Busy at work yesterday getting ready for our Open Morning this morning. We set out two laboratories with various experiments to demonstrate some of the practical work students can expect to do in the different subjects and school years.
This morning I went to Parkrun first. A 5km loop around some paths. Then home for some tea and toast and a quick shower before going into work for my shift helping in the science labs. I spoke to quite a few families about the benefits of single sex education.
This afternoon Dai is taking James back to university for his second year. I think he has remembered everything, although he nearly forgot to take a coat ::)
Tomorrow there is a community event in town with people coming together to demonstrate and teach whatever their interests are - so flower arranging, art skills, card making etc. I am going to be there with the other Morris dancers. We will do a demonstration and then teach a simple dance to whoever fancies having a go.

Tomorrow morning I have a doctor appointment, which means I'll be getting into work a little late. (That's ok, because I told my boss about it last week.) Hopefully I can find out information about getting a flu shot; where I can go for one. And maybe ask about a booster vaccination.

Might go get my flu shot tomorrow. We can walk in during the week, but have to make an appointment for Sunday. I'd rather just walk in so, tomorrow is fine. I hope everyone gets theirs.

I think I need to wait another week or so before I can get my booster.
Today was Space Day at school, as part of National Space Week. We started with a whole school talk from Maggie Aderin-Pocock. Then years 7, 8 and 9 spent the rest of the day researching and then doing their own space thing. There was building a Mars base, building and launching air and water pressure rockets, presenting research on an area of cosmology or doing a piece of art (picture, sculpture, movie snippet) with a space theme.
The rockets were launched in the school quad (I got quite wet doing this bit). After clearing the mess in the quad and some of the labs I then moved several of the creations over to the main school building for the evenings display, talk and quiz.
Off to bed now as there is still loads of mess to clear in work tomorrow

I also have to go in for a blood test, but that'll have to wait until the weekend. I was also told that I'll have to fast for 12 hours prior to the examination. (And I didn't do that this morning.) The doctor even referred me to a place where I can go in. I was also told that I didn't have to make an appointment, they accept walk-ins.

It was beautiful out today. One of our trees is already changing to its Autumn colors! But it's only that one tree. I Will take some nature pics soon for those of you who don't live in the north east states...Autumn is gorgeous here.
It is chilly out so I made a special soup dish just for today. Spent the day shopping and cooking the soup which actually took about 2 hours to make. But it was perfect!

A couple years ago, back in Fall 2019, I was gonna go with my family to the East Coast for a trip but we canceled it in favor of a Mexican cruise. Still, I hope to get to the East Coast someday.

Well, I'm waiting for all of the trees to start changing their foliage colors. One of my neighbors has an assortment of very large pumpkins. I think he uses a special growth formulation on them. My mother says its steroids but...lol, I dont think it is. The pumpkins are huge. Bigger than the largest papasan chair! He's allowed me to take photos of them if I want to. So nice of him!

There is a seasonal tree in our backyard - a liquidambar - and at the start of fall it starts turning colors, and the leafs start falling off the tree. I have been taking pictures of it with my digital camera every year since 2008. I'm going to share a picture of it when I have a chance.

Ooh! :o Sorry to hear about the pain. But I'm glad it's over with.
I have to go get a blood test done tomorrow morning (as a followup to my doctor appointment from Wednesday; I was told that I needed to get it done). I'm probably gonna have to wait, since it's at a place that does walk-ins. So I can't eat anything tomorrow morning because fasting for 12 hours is required prior to the blood test. So I have officially begun my fasting.

Had a dentist appointment today-first one in TWO YEARS!!! (Not my fault!) This will make it the 6th dentist I have seen in the last 20 years. Two have retired and their replacements left town. One we didn't like so we found another one. I certainly hope that this dentist sticks around for a while. I am so tired of having to shop for a new one and break in a new hygienist.

I have heard that you would need a certain plant growth formula to grow really big pumpkins. My neighbor has 3 large, over grown pumpkins in his garden. I don't know how they do it, but I know it requires something a little special.

Similarly, I'm gonna need to get a new dentist because I'm on a new health insurance (it has been this way since I became full time earlier this year). And I'm gonna need to figure out who that will be before the end of the year. Because I saw my last dentist this past June for a routine exam.

I usually go every 6 months but because of Covid, that didn't happen and then my dentist office closed and I had to find a new dentist and when I did, 6 months was the soonest they could get me in. Like I said, it was NOT my fault for not going in two years. But now I am back on the 6 month schedule and I already have an appointment for next May.

I, too, normally have 6-month intervals between dental appointments. And I had to put off mine because of Covid as well. After my October 2019 appointment I made an appointment for the following April, but then Covid hit so I had to reschedule it, but that was put on hold...until my dentist finally called me half a year after that (which is now almost 1 year ago)...and he agreed to see me in November, for a routine appointment. That's when he found a little cavity, which he filled in January. Then he saw me for a routine appointment in June. When it was over, we did not schedule a follow-up appointment, but that's kinda moot because as I mentioned in my previous post, I have a new health insurance, so I'm gonna need to find me a new dentist, hopefully before the end of this year.

It is raining leaves. I am always afraid when it does this, Josette is going to go crashing through the kitchen window as she is trying to go after the leaves. EVERY year, I hear her banging against the window.

Josette's Theme
Not as well known as Quentin's Theme, but Barnabas used to hear it in the music box.

I LOVE Josette's Theme (as well as Quentin's Theme). I am always whistling it to my Josette. My sister used to have the Josette's music box.
BTW, where do you think we got the name Josette from anyway? ;)

I like the recorder. Here's some trivia. I'm not sure how widely known it is outside fans, but Grace Slick plays the recorder and played it on two of Jefferson Airplane's best songs "Martha" and "Comin' Back To Me".

I can't say that I "play" but I can make sounds that people may recognize (like Ode to Joy). When I was in high school, I took an AP music theory class (THE hardest class I EVER took). We were learning to conduct. For those of us who didn't play an instrument, we were handed recorders. So, I was playing a Hayden piece in our little orchestra. (I was much better conducting than I was playing. lol) Side note, the worst part of that class was having to sight sing-which I blew down my leg. I could NEVER do that.
The recorder is just one of my many instruments that I try to teach myself. The penny whistle, the flute, fife, harmonica, Woodstock chimes (I inherited from my Dad) and the piano are some of the others. I don't have a keyboard at the moment but one of these days, I will probably be getting another one.

When I was in first and second grade we had a music class to learn the "flute-a-phone" a cheap, plastic instrument (a toy, really) that I think was supposed to somewhat approximate a recorder.

Cat, best of luck playing the last few bars of Josette’s theme. I don’t think it will sound quite right if you pick one note to play. I wonder if playing bar 17 as a D then an F would sound closer?

Dai and I are up in Durham this weekend, visiting Elizabeth.
Yesterday we did some work in her garden, pulling weeds and Dai did a couple of minor repairs in her room. Plus we took her food shopping and out for dinner.
Today we went out for lunch and then for a tour of the castle great hall and chapels. You can’t actually go into the castle keep as it is used for student accommodation. The tour felt somewhat rushed. I would have preferred more wandering around time in each room and less listening to the tour guides garbled account of the history of the place.
Afterwards we went around part of the cathedral. A service had just started so you couldn’t go into the main area. A disadvantage of cathedral tours on a Sunday!
Tomorrow we are driving across to the Lake District to the other house. We will spend a few days there.

It's about music, it's right up your alley. Check out the sheet music to "Quentin's Theme" and "Josette's Music Box" I posted. It might give you some ideas for composition. They are elegant pieces.

I thought the music to Josette's theme looked a little iffy. That used to be common in old sheet music. I have some music books of some of my favorite albums and the music is way off. Sometimes they don't even get the lyrics right. I don't know who they were hiring to do the transcription. They're great collector's items though.

When I bought my recorder (from Amazon), I could buy a cheapo plastic one for about $10 or a good wooden one for about $25. It was a no-brainer.

Thanks for the heads up. My music reading skills are not the best and sometimes I rely on my ear a lot. Don't know if that is good or not. :-\\ But, I do like to have the music to at least guide me in what I like to think is the right direction.

Half term, and we get two weeks off. We need it, it has been a very busy term so far.
Yesterday we spent some time in Barnard Castle. A nice little town, with plenty of independent shops and an opticians.
Today was mainly spent round the house. Dai is painting the kitchen, I was just doing housework like changing sheets, and vacuuming. Boring but necessary.
We did drive across to Ambleside to look round the outdoor shops. I bought a pair of walking boots, as mine are old and starting to leak
Tomorrow we are taking up the old carpet in the lounge ready for the carpet fitters who are coming in a couple of weeks.

Went out to dinner last night as a late anniversary dinner since most restaurants around here are closed on Mondays. The restaurant we were planning on going to is closed indefinitely and they are not too sure when they are going to reopen (IF they are going to reopen). After going around and around about the local restaurants (the ones I was kind of thinking of were also closed on Tuesdays. OY VEY!) So, we ended up at Applebees. The food is good but WAY high in sodium. Carlos' blood sugar was elevated today. (His numbers are usually low so when they are elevated, I am not too concerned-because his elevated numbers are not TOO high.)
The smoke detectors went off again this morning-TWICE! The poor cats. They were totally freaking out. At least it didn't happen in the middle of the night. We called the electrician. He told us how to reset them. He also told us that the will have to be replaced-but just not yet.

Faulty wiring is my guess. The electrician returned our call today (Yup-on a Sunday) and told us how to disconnect it if they go off again. In the meanwhile, he will come by sometime soon to take a count as to how many we have and order them to be replaced.

Well, come to think of it, the ones in our house are battery powered, and they will start making chirp noises when it's time to replace the batteries. (Usually after 2 to 3 years.) I have been keeping a log of when we've replaced the batteries in each one, so I can kindof anticipate when to replace whichever one is next.

The rule of thumb is that you are supposed to change the batteries when you change the clocks (which is twice a year). We change the batteries once a year.
Oh and it IS THE LAW that they WILL start chirping in the middle of the night!
These, however are NOT chirping but GOING OFF-but at least it is not in the middle of the night-well, not lately. They have done that in the past. Talk about a rude awakening.

'Twas cold and rainy in southern California today as well! I had to drive to work in the rain, but it wasn't too bad; when I drove home later on, the rain was done passing through and the sun came out. Plus there was no heavy traffic to deal with.

Crazy day today. Brought the camper van in for inspection-the appointment was at 10. The guy was running a bit late but finally got us in about 10:30 or so. He said it would be about an hour or so. Ok. We had planned to go to a store that we like to go to that was next door. So, we grabbed our shopping bags and headed for the store. We took our time. Unfortunately, we bought a lot of heavy bags of litter that we couldn't carry. We asked the woman if we could borrow the cart. She said as long as we returned it. So, we wheeled our purchases and left the cart outside of the garage. They STILL weren't done with the van. We waited about another half hour (they were STILL working on it). The oil was changed. The guy said that they had to evict a mouse family from an air filter. OH! We needed a new windshield wiper and (the kicker) FOUR NEW TIRES!!!! OUCH! He also did a little bit of body work that we wanted to have done. It was really hard to empty the tanks and (poor) Carlos had to pretty much get on his back on the ground to get to the tank. So, the guy just cut a fiberglass fender to get access to the tank. It should be much easier now.
So, when he was done, we went to a tire place that was on the other side of town. Since we didn't have an appointment, we were told that they will fit us in when they can because this is their busy time of year as everyone is getting their snow tires put on.
We walked to a little bar that was next door. The bartender said that she will fire up the grill (since it was just about 1). We had to wait for the grill to be ready to get our lunch. We said that we weren't in a hurry because the guy at the tire place was saying that it could be about 2 hours.
After we ate, we walked back to the tire place expecting to sit for a while but we didn't even get inside and they were bringing the van around. Talk about good timing. So back across town to the inspection place we went. But they guy had to run out and said that he would be back in about 20 minutes. OY VEY! So, we waited. And then the van was FINALLY inspected and we left there about 3 or so. (Yeah, we had a 10:00 appointment.)
Then we had to go BACK across town to get my SIL's prescription that she asked us to get since we were going into town.
Then we FINALLY came home and the van has fresh oil, a new windshield wiper, easier access to the tanks, and new tires. And it rained on us all day. She is good to go but she still needs to be winterized but that will be for another day.

I can’t find the thread where we were discussing tinnitus and other things. I mentioned on there that I get spells of vertigo at night, usually when rolling over in my sleep and sometimes upon sitting up in the morning.
I had a bad spell over the weekend, where I fell over while walking to the bathroom. Thankfully I fell onto the bed, so no harm done.
Anyway I finally spoke to a doctor about this. He said that I am displaying classic signs and symptoms of Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Basically there is some debris in my semi-circular canals which has caused them to be sensitive to position changes when I am lying down. I have to do some weird head twisting to reposition the bits in my ears to where they won’t cause any problems (called canalith repositioning)

I am sorry and TOTALLY understand. Been there, done that. I hadn't fallen over but felt like I was going to. My mother had Meniere's disease. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/menieres-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20374910
I thought that I may have inherited that but I do not have the loss of hearing. (I was once told that I could hear a gnat in a hurricane by a hearing doc.) When I was on the phone with the doc, he asked me if I had ringing in my ears. I told him that I have tinnitus. He said, "Yeah, you have ringing in your ears." He prescribed two meds-one for the dizziness and one for the nausea that accompanied the dizziness. They helped. I still don't know what causes these episodes but I now keep the meds on hand for when it acts up. It is possible that it could have just been an issue of getting water in my ears when I washed my hair.

I left the house earlier than usual, thinking I could get to the office a little early (if not on time)...but there was an accident that backed up traffic for a mile-and-a-half, and cost me about 11 minutes...so I was late by 10 minutes. Still, I was able to get my work done. (This included a complicated task that I was trying my hand at for the first time.)

Just got back from a mad volunteering session at the local vaccination centre. We were a few marshalls short of the ideal number so I ended up doing two roles for most of the afternoon. It’s hard work standing up for five hours or so.

Today going into work, the traffic was much better. I got to the office on time.

These exercises are not fun. Hopefully the fact the the room spins when I do them is a sign that they are working. Ten minutes twice a day is ok when I am not in work. I haven’t worked out when I am going to do them next week.
Elizabeth is coming home briefly overnight, then we are all going to Cambridge tomorrow to see James. There is the Cambridge City Orienteering Race tomorrow so we are all doing that (including Elizabeth’s boyfriend), and then we are going for lunch.

Carlos went out to move the van and it wouldn't start! :o :o It was really weird because we JUST used it a few days ago and everything was working fine. He tried it a few times and it started (I didn't ask him what he did). He turned it around (and did it the hard way and ran over our parley plant. :\'( :\'( ) As I was watching him to this, I noticed that one of the tires looked very soft-one of the BRAND SPANKIN' NEW tires. He called the place and the guy said to change the tire and bring it in but Carlos said that he is 75 years old and that is above his pay grade. The guy said that he would stop by after to work to get the tire and see what is wrong with.
Well Jane, it just goes to show ya, it is ALWAYS SUMTHIN'!

Nice! Hopefully you didn't get too chilly!
As for the weather where I am, it got warm again. It was raining on Monday, but over the rest of the week, it gradually became warmer again. Yesterday it got hot, and today was not quite as warm. Should be cooler again this weekend.

I know that Halloween is tomorrow but I feel like I am already going into panic mode WAY too early this year. I usually start going into panic mode toward the end of November. I have to get 8 Christmas gifts and 2 birthday gifts. I put out the word asking what they would like. Some of the lists doesn't help me much but I do have some idea as to what to get but I am still not sure. Once they get older, they are all going to get paper. I supposed I could get the older ones paper (I have gotten them gift cards in the past but it always seem so impersonal). I also need to get my Christmas cards, too.

Since I love to haunt thrift shops, during the course of the year I frequently come across full boxes of great looking Christmas cards for about 99 cents a box. I scoop these up, and when Christmas comes I am ready. This happens with Christmas decorations too.

The band America. It was great! :D They played in Joliet last night. (I've seen them in concert a number of times, but it had been probably 10 years since I'd last seen them)

I saw them on a bill with Stephen Stills in 1986. They even sang a couple of songs together, including Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". :-*
