Subject: Awesome August 2023 monthly thread

So we now wave goodbye to July and hello to August.

White rabbits!

Let’s have a good month!

Well, this month looks to be a better month than July. I will be getting my vacation check from work it will be in my bank account this week since I was supposed to take it towards the end of August but then my injury happened and so I asked if they can put it in and they said yes, I will also be getting money from my disability and I am also looking forward getting back to work after a few weeks away. :)

Today is my last visit with the foot doctor before he can discharge me to go back to work, I also got my vacation check and very soon I should be getting my disability check so August is looking pretty good so far.  :)

Well, close to the end of the month I'm seeing the orthopedic surgeon to see if I can have my hip replacement surgery done.  I'm getting more and more nervous as time gets closer and closer.  I've already lost 18.5 lbs so far.  And the physiotherapist says that I'm healthy enough.

So today at my office, our air conditioner broke down around the middle of the day. My boss contacted an air conditioning repair company, and they came over to take a look at the problem. They determined the root of the problem, and they're gonna have to get a new part. Meanwhile, it got very hot in our office suite, that by 3pm, my boss decided to let us go home early. She couldn't deal with the lack of air conditioning either. So I got home a little earlier than usual (after stopping to fill up the gas tank).

And today at the office, the air conditioner is still not yet fixed. However, my boss brought in three electric fans - one for her office, one for my office, and one for the other coworker's office. That seemed to work out fairly well. But the air conditioning people still have yet to get the part needed to replace the part that is broken. And we don't know how long that'll take yet. Hopefully we can keep the fans working without too much trouble.

Ick  :P  Electric fans do help, but aren't the same as A/C.  Those fans will probably keep operating for a long time - whether they're actually working is another matter...

These electric fans that my boss brought in were actually new. So they work like a charm, the way they're supposed to. You're right; it's not the same as having an A/C at all.

On a related note, when my family & I moved into our brand new house in 2001, it didn't have A/C. We didn't even get one at first because the climate was cooler compared to what we'd dealt with in the San Fernando Valley (which includes very hot summers). Our house is located less than ten miles from the coastline (as the crow flies). If it ever got warm, we would use our electric fans. However, after a brutal heat wave in 2004 during the Labor Day weekend, we became convinced that we needed to invest in A/C...and it has made a major difference.

Update... we still don't know when our A/C at the office is gonna get fixed. So we continued to use the electric fans. Still warm (and not to mention, muggy today). Before the work day ended, my boss contacted the air conditioning company back to see if they had a ballpark idea of when they might have the part that is needed to repair the unit.

I had my surgery last week and came out of hospital the same day. Since then I have made a good recovery from the actual surgery - just everything else health wise has been a bit pants. I had a UTI start at the weekend, woke up one night with severe back cramps, enough to send me to the urgent care centre. Thankfully not affecting my kidneys as I feared. However the antibiotics gave me a bad stomach upset  ::) In addition my ears are still blocked after the flight home, and I have an annoying tickly cough. And now I have a bug bite on my arm

Yesterday, got a text from my step-son. He wanted to know about coming for visit with the kids. So, the 4 of us went out to dinner.  :)

Today, he forwarded an email he got from one of Carlos' students who said how much Carlos influenced him. This is a quote: He was adored by those who loved learning and feared by those who didn’t. I mean, that is the highest form of a compliment.

He did touch many lives and was so loved and admired.

Wow! I'm doing Tylenol for pain relief for the moment because the pills I was taking well, let me just say that they went in one end and out the other, and that's just me being as polite as I can be without being, you know, graphic.  ::) And I hate being graphic when I don't have a reason for being that way.

James left at lunchtime to go on holiday to Rome with his girlfriend Emily.

This afternoon Dai and I walked to the town centre for the Mela - an Asian cultural celebration. There was a stage with various dance groups and musicians performing (Bollywood style, Bhangra, etc) and stalls with clothing, jewellery and crafts for sale. Plus you could get henna painting on your hand.

Went to church this morning for an 11am service (saw one person I knew; talked with other people there that I had not previously met, which is one way to get acquainted with them), then to the grocery store to do food shopping... then came home. Had an early dinner, then did some backyard work, and then went into the pool for a little over half an hour.

For I don't know how long (years I think) our son-in-law has a friend or colleague who was on a mission. He was looking for the boat that Carlos' dad was on during the D-Day invasion. At first we were told the records were destroyed in a fire. Then we were told that it wasn't the Coast Guard records that were destroyed. Carlos wanted to go down to the Archives in D.C. to see if he could find anything.

When Carlos was in the hospital, he said that he wanted to be around when we got the info. Well, we got the info today. They found the boat.

It really is bittersweet. Something that we have been waiting for for a long time and he isn't here to rejoice in it.

Anyways... southern California is under a storm watch (with a state of emergency) as a hurricane that developed off the Pacific coast of Mexico made its way northward; it has since weakened to a tropical storm. Of course, hurricanes are rare for the West coast of the United States. Still, everyone in the storm's projected path has been advised to take safety precautions. I haven't even gone out anywhere today (I've had no place to go anyways).

So we have had some rain this afternoon... but also, there was an earthquake an hour ago! :o A five-pointer, centered near Ojai (which is less than 20 miles away from me, as the crow flies). Plus we felt an aftershock since then.

I must also add that I have heard that this storm has affected some roadways in Southern California, so I’m not sure if that includes any roads I travel on to go to work. I will find that out in the morning.

In 6 months from now I can have my hp replacement surgery done.  And I'm really excited because by next summer I should be okay and doing my physiotherapy.  I'm really excited.

So, this afternoon I went to the courthouse for my jury service. (My "group number" was among the ones to report in the afternoon rather than in the morning.) And there isn't much to write home about, except that we all got dismissed earlier than expected (as noted in the Jury Duty thread in TTT). So I'm done with that for at least a year. Tomorrow I can go back to work!

Another new person started at my work last week; he will be taking on Admin Assistant duties. He is getting acclimated to the company, and when I go back to the office tomorrow, I will be training him to do some of the tasks that I’d been doing for the past two years.

Scarecrow festival today in a town a little drive away. They were all on the theme of animation. There was a great Top Cat one. We didn’t get round all of them as parking was at one end of the town resulting in a long (for my mother in law) walk before we saw any of the displays.

Tomorrow is my appointment with my surgeon o find out how my surgery went and what the next steps of treatment will be.

Starting tomorrow I'll be mostly off the boards, for almost two weeks.  I'll be on vacation!  :)
