Subject: What was the first popular song you learned by heart?

Written By: Redhairkid on 11/19/15 at 9:16 am

I'm talking popular music here as opposed to traditional songs such as 'Happy Birthday To You' or the songs of your national culture.

Mine was 'Groovy Kind Of Love' by the Mindbenders.

I've been listening to music since I was born! The first song I remember listening to was "Magic" by Olivia-Newton John. I learned many songs mainly from the 80s when my mother watched MTV and VH1. I learned a lot of the songs/videos they played at the time.

I don't recall but I THINK it was Hello Dolly. Does that count as a popular song? I was told (which I don't remember) as a toddler, standing in front of the record player saying "Dolly. Dolly. Dolly" so someone would put it on for me. Because of this, my nickname became Dolly.

Yes, it does, Cat. A hit for both Louis Armstrong and Frankie Vaughan.

The album that I wanted to be played was from the Broadway show with Carol Channing.

The first one I can remember actively learning and trying to work out words to was Sunday Girl by Blondie.

I know that I was singing along with the chorus of other chart songs earlier than that.  Crazy Horses - The Osmonds and Puppy Love by Donny spring to mind

I think the songs from The Sound of Music were my first memories of singing popular music. They were played as singles on the radio. My older sisters also had the sheet music for their piano lessons. after that... I can recall knowing most of Neil Diamonds Shilo album by heart.

Fruit gum 1910 also had some songs I knew by heart ... Yummy, Yummy, Yummy and Indian Giver were songs I knew by heart in the late sixties. I recall my older siblings playing many great songs that I learned. Like ... Down Town by Petula Clark, Young Girl by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap... The Beatles Rubber Soul album ...  And so many more.

There were many 'novelty' songs back then and Nancy Sinatra's ... These Boots Are Made For Walking was an early one I knew off by heart.

My mother would play Bobby Goldsboro while she cleaned so I knew the Lyrics to Honey and
See The Funny Little Clown at an early age but the song I remember most, actually trying to
learn the lyrics to was.....

Billy Don't be A Hero....Paper Lace.

Can't Touch This--MC Hammer. I was 4. And I remember trying to do the breakdown dance in the video. Never could.

I'm not sure, but it was most likely a Beatles song.

The first time was a great time
second time was a blast
the third time I fell in love
now I hope it lasts.

I can see it in your walk
tell it when you talk
see it in everything you do
even in your thought

What can I say? I was 13.  The kids were popular and I had a crush on Joe.  LOL! ;D
