Subject: February 2025 monthly thread

I noticed that no one started the new thread for the new month yet, so here it is.

White Rabbits!

White Rabbit composing "White Rabbit". Painting by Grace Slick who actually composed the song.

^ Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Anyways, later this month, my home is gonna be tented for termites, so we’re gonna have to move out for a couple of days. This will be the first time in the 24-year history of our home that we’re doing this. (The operation is scheduled to begin on the 19th, so we have a couple of weeks to prepare.)

Whenever anyone says "White Rabbit" at the beginning of a month, I always hear Grace Slick in my head.

She says she wrote it on an old red piano that was missing some keys. It's somewhat influenced musically by Ravel's "Bolero".

That sounds inconvenient (but necessary).  Never experienced this.

So I've been doing all kinds of medical-related paperwork.  I just went on Medicare, changing from private insurance.  (My birthday is coming up.)  There's a dizzying amount of stuff to try and learn in a short time!  I think I figured it out, but we'll see.

Neither have I. But we found out last month that it needs to be done, so we looked around for different companies that could do it, comparing the costs and whatnot, and we decided on one particular company and scheduled a date for it. We also decided to hire a security guard to watch over the house after it gets fumigated (to protect it overnight).

I never realize it but there is a hint of Bolero to it.

I just found out that this fumigation operation is gonna be postponed to a later date (TBD, possibly in March) due to possible weather conditions; there is a threat of rain at around that time.

I have a dentist appointment tomorrow to finally get my new tooth. This was the appointment that was originally for the 10th of January, then the 30th, then the 6th of February and now tomorrow. Mother Nature is supposed to create havoc on us tomorrow so that appointment will probably be reschedule AGAIN! (This will be the first time that I initiated the change.)

Meanwhile, I still have a gaping hole in my mouth. Maybe I will get the new tooth sometime this year.

They pulled the tooth that was causing problems back in December. A few days after that, it felt better. The gum was still  a bit sore for a while but it is healing.

As for getting an earlier appointment, the problem has to do with transportation. It is a matter of when the dentist has an opening at the same time that a friend of mine is available.

After having a couple of productive days, it is now 1:30 and the only thing I have done so far today, is change my dentist appointment and listened to one ep of my podcast (History That Doesn't Suck). There were a few things I was hoping to get to, today. Don't know if I will. At least I have tomorrow to do them since I won't be going to the dentist.

It was very rainy in southern California today. I had to drive to and from work in the rain. Only going home it was more challenging to drive because the roads were slippery and (in some cases) flooded. In fact, we were dismissed a half-hour earlier than usual so that we could have ample time to get home. I’m just glad I got home safely (and in one piece!).

Today my family and I drove out to Corona to visit a family member whose wife was having a birthday celebration. The drive out there took 2 1/2 hours (due in part to heavy traffic on certain freeways). And on the way back home, we stopped for dinner.

I walked 3 blocks to get my hair done and I felt like I trekked through the tundra. The sidewalks were nothing but ice. They were "plowed" yesterday but left the ice and it was pretty much an obstacle course. Where the sidewalk met the road, there were puddles and it felt like crossing rivers. Then there was the wind. Yeah, I was walking into the 26 mph gusts in 17° temperature. I tried to keep my hood on but it kept getting blown off. I had my sunglasses on but the wind still made my eyes water. Those 3 blocks felt like 3 miles.

When I got there, I requested to get a ride home from my friend/hair stylist. She obliged.

She is my friend. If you read any of my posts in the positivity thread where I talk about my two amazing friends, she is one of the two.

After she dropped me off, my other amazing friend picked me up to take me shopping like she does every week.

I just hope they both realize how much I appreciate them and how much I love them.

That’s very nice. I have made friends with one or two of my regular hair stylists over the years, but in the last 10 years I haven’t had a “regular” one.

I accidentally had a brief hiatus from the boards. I thought I ought to update my email address in advance of any new boards being set up in case the database of existing members could be used somehow. However it took some time to revalidate my account.

I have been off work last week. Elizabeth came to stay for a few days. We went to Zumba together on Monday. On Tuesday afternoon we went to a local country park. Jean sat in the cafe with a coffee and her book, while Elizabeth and I went for a walk. Then we all had drinks and cakes. On Wednesday morning we went orienteering in the streets of a nearby town. We also spent time working on some job applications for her.

On Thursday we drove down to Milton Keynes to meet James for lunch. We went to a nice Indian dosa place. Elizabeth then went home and James came back here with me.

We all went out for lunch today before James headed home.

The phone rang. I don't pick it up until I hear the caller ID.This time the Caller ID said "Senator Sanders." Yup, the Senator was calling me. I must be a very important person for Bernie to call me.

It wasn't really Bernie-just a recording inviting me to a town hall.

That is one of the nice things about living in a small state. I have met Bernie many times. One time just totally floored me. When Bernie was first running for the Senate, we went to see the Capital Steps which was a birthday party for our retiring senator Jim Jeffords. During intermission, Carlos & I were outside. We were both wearing Bernie shirts. Bernie came outside, saw us and came over. What floored me was what he said when he came up to us, "How are you doing, Charlie?" What? Bernie knew him By  Name!!! Bernie remembered him for when he first ran for the House and Carlos had a fundraiser at the house & Bernie attended.

So tired. This week has been super busy again at work.

A colleague was in and out for a couple of days because her mum was very ill in hospital. Thankfully she has turned a corner, and the situation isn’t quite so dire. Another colleague is in hospital after having their appendix removed and a hernia repaired. A bit less impact on us.

We also had some more students join us from a nearby school which is rumoured to be closing in July.

I was planning to go to the pub after work, but then we realised we hadn’t finished all the clearing up. Rushing around doing that made me late for the pub meet, and more tired.

Helping at the British Universities orienteering championships tomorrow and then Bronze Duke of Edinburgh practice hike on Sunday
