Subject: What does January have in store for us?!
Written By: Ripley on 12/26/13 at 6:24 pm
I hope no one minds that I'm starting the January thread. ;)
So does anyone have plans for the month yet? And looking ahead, is there anything worth mentioning happening in 2014?

You are so right. She just used some of her Christmas money to buy make-up. I miss the Barbie Doll days.

Oh yeah. One more test and she can get her license. The only thing about that that scares me is what is the insurance bill going to do. eek

The most amazing thing happen this morning. I was putting clothes away-something that I had been putting for a LONG time. :-[ I went into the closet and as I was putting away my sweaters, I saw peeking out from the stuff I have hanging up was a beautiful maroon gown! :o :o :o :o Where did THAT come from? I don't remember buying it but I must have. And the question is WHEN did I buy it?
I think I know. It was before we took our trip. I bought a whole bunch of new clothes. When I got home, I found a bunch of them and didn't remember buying any of them. It must have been that same shopping trip.
Maybe I'm getting old that I don't remember buying new clothes. :-\\ Maybe I should look around. Who knows what else I can find. :D ;D ;D ;D

Spent the evening out of state. Went to Boston, actually Brighton. Got to spend some time with my dear sister for a good while. Was fun. It was a great day! I'm glad I went on a day like today the weather was ok...but it was still freezing cold! At least it didn't snow. But that will change very soon with the Winter/snow storm that is coming this way. I hope it will not be as bad as everyone is saying it will be.

My niece's birthday is the day before. It really sucked because I would buy her flowers for those special birthdays (her 16th, her 21st, etc) and the prices were ALWAYS so much higher. My sister (her mother) told me that she always had a hard time finding her presents because the stores hadn't restocked from Christmas by that time. She said that she always had to get something in Dec.

That's a good idea. I once though of doing that myself. An MLIS (The Master of Library and Information Science degree). It's what most libraries look for (in Canada, probably the same for America) if you want a librarian position. Sometimes you can get by with an MLS (Master of Library Science ).
All you need is $ an a bachelor's degree. I can't recall how many years of schooling it was when I checked up on it, but there are schools that offer an accelerated program as well (complete the degree quicker)

In fact... all next week, I will be taking an assessment at the Ventura Adult Continuing Education center, to learn various office and computing skills.

Thanks Everyone for the well wishes!
Now today I got a phone call, it was an unknown number and I didn't answer (the last thing I want to hear after Christmas is I owe for something, I was not planning on :P). They then left voicemail from and it id'd from Nebraska... I didn't think anything about it. I listened to it later, and it was the human resource personnel from a local company about a procurement position that I applied for. I am supposed to call them back Monday morning!
In the past 2 weeks, I hadn't heard from anyone for months prior to that, I have had a job interview, received a letter from community college, received an email from forestry company, and now a phone call from local company.. Eeeeeekk but I can't complain! Fingers crossed!!!

I hope it turns out well for you.

Crossing everything I can for you. :)
I am taking this weekend to relax. I woke up in the middle of the night Thursday, super dizzy. I would roll over and my head would spin. By yesterday morning it had subsided mostly of the way. I was still light headed and if I made sudden moves, the room would spin. Thankfully I had to do a transcript at work yesterday, so I sat most of the day. I don't feel it today, but I am going to take it easy just in case.

a polar vortex is a huge blob of dangerously frigid cold air that comes down from The North Pole and make a clockwise rotation over half the 50 states leaving everyone in bitter cold weather with temperatures below zero.

If you need to have two lines in one cell ie
TAX
RETURNS vs TAX RETURNS
then type TAX (hit CTL + Enter) and RETURNS will type on the next line...
to get a dash in a cell... type - then hit tab...do not hit enter...it tries to come up with some weird calculation....
to get cells to tabulate...highlight the ones you want to add and hit the backwards E... it looks like the greek letter for Sigma
http://www.clker.com/cliparts/F/L/x/i/x/3/sigma-th.png
I make a lot of pie charts for the chief of police because that's how he likes to see his stats... but I don't know how to easily give tips on those.
to get a cell to not change format say you type 10/31 and it wants to read Oct 31 just right click the cell or cells and select format then choose the option you like best .... I usually choose text....because then it just keeps things as I typed them...
to sort alphabettically or by increase click data then find sort on the tool bar.
I hope some of this helps... I don't know what you need to know.

I could tell you some, since I've been working with it regularly (and I even spent a few hours this morning working on it as the final part of my assessment at V.A.C.E. this week)... but I wouldn't know where to start. However, Q gave some helpful tips in the above post.
Wait... I do know one thing I can suggest. To make an "absolute reference", type dollar-signs before the letter and number of the cell. This is helpful if you want to drag a formula down or across to other cells and want to reference the same cell (particularly if it has a value you wanna refer to in multiple cells). For example, cell B5 would be written as $B$5 for an absolute reference.

When possibly calculating a rate of increase or discount... or something like that.
An example of its usage can be found here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/get-to-know-excel-enter-formulas-RZ006107930.aspx?section=13
From that site: "Use absolute references to refer to cells that you don't want to change as the formula is copied."

And in the afternoon we went to a wedding; a musician friend of ours was marrying his girlfriend, who is a hairstylist. They are friendly people; my parents and I have known them for several years. We had a nice time. There were literally hundreds of guests.

One of my favorite comedians (Jen Kober) was performing on campus today from 8-10... I was supposed to start work at 930 but got permission to come in late so I could go see her.
I've seen her perform about 10 times so I know her main jokes really well but her audience interaction is always fresh and I've never seen her work a college crowd so that was fun to watch.
I first met her about 4 years ago - maybe 5 I don't know... when she was performing in Ventura. It was a Sunday night there were 8 people in the club. I came in late (traffic) she made me introduce myself to the table...they made everyone sit at one table and we all just chatted...it was funny.
We became FB friends and chat often. I let her know when I'm driving to LA to see her. and sometimes I feel the need to let her know I'm not really stalking her. Tonight after the show we got a bite to eat together. It was fun.
She's got a small part in Grudge Match (it's a scene with DeNiro)
she's had small roles in Paranoia, Treme, American Pie Reunion, Texas Killing Fields, Mindy Project, Curb Your Enthusiasm...and she's on Anger Management with Charlie Sheen.

Okay...so, I need to speak to my parents about something they might not like. It is very important that I do and they have to know about it. I know I'm quite old enough and I don't need their permission for anything. But they do have to know of my whereabouts and that my decision requires me to be someplace very, very, very far away from here. Thousands of miles away. They will not see me for a long time. :( I usually just go to my father because he is the easier one to speak to. Only this time I'm concerned he will not be too happy with my "news".

Yes I did realize yesterday that I didn't even say where I was going. Sorry about that everyone. I was supposed to travel to North Africa in the Summer to meet with someone there. I Don't have to go now because they are coming here instead which is better. :) It's not missionary, it's only to meet with someone.

In all honesty it's better they are coming to you.
Call me paranoid and, it's only because I care, when u go out to meet this person tell someone (doesn't have to be your parents) but tell someone you know. Tell them the name of the person you are meeting and date if birth if you have it. If you have a pic of them email it to your friend. Tell them where they are staying and what your plans are that evening.
Chances are nothing will happen and I may sound paranoid but working in law enforcement the first thing I thought was what would the authorities need to know if the worst case scenario happened. I care and want you to be safe.
Finally....and I'm dead serous about this, if you go to dinner and leave the table to go to the bathroom order a new drink. It's better to be hypervigilant than worry about looking rude.
I do hope u have fun tho

Took my wife to the doctor today, regular check-up with her Rheumatoid Arthritis specialist. Every time she sees him, they diagnose her as either her Arthritis is the main issue with Lupus 2nd, or vice-versa. Today Lupus is the doctor's choice as 1st problem.
3rd problem is her eyesight, she has blurred vision and epiretinal membrane. Could be caused by the Lupus or Arthritis medication, no one knows for sure. Tomorrow she goes for another test on her eyes. It's a miracle she can continue with her painting hobby (for those of you on FB, you have seen them)
In a couple of weeks she sees her GP to see if she needs more anxiety meds (since she feels her whole body is falling apart, she gets anxious coz of it. I probably would to)

As for me, well... this month has nothing much in store for me, I think. Nothing planned, anyway.
Trying my hand at some poetry. Not necessarily something that needs to be finished this month, though. Haven't done that in quite a while, and I'm hoping to get something done. Off with a promising start, anyway.
A couple of years ago I entered some of my poems in a national competition, but without any luck. I'm thinking of trying again this year (competition doesn't open until mid-November, so I've got plenty of time).

4.4 on the other hand is quite frightening to people in the Netherlands (and FYI: we have experienced that magnitude or over four times in the past 40 years, the heaviest being a 5.9 earthquake in 1992).

I am very, very sad right now.
My singing voice is completely gone. :\'( I don't know if it is because of my asthma, or something else. I have been told it is because of my asthma actually, but I'm not so sure. Every time I try to sing, and go up a note, I have this shrilly tone in my voice and it sounds really awful. Some friends tried to cheer me up by telling me I just have a high vocal range...but I don't believe it. Some others have told me that it's probably because I don't sing as much as I use to and need lessons. And one laughed at me and said I still sound like I am nine years old, only with the asthma. Wasn't funny of course. I really miss my singing voice though. :\'( Now I have to keep it one dimensional so I won't sound so shrill. :-\\
Anyone in here sing? And, if you do what could be wrong with my singing voice?

I'm sorry to hear this. It may be related to your asthma, it's a good question for your doctor. Also, your friend may be right, maybe a vocal coach can help you figure out why you cant hit notes you used to hit. Or teach you techniques to work around your asthma...
good luck

Snoz is right, go to a vocal coach to help you with your voice.
Yeah, I was thinking about that yesterday.
If I might ask what do you sing? ???
I sing just about anything. I'm not a one dimensional, but since I am having a hard time with my singing voice lately I have to limit myself to being just that. Because if I don't then I will sound like I'm shrieking when I hit the higher notes....I don't know why ? So, I can't sing just anything. This means a lot to me because I've been singing since I first began to speak.

Back on inthe00s for a while... so much going on in my life now...
I have been declared officially disabled and do not have to work, I get full disability and Medicare Part D, my mom calls me lazy & accuses me of gaming the system, but my connective tissues, blood vessels, organ tissues and joints are too frangible to do any kind of physical work, and I am too psychologically fragile & traumatized to handle a workplace situation, and despite my mom bawling about how "I have the body of a football player and am wasting it", I have zero physical strength and it's not safe for me to try to gain any.
The downside is that I am obligated to complete a life skills curriculum that will mostly be taught in my own home to get out of caregiving services, become my own Social Security payee and move out of Eugene, or else I go to a group home, but I hate it here enough and want to get away from the Cascadia Subduction Zone bad enough that I'm doing everything I can to complete it. I have my eyes on cheap land in vast quantities near Bakersfield, CA that I plan to put a singlewide on and cut contact with everyone here once I am across the state line, and this land will likely never even nearly sell out in my lifetime.
I'm back together with my girlfriend now that she said leaving me impulsively for a gaming buddy whom she didn't really like in the end was the biggest mistake she ever made, I think this time it's gonna be forever, I'm invited as a guest of honor at all of the art shows that my art guild is putting on this year, and I made $14.50 off sales of prints. Attached is one pic that'll be juried in February.

Thanks Dagnabbit. Agreed there, and I don't think my mom was equipped to have an autistic child with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome who later developed PTSD and a host of other things & may have schizophrenia slowly manifesting, nor does she (or the rest of the family) see anything wrong with me, they see me as totally normal but a horribly spoiled brat who acted up in school constantly (long story there except that my parents, family traditions about schools, and the school district had much more to do with it than me)

Well I lived through day one!!! But some people barely did! :D. And I am not exaggerating, defibrillator and bagger used to revive woman in the locker room. Medical Emergency right when I was released to lunch break (locker room leads to cafeteria). So it all went down in front of me.
Did you know that turkey deli meat looks like soft serve strawberry ice cream when raw????
And this facility puts less than 1% of their in landfills! EVERYTHING from plastic tape to staples, you have to sort in the 15 differently labeled trash cans to be recycled.
I also got a parking ticket and headlight warning...
I think I need wine!

That should be: doesn't close until mid-November. Still gives me plenty of time, though.

Yep, the instructor contacted me this morning, and said I've been ok'd to start!
This primarily means that I'm gonna have to devote most of my time to the accounting course, but the hours are flexible (since the course is self-paced), so I can come in for half a day if I need to, and I'll hopefully be able to squeeze in some time to volunteer at the places at which I've been volunteering. The course is expected to last between 16-26 weeks.

Winding down after a long busy day downtown doing my first photography session with a person as the model, and on building my professional art page. Very nice person, from my artist guild, also has autism, and we had nice convos to & from shoot sites and to & from my apartment, pics are 100% work-safe/family-friendly & will go in their own thread on the picture board. 8)
Otherwise doing better after 3 days of being mentally & physically trashed, I have an appointment with my therapist Monday 5pm Pacific, could be getting my speech therapy starting up pretty soon, my program seems to be taking off so it will potentially not last as painfully long as I thought it would, and I'm gonna be in several art shows, including one where some of my work will be featured and I'm making that one a big event to try to bring my family & their friends closer together, especially since my mom is at pretty serious risk of stroke plus poor mobility, and will be going to the doc for angiogram and possible surgery the same day I see my therapist.
And I'm glad I got this photo shoot in, since it's supposed to start raining again soon.

Okay, so today I began the accounting course that I took an assessment on earlier this month. It's a multi-part course, with various subjects involved. Today the instructor got me started on a section involving the electronic calculator (otherwise known as an adding machine). The first part is pretty straightforward for me; there are some advanced features on these calculators that I'll be learning about in the next few weeks, such as subtotaling, markups, andsoforth. After the lunchbreak hour, I began the section on basics of the Windows operating system; this includes things like the basics of Windows, how to open/save a file, how to work with word-processing documents, and things like that. This part is scheduled to go for two weeks; I'll probably complete it in less time. Everything is self-paced in the whole course, which is scheduled to take half a year to complete.

Seems like things are going along well for me, we've had about an inch of rain over the past day or so, I took a cool vintage pic (antiques this time) and the negative point was being called names by my dad for buying one of those fuzzy black cat ear hats that are kinda in style now. ::)
And I had a pretty nice zen moment in my staff member's car, oblivious to all around me, except for the rainy windy blur around the car and my music, with Philip Glass' masterpiece "Pruit Igoe" cranked up on my iPod.

There's a possibility that it'll be like that in southern CA again, finally; at 12:30 I stepped outside and saw that there'd been some light drizzle; this was after I'd been inside a building for 4 1/2 hours, doing some work with an adding machine. So far, this accounting program is going fairly well for me; most of what I've done this week has been more or less a review, but I'm sure I will learn some new things in the weeks ahead.

My first week of the accounting course seemed to end on a good note as well. I'm doing very well with the electronic-calculator portion of the course (striving for accuracy more than speed), and today I began learning about MS Word 2010. (Most of it, thus far, seems like a review, but there are some new features and stuff to learn about.)
As for my volunteer-work, I cannot really do much (if any) during the week, since I am in "school" full time; however, the library is open on the weekends, so i can volunteer then if needed. (In fact, I am gonna go there tomorrow; I even let my supervisor know ahead of time.)

It was James's birthday last Tuesday.
Yesterday we had his party. He invited his friends from primary school ("the gang") and we went to a local indoor climbing centre. They had an instructor who was really good with them. They did both bouldering (scrambling up and across) and some top-roping up to about 30 feet and then abseiling down. James even went up blind-folded!
Then in the evening we went out for a meal to an Indian restaurant we hadn't been to before.

Mostly good. The dips with the poppadums were nice and tasty and slightly different to the usual.
Dai had a fish something or another which he wasn't keen on. It wasn't filleted and still had the head on so it was all skin and bones, plus the sauce was really spicy. The rest of us enjoyed our main courses - though James was a bit too full of starters!
