Subject: Who sang 'Cross Talk' ??

Written By: Rick Deckard on 04/29/02 at 10:02 p.m.

This is making me crazy.  There was a 1-hit wonder in the early 80's and I THINK the name of the band was 'Cross Talk' and the single had the same name.  The only lyrics I can remember (vaguely at best) are:

Cross talk, break in from the silent zone,
Cross talk, someone knows that I'm alone, drivin' me insane...

If someone could put the finger on this band and single they would settle years of mental turmoil I've endured trying to figure out who this is (so I can track it down and buy it)!

Well the song that comes to mind is Talk Talk by Talk Talk. not a big hit here in the states #75 in 82.  Don't think it has the lyrics you remember though.

Based on all of my extensive references, from the '80s on back, there never was a band named "Cross Talk" (or "Crosstalk") - at least not one that was signed to a major label here in the U.S., anyway...

However, in the Spring of '83, here in the States the U.K. dance duo Q-Feel did release their song "Cross Talk" as a follow-up single to their minor hit, "Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop)". But "Cross Talk" was a flop, and failed to make the pop chart. It was off the group's 1983 album, simply titled Q-Feel. At that time, the album was issued on vinyl LP and cassette only. But then in the Summer of '89, something interesting happened: U.S. radio re-discovered the duo's original hit, "Dancing in Heaven", making it a minor hit all over again, even though the album had already been out-of-print for several years. So to ca$h in, the group's label decided to re-issue the album on cassette, and released it on CD for the first time. Unfortunately, the '89 re-issue is now long out-of-print as well...

Also, in 1980, the veteran U.K. rock group Pretty Things released an album titled "Cross Talk"...

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the replies.  I'm familiar with Talk Talk and certain it's not them.  I also came across Pretty Things in my searches and it's definitely not them either.

HOWEVER freak, I think you are really onto something with Q-Feel.  For the life of me I cannot find any lyrics posted for their song 'Cross Talk' but I do see 1 hit on it for download from Audiogalaxy and am trying madly to download it as I type.  If this is the song, I owe you BIG.

Well, I'll be dipped.  80smusicfreak, you are indeed a master of the genre and I salute you.  It is most definitely 'Cross Talk' by Q-Feel and you have ended the last big search I had left to complete the personal compilation of my 80's heritage.  I owe you one.

I must say this one took the cake in difficulty tracking down, followed by Touch 'Don't You Know What Love Is' and Eric Martin Band 'Sucker For A Pretty Face'.  Both those last 2 have since been re-released on CD but man, prior to that it was nearly impossible to track down copies of those on vinyl.

Anyway, thanks again and I'll be sure to remember this message board in the future, that's for sure!

No problem. :) As long as folks like you return to this board and at least acknowledge the responses posted, it makes it worth it. As much as I've attempted to help people here w/ their music q's over the last 2.5 years, I've found it can be a thankless job at times - and unfortunately, enthusiastic responses like yours seem to be the exception...

Anyway, believe it or not, I actually have the Q-Feel album on cassette - bought it back in '83 or '84, shortly after "Dancing in Heaven" was a minor hit. "DiH" ranks among the 100 best songs of the '80s, IMO ("Slow...slow...quick, quick...slow..."). I recently moved, so unfortunately, a good chunk of my music collection is still packed away in boxes at the moment. It would've taken me forever to find that cassette in order to play "Cross Talk" and compare it w/ the lyrics you provided in your original post, which is why I wasn't 100% certain the Q-Feel tune was the one you were looking for, lol. Although undeserved, considering it was such a flop, I'm rather surprised that "Cross Talk" got any airplay at all. But the Q-Feel album is a great one overall, and I highly recommend it, if you can find it. If not, I also suggest downloading "DiH" off the 'net while you're at it... :)

Incidentally, Martin Page was half of the Q-Feel duo. You may recall the huge solo hit that he later went on to have here in the U.S. in the Spring of '95, "In the House of Stone and Light"...

I like your taste in slightly more obscure '80s music - I, too, am currently searching for both the 1980 Touch album w/ their minor hit "Don't You Know What Love Is", and the Eric Martin Band's 1983 album, Sucker for a Pretty Face. I've seen 'em on vinyl, but I prefer cassettes, which are harder to find, as both are long out-of-print... :(
