got the time?
"Wadaya say when ya think yer mine?

"You say Hey Baby
"You Say Hey Baby
"You say Hey Baby
"You say long long long long long."

Probably ca. 1965-67. The last words might be "love love love love love." I once had someone identify it as a Tommy James song called "Love Love Love Love Love" but I've never been able to locate a song by him by that name, so they may have been mistaken.

Hmmm, I've researched this for you a little bit, but need more info to go on. Based on the TJ reference, I'm assuming male vocals here? Could it possibly lean r&b? Group or solo artist? Did it get a lot of airplay, or was it probably only a "regional" hit? Any additional lyrics?

It appears the most likely title would be "Hey Baby", but the only song of that era w/ that title was the huge Bruce Channel hit from the Winter of '62, but I know that's not it. :( (The Buckinghams also had a big hit in the Fall of '67 w/ a song that had a modified version of that title, "Hey Baby " - but that doesn't sound like it, either.)

I don't show TJ and the Shondells ever recording a song called "Love, Love, Love", either, but they did record a song titled "Gone, Gone, Gone" (rhymes w/ "long, long, long"); it was the B-side of their smash hit, "I Think We're Alone Now", in the Spring of '67 (which fits your time-line). Just a shot in the dark... :)

Yes, male vocalist. It had a very "militant" sound. It always made me think of Tommy James (altho' when I knew the song way back when, I didn't know the names of any groups then--later when I thought about it it reminded me of the type sound on the chorus of Draggin the Line). I don't recall any of the other lyrics, but each verse did repeat in the same way. It got a ton of airplay in Akron where I grew up, but don't know if it was local or not.

No, I remember the Buckingham's song.

Yes, I tried that one. For one moment there I had this glimmer of hope, but that was not it.  >:( I have not heard the song now for easily 35 years or more, and it is driving me crazy. It is the only "mystery" in my life that I have been unable to solve on the internet.

I did find a song called "Love love love love love" by a group called Terry Knight and the Pack, but cannot find a track of it online to check it out :(

I have been searching for this song since the first time you posted it.  This is all I know, but it may be the song.  You mentioned Terry Knight & the Pack.  Well, TK was a local band from Michigan before transitioning into Grand Funk Railroad.  "Love, Love, Love, Love, Love" came in at #56 in a listener vote on a Michigan radio station in May of 1967 (originally recorded in 1966 for the B-side of "This Precious Time").  I could not find the lyrics anywhere to confirm that this is definitely the group, but there are several people selling the vinyl.  I don't know if this has helped at all...I may just be babbling.

Interesting you should mention this. While doing my research, I didn't uncover the Terry Knight and The Pack song myself, but um, would you believe I actually have an album of theirs that inlcudes that song?! "Love, Love, Love" appeared on the 1972 compilation of theirs titled Mark, Don & Terry 1966-67, which I happen to have on cassette. :) Unfortunately, it's packed away at the moment, but will try to dig it up if you can't find any other leads. As merry-beth stated, it's GFR-related, which is why I picked it up several years ago when I ran across it... :)
