1. Irish Setter named Layla, shared with my mom, passed away when I was 15

White Labrador/blue merle Australian Shepherd mix named Sahara, she was beautiful and looked like a platinum blonde Lab with softer medium-long hair and blue eyes, really loved her and had to give her up to a roommate in the group home I lived in when the place I moved to didn't accept pets, if I had known how to get her registered as an emotional support animal to get around that policy then, I would still have her.
3. Flamepoint Ragdoll/Siamese mix cat named Tommy, ended up in my mom's menagerie of cats when I ended up in the state hospital in 2007

It's the best job I ever had, lasted almost 7 years. Wish it were longer. Running programs for actuaries (based on their estimates) and analysing the result, either for forecasting or quarter end/year end actual figures.
I worked mostly with group life and health insurance polices, some individual insurance in there too.

I worked mostly with group life and health insurance polices, some individual insurance in there too.

I worked for an actuarial firm, based Amsterdam (Actuarieel Bureau Dr. W.G.J. ten Pas). It was the oldest actuarial firm in the country. It was run by a handful of registered actuaries, with a staff of 30, I'd say.
We did no life or health insurance policies (at least not when I started working there). We only worked for pension funds (small independent companies as well as collective funds for entire trade branches, such as the butcher's trade). I don't know about Canada, but over here pension funds are obliged to file annual reports (end of year). Those have to be certified by a registered actuary. So we mainly worked on those reports. Apart from that, we had to deal with all kinds of changes re. the insured: people get fired, they marry, they have kids, they reach the retiring age, they die... Every change has its consequences.

A short time later "our" firm was merged into a larger international company of actuarial businesses (William M. Mercer). Subsequently it was relocated, and by now even the old name has gone. Some people that I knew in my days still work there, though.

I worked for an actuarial firm, based Amsterdam (Actuarieel Bureau Dr. W.G.J. ten Pas). It was the oldest actuarial firm in the country. It was run by a handful of registered actuaries, with a staff of 30, I'd say.
We did no life or health insurance policies (at least not when I started working there). We only worked for pension funds (small independent companies as well as collective funds for entire trade branches, such as the butcher's trade). I don't know about Canada, but over here pension funds are obliged to file annual reports (end of year). Those have to be certified by a registered actuary. So we mainly worked on those reports. Apart from that, we had to deal with all kinds of changes re. the insured: people get fired, they marry, they have kids, they reach the retiring age, they die... Every change has its consequences.

I took the 1st actuary course, (Math exam, calculus) and that was it. I'm glad I didn't fail but I decided not to pursue that field, however I had 3 friends who did and they made it through all 10 exams.
Yes, and "every change had it's consequence". For Life insurance policies, age mattered, gender mattered and whether you were a smoker or non-smoker mattered, sometimes your weight was also a factor and sometimes what job you had as well . Because of my math skills I was able to pinpoint errors very quickly and that was important. As I said earlier, it's the best job I ever had.
