Subject: Insomnia

Written By: Dagwood on 10/28/13 at 7:19 am

Anybody have any good, natural remedies to this problem.  Lately sleep has ran from me.  I hardly slept at all Saturday so last night at 9:30 I went to bed feeling like I wouldn't make the pillow before I was out.  Oh no, it was after midnight.  I just lay there not being able to sleep.

It's not caffeine.  I had a cup of coffee Sunday morning then no more all day.  I drank water all day.  I am so tired right now I could cry.  This is really getting old.

Are you thinking too much about things? That often keeps me awake.  I try to recall pleasant fun experiences from years ago, and that helps me change my train of thought.

If you are lying in bed and can't sleep after a certain time period (let's say 20-30 minutes), get out of bed, change your environment. Go to a different room.  Often I will just sit on the couch and fall asleep there. That works for me, hope if works for you.

That's a good idea.  I will give that a shot.

It's not my brain running away with me.  I am usually just laying there not thinking of anything.  Just laying there.

Bake a thanksgiving meal and eat turkey???

They say to drink tart cherry juice!!!! It has melatonin in it to help you sleep better!

Or there are melatonin capsules!

I like lunesta - but need a script for that (and you do wake in the morning with a dry mouth). I need to only take 1/2 of the little tiny tablet (which gives me fits to split apart- and without the coating tastes really bad)!

I am trying to not go for the sleeping pills.  I will try melatonin, though.  Great idea.  Thanks

You could read a good book or magazine or what your favorite television show.

what no thanksgiving meal???  :)

I hate sleepless nights!  I do not have them often, yet/thankfully... The worse part about lunesta, and I only take 1/2, is by the time I know I am going to be up for awhile, it is too late to take it!  I need to have 8 hours of sleep after I take one or I will be a true walking zombie in a hazy world the next morn!!!!

Dr. Oz was the one who said the cherry juice trick (because cherries are loaded with melatonin).  Wondering if cherry cobbler, cherry pie, or cherry cheesecake would help as well?

I have never tried the melatonin pills, but I know lots that have.  Seem to work if they take them on a regular schedule.  Some need full pill, some only 1/2.  It can't hurt!

Good luck!

I would love to do the Thanksgiving meal thing, but I really can't afford the new wardrobe that would come along with it. ;D

Thanks :)

lol!  But imagine the smells of your house!  You would have the neighborhood begging to come over!!!!  :)

You could call it "A Night of Peace Meal".

But they contain sugar.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but are you feeling guilty about something? Because when I feel guilty about something I can't sleep.

If not, then ignore me away.  ;)

Nothing that I can think of that I feel guilty about.  I don't know why sleep doesn't want to be my friend anymore.

I should create a false facebook I.D. called "Sleep" and maybe you can accept it's friendship request when I send it to you  ;)
:D

Try the melatonin or change your environment if you can't sleep. I would not recommend sleeping pills either unless there is no other option. We already take too many pills as is and it's not good for our bodies.

I don't plan on taking pills unless it becomes a serious necessity.  I will try melatonin.

I actually have that gift of falling asleep and actually dreaming within 5 minutes of hitting the pillow.
Could your insomnia be due to the anxiety of never falling asleep? I used to have that problem when I was a kid, but I have been told that just resting still counts.
The only problem I have with sleep, is that I'm not able to sleep in no matter how late I've been staying up. I'm usually full of adrenaline  after 7 or even 6 sometimes...

This may sound 100% daft but...how old is your bed?

If you've had it for a while, consider getting a new one (or at least a new mattress - the memory foam ones are pricey, but excellent). Although I never had full-blown insomnia as such, I did have a period of being unable to sleep not long ago. Since having the new bed, I drop off within minutes...

If your bed's relatively new and not uncomfortable to your knowledge, well...it was a suggestion!

My bed is a few years old, and it is a memory foam.  Comfy as heck.  The last couple of nights have been good sleep so maybe my insomnia is going away.

our bed is 10 years old, and it was top of the line then...  Just not the funds to replace it right now.  I am wondering if I get a 3-4" memory foam mattress pad if I can extend it's life a little longer!

Oh, good thing. I've just now read this and I wanted to suggest using lavender products, like soap or lotion. I don't have insomnia, but I have used lavender lotion and it's very soothing. It might help you to fall asleep faster.

I want the iComfort bed.  It's high on my lotto win purchase list...right after 84in TV and home w/ a W/D & DW.

;D
