I came here 2008, so I at least got in three years before the site started going down.  :o

Most of the people who used to post regularly went over to Facebook. Then some of the ones who stayed seem to have made it harder for new people to come aboard. In the last year, I have seen many newbies get chased off. Things came to a head a few months ago. So, this is the calm AFTER the storm. Hopefully, new blood will climb aboard and won't get chased off.

Rebirth and regeneration?

I think so. Things have a tendency of going in cycles.

See. There is hope:

Plus its the summer (for most of us).  People are away from home or out and about enjoying the nice weather.  It is always more quiet here at this time.

Very much so and was receiving regularly over 1000 posts per day.

With respect, the metric isn't posts-per-day. It's unique-visitors-per-day. Look at the board from the perspective of someone who knows nothing about us and who can allocate maybe 15 minutes to us every couple of days. How much actual conversation is taking place amongst those thousand posts?

We're talking a lot, but we're not saying anything.

Was this website more crowded, say, like in 2007 then today?  ??? ??? :P

For the win.  Even at our worst, there were only 10-20 of those to skip over per day.

I'm sad about the noobs who we chased off, but I'm even more sad about the long-timers we've lost.  Not just the ones who died and the ones who outgrew us, but the ones who left because they took some topics so seriously they felt they could no longer hang out with people like us.  Calm down kids, it's only ones and zeroes.

A few years ago, we had one dude obsessed with year-of-birth issues.  He's been doing it for years here and elsewhere.  Because he's had so many nicknames, we sometimes go off on new people because we think it's him under a new nym again.  Sometimes it is him again.

I'm glad you were still able to find us on Google; that's how I found this place, but that was back when YouTube didn't have most songs already uploaded, and when lyrics sites were still spotty and incomplete, so message boards dedicated to pop culture -- where someone might know the answer even if nobody had asked the question yet -- were the about the only way to find things you couldn't easily search for.

Actually, I was fully aware of inthe00s since it started in 2001. I read the posts everyday. Even then people had strong opinions and i knew sooner or later that there was going to be a clash. There were cracks starting even as early as the mid-00s, but the site was at it's peak in the mid-00s and late 00s!

By the late 00s, like 2008, the cracks were now obvious. Then by like 2012 there were passionate verbal rebellions and fights. And by 2014 those fights had peaked, and now the dust is trying to settle, which would explain why it's so quiet at times.

There have been clashes since I started here. Some resulted in mad exodus from the board-only for most of those who left came back again. Sometime they even came back in the same day they left. There have been an old joke about Inthe00s, it is like the Hotel California. You can check out but you can never leave. Is that still true? Only time will tell.

Hi DemiLover89.

Sadly, Inthe00s became it's own worst enemy.

You would think with the advent and popularity of Facebook that Inthe00s would be grateful for new membership regardless of where it came from. Instead of welcoming new people to the forum (like we did back in Inthe00s hey-day), certain members with their pomposity and self-righteousness chased them away. Some members that were chased away and banned included a set of people who liked to talk about the difference between certain years and eras. They were classed as Decadeologists. I was not around when Inthe00s 'declared war' on these people but I still don't understand why they were banned and never will because, whether they were annoying or not, they were still talking about things that was relevant to the forum. In fact they were talking about topics based on what the forum was initially about. They didn't seem to harm anybody.

I wanted to make a comeback a year or so ago to become a regular contributing member but I realised the tone of the forum changed dramatically since I left in 2005. Yes, there has always been clashes of opinion and people have left the forum as a result but the lack of tolerance when I came back was suffocating.

I told people I was a Jehovah's Witness because this has always been a part of who I am even when I first started on the boards in the early 2000s to now. This resulted in heated discussions and certain members telling me to leave a religion I believe to be true. The strife and hassle as a result of expressing my views got so ridiculous in such a short period of time I had no choice but to walk away. Was I trying to convert anybody to my beliefs? No. I was merely doing what every member here should be allowed to do and that is have the freedom, within the forum rules, to express myself as a human being.

Can Inthe00s be as popular as it used to be back in the early/mid 2000s? I don't know but the ethos of this forum could definitely change for the better. It used to be fun, lively and a joy to be. I remember coming back from work late at night, turning on my computer and enjoying my virtual friends from all over the world. With the right attitude it could return to that.

This is how I understand the situation; Instead of chasing members off because they are different why not celebrate that difference with them as they arrive? We never know we might understand another perspective.

DemiLover89, if you enjoy these forums and think they are fun keep enjoying them. This forum needs and thrives on people with your outlook. :)

From a longtimer's perspective since 2005 (from my other account)...

I firmly admit in retrospect, I was part of the problem years ago. I liked things the way they were in the early years (05-07) and resented when that started changing, so I ended up getting annoyed with some people over some things I shouldn't have, which I really do apologize for. Perhaps some people had it in for me since I was always part of the pop culture/decade stuff too...albeit I've always tried to do it in moderation and not go overboard with it, or never make a thread JUST about that.

I returned briefly a couple years ago in 2012 to a lukewarm reaction, so I was initially pretty apprehensive about giving it another shot this time, but so far everything's been well and I hope everybody can get along as best as possible. I'll always do my best to.

To be honest, I'd rather have a friendly board that was quiet/less busy, than a jamming one where fights broke out left and right. :D

Well, the actual banning of Decadeology happened mainly due to a former member who would spam multiple threads like this:

What did people think of the 1980s in 1991?
What did people think of the 1980s in 1992?
What did people think of the 1980s in 1993?

I do remember seeing the threads like that in large numbers myself, but I just skipped past them and went to where I wanted to post.

I have admittedly teased the decadeology thing alittle bit myself, but I was joking around and not being serious by it.

Hi Step-chan.

I did a small archive check of the member (s) you are talking about. The first 'decadeologist' I remember was woops and the other was Donnie Darko. I am not too sure they are one and the same. I checked out a few decadeology type threads they did in 2006 and I don't think it was a spamming exercise because the member created other threads that weren't decadeology related and there was positive/neutral interest in the threads he made.

Marty McFly above (now called BayAreaNostalgist1981) took part in and seemed to enjoy those threads too. Should he be classed as a spammer because he had a legitimate interest in this topic? No.

Decadeology doesn't really interest me and I believe there may be a certain amount of obsession with the topic but I could talk about professional wrestling all day and that doesn't mean I should be banned for it. We all have our different turn-ons. As said before, I really believe there could have been a section on Inthe00s devoted to this niche subject. That would have determined whether woops, Darko and other members dealing with this topic, were spammers or not. The people creating song parodies have a section to themselves and I consider that just as niche as decadeology.

There was no need for such melodrama.

Thanks for being a voice of reason...haven't talked with you in years, but I recall you always being a nice guy.

Oh you probably weren't on here in 2008 so parts of this kinda seem out of context to you, but it wasn't just about that. The tone of the boards in general were changing and certain things annoyed me and I got needlessly upset over it. Ever since then, I got the feeling certain people resented or didn't like me, probably partially because of that and partially due to my friendship with Donnie Darko & participating in decade threads. No matter what though, I'm cool with everyone as long as they are with me, and I don't hold grudges, I'm always ready to bury the hatchet and apologize. :)

For the record, as far as the decadeology itself is concerned, I never ever had a problem with people disliking or finding it silly (I admit it's geeky myself all the time, lol)...I suppose the only thing that offended me was the attitude some posters held about anyone who participated in it...that they were a loser with no life, and no responsible adult could possibly remember or care about minute details. As if one nerdy interest negated every other aspect of a human being...that's what I found hurtful. It seemed like a totally Republican attitude.  ;D

p.s. I kinda think it's not what you do but how you do it, and going by that, almost anything could technically be spam or could be legit. :D Moderation is the key to most things imo.

Like others have said, decadeology never interested me & I just skipped over those threads. But, I do admit that I did make fun of it a bit. I did have an issue with the spamming of the boards with thread after thread after thread. It if was kept to just one or two threads I don't think there would have been a problem with it. It was mainly the spamming that did it.

As for Donnie Darko, I didn't mind him. In fact, I had a few conversations with him about coins-not decadeology. The issue was he spammed the boards with these threads and after several warnings, he still did it which is why he got banned. Then after he was banned, he kept coming back & back & back and did the exact same thing that got him banned in the first place.

There have been several who felt they were the "decadeology police" and if anything smelled like decadeology, they jumped all over that person instead of just reporting it so the thread could just be removed. Then the threads making fun of decadeology started to appear. Again, I admit that I did join in in making fun of it but then those threads started to breed and the "make fun of decadeology" threads started to spam the boards as bad as the decadeology threads did.

But it didn't stop at the decadeologiests. I have seen a lot of board members jump all over newbies because these seemed "different" or a little on the weird side. It was like it was open season on newbies who realized that they weren't welcomed here and left. If you check out some older threads you can see it for yourself-the ones that didn't get deleted because they turned too nasty. And then these same people wondered why this place was so dead.

I just hope that this is a new beginning for the boards and newbies can be welcomed-as well as oldies.  ;)

You are right, I don't know the ins-and-outs of it but I do remember you being unhappy with the forum around this time period. It's quite funny how 'forum nostalgia' seems to kick in for some veterans like me with my cranky; "it 'aint like it used to be" mood but, as you have experienced, things don't stay the same. All we have is the present and the ability to enjoy things now before they are no more.

I am glad that things are sorted with you now.

My thoughts are similar. I love really old UK adverts from the 1970s up until the early 1990s but does that define who I am? Of course not. That's the amazing thing about life, we all have these complicated and quirky hobbies and interests that people may not even know exist.

I think what bothered me the most was "Today it's decadeology, what are they going to ban tomorrow?" Before you know it we'll have lost our freedom of expression.

p.s. I kinda think it's not what you do but how you do it, and going by that, almost anything could technically be spam or could be legit. :D Moderation is the key to most things imo.

In total agreement. I don't think woops did himself any favours by flooding the forum with it but...well...there you go.

I just hope that this is a new beginning for the boards and newbies can be welcomed-as well as oldies.  ;)

woops wasn't really into the decadeology.  He was into Debbie Gibson, probably more than someone his age should be, but I should not be one to judge as I am 10 years older than my celebrity crush.  I understood his obsession with Debbie, but what I never understood was why he always posted the most unflattering photos of her as his avatar and signature.

Speaking of decadeology, I was probably the most vocal against it and not only because it turned into spam, but because those who were discussing it were having recycled discussions about the same thing, all which didn't really have an answer because the questions made no sense.  Plus, alot of the content within those topics were huge essay style posts that no one wants to read because they are way too detailed and not generally paragraphed.  Decades can be discussed and those discussions can make sense.  I'd atleast like to believe that, but I've never seen it for it to be believed

I don't come to this forum as much as I used to, but I won't ever leave.  I've come to far to quit now.

Those 'reasons' aren't good enough to ban people from a forum who aren't breaking forum rules.

Apart from ChuckyG who created the forum and therefore has the final say in these things, who really decides what is spam and what isn't? If members are replying to a thread regardless of how trivial or recycled it seems to be to you that doesn't mean it is invalid. There is stuff on this forum that I think is trivial to the point of spam but I know there is a genuine interest in it so I understand it to be valid.

You mention essay-like posts. This isn't Twitter. We have the freedom to express ourselves with as many letters or words as possible. If people want to make essays and people read and respond to them neutrally or positively, again, that doesn't make what they say invalid. To me, regardless of whether it appears to make sense or not, it means the member typing it is enthusiastic about what s/he is talking about. Spammers don't have that kind of interest in their subject matter. They usually leave high speed chaos or leave adverts with links on them and rarely return to their own thread.

They weren't banned for the content they posted, but for constantly spamming the boards with similar topics all about the same thing.  When the same person starts 20 topics in a row, all within like 5 minutes, all about the exact same thing, it's a bit much.  And when they are told to stop, and don't, then it's an issue

I don't mind essay like posts.  I love a good read, but when the spacing isn't there, it gets a little hard to read, and those posts often get ignored.

Mainly responding to the bolded. I did talk with someone else on here that if I did have my own forum, I would allow it(In fact, I actually don't find Decadeology annoying to deal with overall, unlike a couple of other things).

As said in a previous post, if people actually thought for a second and put decadelogy into a separate section (like the song parady members get) instead of being all melodramatic and ridiculous about it. You would have ALL got what you wanted.

I discovered the forum this year. I was aware of Am I Right long ago, but that was it. I seem to have joined right on the end of a troll phase. The forums and topics I stick to tend to be strictly nostalgia for decades I lived through. Starting topics is hard because I never know what was done already. The members who start and reply to topics in those decade sections are often newer members themselves. Something I don't like seeing, without mentioning names, is certain people being judged too quickly and told off when they aren't trolling and aren't meaning to be rude. Just being new and not entirely aware of the forum culture before joining in isn't a crime.

The guy kept trying to make Debbie Gibson happen, again!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I hope he's not reading this.  :( :(

I kinda hope he is.  He was funny.  We all have our fandoms and our obsessions, present company included (duh!).  That's part of what makes a board fun; that guy was our resident expert on all things Gibsonesque.  Having people to whom you know you can count on to answer even the most obscure reference to someone who, herself, has now faded into obscurity, is part of what makes a forum work.

I don't come to this forum as much as I used to, but I won't ever leave.  I've come to far to quit now.

I took a break, but I, too, wound up back here.

So apart from a flameout that involved the bumping of half the food threads on the board, what have I missed?

That's about it. All's quiet on the western (or eastern) front which is kind of nice if you ask me. I think I have had enough drama from this place to last quite a while.

Same here, there's been too much drama in the past couple of years.

ugh, thanks for beating this dead horse again.  I remember having these same exact points raised 8 years ago when it first turned up.

The decadalogy stuff wasn't confined to just a couple threads.  It appeared EVERYWHERE.  Every topic at one point had one of the handful of people popping in to add some off topic decadology "observation".  They created dozens of new topics in every board.

They wanted their own board when we shut down the spamming.  Well, they went off and started their own board on another site.  No one wanted to post on it. So they came back.

Ultimately the public response from the older members was what they really wanted.  It is the very definition of trolling.  That's why in the end it was better to take a zero tolerance position on it.

We had three admins at one point because we had three admins worth of their crap to remove every day.

As for the slow down on the site most of that can be attributed to the fact that the websites the board is designed to "support" like inthe80s and amIright are nowhere near as popular as they once were. I don't have the time to devote to them like I once did and the traffic to those sites and this one suffers as a result. I've also been busy building a new website from scratch using technologies I've only briefly used before. So that also wears away at how much effort I can devote to the site as well.

I have a Gmail account and haven't joined Google+. Google Groups just look like they're a collection of old material from way way way back when, and not actual groups for fandoms and discussions.

Remember it is summer. The boards are ALWAYS slower in summer. And if you think it is slow, make a post or two. Start an interesting topic. You might be surprised. If you build it, they will come.

And plus you could make the topic interesting which brings in the guys that will most likely respond to your topic.

Even so, that could be difficult in one way or another. (Not to sound like a pessimist, but that's what I've observed.)
