Spent some time yesterday planning our next road trip-this time New Hampshire. We will be leaving on Tuesday afternoon (after we pick up our C.S.A. share) and then head out. Wednesday we will be hiking in Franconia Notch State Park (where Old Man In The Mountain used to be). On Thursday, we will drive the Kancamagus Highway (scenic drive). On Friday, we will go to Ruggles Mine to search for treasure (literally) and on Saturday, we will go and visit with my aunt & uncle and then come home on Monday.

I tried asking him in the past that one day in the future if he would like to come and see me since he hasn't been in New York since the time he had to move to Schenectady 13 years ago, I told him that I would pay for half your carfare since I'm a good friend and I've known him for 19 years, We could walk around his old neighborhood like we used to back in the late 90's and do some reminiscing.

Baltimoreian,
Please, please check your avatar & sig line. My anti-virus keeps going off. It is not a reflection of WHAT you have up there-just where you are getting it from. I think it could be from something that you have in your sig line probably from a site that has a lot of malware.
Like I said, I'm sure it is not your fault just something from a site that you are getting your pics from.
Am I the only one this is happening to or is anyone else's anti-virus going off?

No offense taken my friend :). Here's my take on the age thing. Society defines seniors as more or less 62. OK by me. But elderly, to me, implies physically fragile and / or mentally in decline. I'm not touchy about my age since 60 is the new 40, and I don't look of feel my age. But my grand kids do tell me I'm old. Go figure. And don't worry about offending. When you do you wll know. Keep smiling

No I'm not offended at all. I'm 39 next month and I actually look younger than I really am. I had two hair dressers ask me how old I was. I said "I'm 38" and they both had me pegged at in my 20s. ;D

I kinda look young for my age too. I turned 35 last month, but someone meeting me for the first time might not be able to tell that. In fact, I have probably looked young for my age ever since I entered my double-digit years.

Last week, I allowed them to delay my vacation by a week(a service clerk left for a new job and we had to hire someone else).
This delay turned out to be a blessing, we have a Monopoly game going on(which both customers and associates get to play). I won one of the $1,000 dollar cash prizes! Not the highest on the associate board($30,000), but still pretty good.

I went to see a show put on by Dancing with the Stars siblings Derek & Julianne Hough... I don't watch DWTS regularly but if seen enough to know who they are. The meet & greet was cool got to talk to them about lip
Sync battle
Also Paula Abdul, Kenny Ortega (choreographer for dirty dancing) and Nina dobrev (vampire diaries & more importantly Degrassi) were there. Got pics with them so it was a pretty good night for me. The show was good
Too.
Oh went to dinner with my friends at one of Wolfgang pucks restaurants. Well I watched my friends have dinner. It was more than I could afford to pay since gas and parking was so much. Anyway we got shytty service and my friends didn't seem to care. I did care and complained. I have been offered a free meal next time I go back. That was not the reason I complained but I'll take it. I hear the food was excellent. - puck didn't cook it. He doesn't cook at that restaurant. I have been to his higher end establishments a couple of times and one time he was at Spago when I was eating there. That was cool.....

I love his choreography....his directing? not so much!
ETA: He directed an ep of Bunheads... that was a great show and I don't recall having issue with it.... but I'll watch it again to be sure.
Also I just saw he's remaking Dirty Dancing... and will serve as the director. It will be interesting to see if Derek and/or Julianne are in it..

The Old Man in the Mountain has gone now?
Yup. It collapsed in 2003 which is very sad. It is pretty much the icon of the state-all the state highways have it's feature on it:
https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSToHa7TddpmTk_4SnL6muHOafHsVnQEAFmbGUjjhe7SgRN7S7RjQ
Here is their state quarter:
http://coins.thefuntimesguide.com/files/2000-new-hampshire-state-quarter.png
I found out that it had been falling down for years. There was one family who "repaired" it every year. In fact, when the guy who began the repairs died, his son (who continued to repair it), put his father's ashes in the eye. When it collapsed, his father was buried with the "Old Man." If this family didn't do what they did all these years, it would have fallen much sooner.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Man_of_the_Mountain
What they have now are poles that if you line up your eye/camera, you can see what it would have looked like.

Elizabeth is back from Australia!
She had a really great time. Not too much sight-seeing as she was at school for most of the time. She took part in a school production and school sports. And last night talked non-stop about it all, then complained we hadn't asked her any specific questions!
One downside - her luggage wasn't put on the plane in Melbourne for some reason. Hopefully it was put on the flight due to arrive this afternoon.

Anyway... on Wednesday night my laptop started draining its battery rapidly, despite being plugged in. So yesterday, I tried to solve the problem. First I called a hotline for help and told the person there of the problem; that person gave me some advice, which I tried to follow. Then I called the Best Buy service hotline and explained the problem; they said I could bring it to a store and have a techie look at it... which I did. (There's a Best Buy close to my home, so I could conveniently take it there.) The techie figured out that the battery's voltage had dropped, which is why it wasn't charging past a certain point. He said I could run the laptop without the battery, which means I would need to plug it into an outlet in order to use it, better yet into a power strip (surge protector). So I am doing that.

Way cool.
I once took a video course on writing. It was really good because it taught me how to write for different aspects, like writing a letter to the editor or the to City Hall, or if you are inquiring about something. I really learned a lot from that video course. The other video course I took I pretty much failed (well, I withdrew before the end of the semester because I knew I was failing). It was a math course. I think it might have had something to do with whenever I put the video in, I would fall asleep. I would say that had something to do with it, wouldn't you? :D ;D ;D ;D

I remember doing that too. In some cases I sat in the class for the first day or two and hoped to add; most such attempts have been successful.

I need to stop overusing my laptop, it's going to explode one day! :-[
If it doesn't crash first...
On a similar note, from mid 2007 until late 2009, we were primarily using my dad's laptop (which he'd had since late 2003), but it was being overused so much during that period that we feared it was going to quit running altogether. Then my mom got one for herself that year, and I was given one later in the year, and have been using it ever since. But my dad's machine was beginning to get slower, due to frequent everyday use, that he eventually invested in a new one and stopped using his old one to go online. (He can still use the old one, but only for certain simple offline tasks, such as typing things in MS Word and editing pictures.)

At least you have a Bachelor's, unlike me. :-X
I have one too, although it's not been much of a key for getting a job. But some employers are glad when a prospective job candidate does have a college degree (in a field that doesn't often matter).

Elizabeth's suitcase arrived on Thursday so we've been busy unpacking and doing laundry since then. Plus orthodontist and hair cuts.
Next week Elizabeth is doing some work experience so we had to buy some suitable trousers. They had to reasonably smart but she is doing engineering so they could also get dirty. Plus James needs new school shirts so we had a shopping trip on Friday.
Friends are coming around to visit in a moment - their daughter was also in Australia

The local paper is running a competition. You have to look in the windows of the 12 shops taking part and identify the object in their display that is from the first world war. In addition one shop has a model of a "Tommy" - that is a soldier.
James and I walked around town today finding the various objects. One shop didn't seem to have anything in their window except the poster saying they were taking part so we will try them another day. Another of the places was a café so we had lunch there. There were things like a medal, a postcard, a soldiers bible (that was in a bookshop!)

There are prizes, three shops have donated gift vouchers. So all correct entries will be entered into the prize draw.
It's also designed to get you into town and into the shops spending money as part of the Love Loughborough promotion

Yesterday was GCSE results day for Elizabeth. These are national exams everyone takes at the end of Year 11 (around the age of 16).
Elizabeth has been doing work experience this week so I went into school to pick up her results envelope. However she wanted to open them herself so I had to wait until the evening.
She did really well; eight A* and two A grades. (A* is 90% or higher).
We out to a Thai restaurant to celebrate, though I think Elizabeth was too tired to properly appreciate it.

Yes, yes. Not sure how old JK Rowling is but she possibly took exams under the old scheme where these were called O Levels.
She will now do two further years at school studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I can't recall the Harry Potter terminology but they are called A Levels in the muggle world!

Yesterday we went to London for the day.
Elizabeth wanted to look around Imperial College and we found they did an hour long tour of the campus (not going to a specific department). The guide was an odd mix of being chatty but not always knowing what to say about a particular location. I guess the weather didn't help - the rain was pretty heavy at times and the guide didn't have any waterproof clothes or an umbrella.
We had lunch in the café at the Victoria and Albert museum and then looked around a display on clothing from the 1800's to present day.
in the afternoon we went to Buckingham Palace for a look around the State Rooms. Here you get an audio guide so you can take as long as you want in each room. these rooms are used on formal occasions such as receiving heads of state, ambassadors etc., the presentation of honours/knighthoods and for state dinners. There were various displays showing all the preparation that goes into a State banquet, the garden parties and the honours ceremonies.

So do I... but it won't happen very soon.
However, my parents are leaving on a three-week trip next Wednesday, in which they will fly to London and spend a few days. After that the will board a cruise ship that will take them to Norway and Iceland... and then across the Atlantic. They had been planning this vacation since last year, and were initially planning to include me on the trip...but due to our financial situation, I won't be able to go. This was due in part to my dad being laid off last October, and us taking a week-long trip this past May.

Awww...that's too bad and a little disappointing, I'll bet. I hope they have a good time though.
I don't know the route of how I'll get to Thailand yet. There are several options in flights, one of which does go thru London with a short layover (which I would love to explore a little) but it may not be economical enough for us. Not exactly sure when we are getting out of here anyways, if it's winter, exploring won't be nearly as much fun.. ;D

Had a lovely evening with the former secretary of the building that Carlos worked in at the college. (She retired last year.) One of the nicest people on this planet. Her husband couldn't make it so it was just the three of us. First time she saw the house in person. She said that she watched all the videos before coming over and said that she really enjoyed them. I'm glad.
And of course the three of us b!tched about the prez of the college and what he is doing to it-oh yeah, it is no longer a college is now a university. ::) (As Carlos said in a letter to the editor of our local paper, it went from being "the little college with a big heart to being a minuscule university with a big ego" to which many faculty & former faculty LOVED!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D )

Just got back from a long weekend away.
Every August holiday there is an orienteering event in Yorkshire. We drove up on Friday (with a brief stop off in York for a look round and some lunch). We were camping over the weekend and did lots of orienteering - Friday night, Saturday morning (Dai and the kids did another short course in the afternoon), Sunday morning and a team race today.
We camped on the event campsite with a few other families from our club. On Saturday we went into Pickering for dinner - 11 of us! And last night there was a barbecue.
Mostly we had good weather, but the rain started overnight and today was very wet.

Try over 70 pages. :o :o :o That was my honor's thesis. But, I actually did that in a couple of years. I did a semester of independent study and got 3 credits for the first part of the thesis. Then in my senior year, I did the second part for the paper I had to write for Senior Seminar. So, I pretty much got 3 more credits for the second part, too. ;D ;D ;D And I got to graduate "With Honors."
