Please send me the lyrics for the song "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" (Sorry, I don't know the artist.) Thank you.

It was originally done by Paper Lace, who also did "The Night Chicago Died," a ludicrous song that takes place on the non-existent east side of Chicago (actually, if there were an east side of Chicago, it would be in Lake Michigan).

True enough...but for those of us in the Great White North (and I was young and geography-challenged when TNCD came out) it was a GREAT song....I still remember having it on an 8-track and I knew the very spot on the other 3 tracks where I could change to track 1 and be right at the beginning of TNCD.....
"I heard my Mama cry...I heard her pray the night Chicago died..."

Jonman, TNCD is even more ludicrous than the "east side of Chicago" reference.
I mean, what exactly does Paper Lace mean when they say "And He kissed my mama's face... and threw mustard at her waist." ? ???
Never could figure that line out.

I can remember my brother buying the Paper Lace album (probably the only one!) that had Billy on it

The marchin' band came down along Main Street
The soldier blues fell in behind
I looked across and there I saw Billy
Waiting to go and join the line
And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say
Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life
Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife
And as he started to go she said, Billy, keep your head low
Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me
The soldier blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried, We've got to hang on, boys!
We've got to hold this piece of ground
I need a volunteer to ride up
And bring us back some extra men
And Billy's hand was up in a moment
Forgettin' all the words she said
She said
Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life
Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife
And as he started to go she said, Billy, keep your head low
Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me
I heard his fiancee got a letter
That told how Billy died that day
The letter said that he was a hero
She should be proud he died that way
I heard she threw that letter away ...
:D
