The world is not a crap hole. We are as happy as we make up our minds to be!
That being said, I miss riding my bike. Not having to work. Playing in the sand. Swing sets and slip n slides. My mom.

The toys I played with (blocks, Legos, etc.), and the things I would build with them. I actually still have said items, but they are safely packed in boxes.
I also miss riding my bike around the neighborhood.

Not having to work or worry about bills.
Honestly, I even think I miss school. I know I felt like it was the most awfulest thing in the world. Then I hit the real world where I work every day and, what is this summer vacation kids speak of? How would it be.

I also miss several of the friends I had when I was a kid. I kinda wish we had Facebook and other related stuff 15-20 years ago so I could keep in touch with people after they (or I) move away. But again...not very many people were online yet. :-\\

I second this! I mean, I only work part-time and pay one bill and still go to school. But still, money is a big worry and even though I didn't enjoy elementary school, I didn't worry about it (outside of bullying). You don't realize how easy you have it until you get older. And then it's gonna get even harder for me! Oh God, why do I keep living? :P

Well lets see......
Cassettes are better (Analog and sound better)
VHS tapes are better (Same reason)
Pay Phones (Landlines) are better - MORE RELIABLE,SOUND BETTER
(Dont have much to say about Cable... I MUCH PREFERRED THE ANALOGUE CABLE WE USED TO HAVE OVER THIS NEW DIGITAL TRASH where the picture isnt as good)
Tube TVs (CRT) are MUCH BETTER QUALITY (Better pic, nicer sound)
COMPUTERS though are better than typewriters as you can do MORE with a computer than you can with a typewriter :)

I miss my Big Wheel.
http://www.foodbiker.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/bigwheel.jpg
I've never rode a motorcycle before but sometimes, when I see someone ride past on a Harley-Davidson, I find myself wondering if riding one of those big bikes is as much fun as riding my Big Wheel was when I was 5 years old.
Sometimes I wonder if that's the real appeal of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

When I last rollerskated, it was on the day after Christmas in 1996; at that time, it was nearly four years since the previous time I rollerskated (the second day of 1993), but I seemed to remember how to get on the skating floor without falling down...and it was lotsa fun. :D

Never had one. I had a tricycle that the mail truck ran over. :o :o :o Someone put it out right in the road purposely to have the mail truck run it over. How nice. Then, for my 6th birthday, I got my little blue bike. I remember when I first sat on it, my sisters wheeled me around (we were in the house) and I barely could reach the floor. My dad put training wheels on it for me. I had the bike for YEARS but it kept shrinking. ??? I really don't understand how it did that.
Me on my bike with a neighbor. I think that is the first day I had the training wheels on.

It would be more fun at the rink unless it's like the rink in my area *shudders* creepy place with a bunch of rednecks. :D
I told my husband that he and his best friend really should invest in building a nice, new roller rink. I know they would make tons of money...Friday nights in a small town, it would be the place to go.

Remember when grocery stores had those glass candy machines? Some were a penny, and they went all the way up to a quarter, where you had the chance of getting an incredible toy like:

I often saw those in the stores...they were usually a quarter where I was.
On a related note, there were the "claw" machines as well, where you'd pop in a coin and then you'd move the claw around with a joystick until it was directly above a desired item...and you'd push a button and the claw would descend upon the item and it would be dispensed to you.

I always LOVED those tiny rubber balls that were clear but had glitter in them. At the time, they cost a dime, now I think they are up to a quarter or fifty cents. :-\\ I bought a glittery rubber ball in the dollar store over Christmas shopping, but for some reason, it wasn't as exciting as getting it from the prize machines. :-\\ ???
Apparently I can get 1,000 of those little suckers from the wholesaler for $78. How awesome would it be to let all those bounce at once? lol

Yes, but it isn't quite the same as doing it on the arcade game. You don't have the joystick (which I think is easier than trying to control with the keys, especially on the later levels, where the ghosts move around quicker).

Yeah, many of them weren't very ergonomically designed; they had a knob at the top. I think you have to develop some sort of a strategy on each level.

I agree. In my childhood we had riots, high unemployment and nuclear war threats. It could be argued that little has changed, lol.
What I do miss about my childhood mostly are my nan and grandad. My life was never really the same after my nan died in November 1991. Not quite a case of Paradise Lost but more a case of a severe upsetting of the emotional status quo so-to-speak. Along with the second divorce of my parents around this time, the world seemed a lonely scary place after this and the only way I could combat the feelings was to keep surviving until I found a solution.
Nowadays, I have that emotional status quo but I still watch old movies and TV programmes knowing that my grandparents were alive the first time I was watching them. :)

I remember when it was only a penny. We would go to the "Little Store" (as we called it-never really knew the real name-we just called it the "Little Store") with a handful of pennies and come home with LOTS of candy. I remember one of my sisters had a bowl full of pennies and I didn't think she would miss one or two-because I wanted candy. Come to find out, I spent a 1909 wheatback penny. :-[ From that moment on, I became a collector. (Yup-that's what did it!) About a year or two, I replaced my sister's penny with a 1909 VDB (worth a little bit more than just the 1909). She didn't remember the incident but she accepted my apology-and the penny.

I often did that from my preteen years through junior high; I had some friends in my neighborhood who also rode bikes, and we'd ride them around the neighborhood. Sometimes we'd go into my house; other times I'd go to theirs.
Also, at the time, said neighborhood was still decent; it was later in the 90's (possibly around the time of the Northridge earthquake) when it started to go noticeably downhill.

There was a house in the neighborhood that had a mulberry tree. We were SUPPOSED to ask if we could pick the berries but we never did. But, I don't recall the people EVER coming out of the house and chasing us off. They had a rail fence that we used to climb to get the berries. We would always bring a pail with us to bring some berries home with us but the pail ALWAYS had a hole in it because by the time we got home, the pail was empty. :-\\ ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D To this day, whenever I taste mulberries, it just brings me back to that tree.

Oh yeah, I love mulberries. We used to (still) have a tree in our front yard of my parents home. It used to be lush with them, and I remember them dropping off he tree onto the ground, staining your shoes (or feet as we were often barefoot.) I remember the birds would sit at the top and eat the really high berries then poo on our car in pretty purple-y hues. ;D
I haven't had mulberries in a long time, should get a few next time I go there. The original tree got struck by lightning and split down the middle of the trunk so that my dad and uncles had to saw it down. It was a sad day. But then a new tree start growing up out of the stump and it was just like the other one. Nature is amazing.

Thanks for that info; I'm not sure if I've ever encountered a mulberry, or a mulberry tree.
However, in one American rendition of the children's nursery rhyme "Pop Goes The Weasel", the first line goes "All around the mulberry bush"; maybe that refers to a smaller version of the tree; I'm not sure. :-\\

I do have times where I love them but then I realize they're not always good for me. I guess you can love someone unconditionally but they can be bad for you at times.

Yes they were. In fact, there was even an "Urkel-O's" cereal popular circa 1992, when Family Matters character Steve Urkel was getting wildly popular.

Those were the first five years of my life; I don't have much recollection of them except parts of 1984 and certain events of 1985. I remember being in preschool, I remember some of the toys I had then, and I also remember my maternal grandfather; he passed away in August of '85 at the age of 60, just a week and a half before I started kindergarten. :\'(

I miss the close relationships that I used to have with my cousins. As we've grown up, we grew apart, or maybe that we didn't see each other as much, or really talk much. I used to really consider them friends. Now, they are more like close acquaintences. I always thought we'd be in each others weddings when we grew up, I was always a guest book attendant or rice/birdseed/bubbles passer-outer. Never a bridesmaid.
I miss being able to make friends easily, I've gotten alot more introverted as I grew up, so the ability has seemed to go away.
BTW We had a mulberry tree in out front yard, and it grew very tall (at least 30 foot) then one night, it got struck by lightning, which split it in two right down the middle of it's trunk. We were afraid that it would fall over onto our house that my uncles and dad cut it down. :\'( But lo and behold, a few years later, a new Mulberry tree grew out of the stump of the old tree and now it is at least 30 feet tall. The berries are yummy when they are ripe. Birds love to sit in it and eat the berries then poop on our car, at least the poop is colorful. ;D :D

My mom had similar close relationships with her maternal cousins, as they all lived locally to her when she was growing up. They would always get together on the major holidays (Christmas, Easter, 4th of July); this I know from my mother telling me the stories and from her pictures. Even as they all grew up, they still lived fairly close, except for one who married young and moved to Seattle and has lived there ever since. But in the past 15-20 years, some of them have moved more than 100 miles away (from southern CA), and so have their kids (my second-cousins); however, my mom likes to maintain contact with them, either by phone, snail mail, e-mail, or Facebook.
Even after I was born, we maintained some of these family gatherings and get-togethers (such as Christmas Eve gatherings, which my grandma started to host after my great-grandma passed away in 1988; and Easter egg hunts, which ended after I got too old for them), but as we got older, they were more infrequent. This is due in part to the fact that, as stated above, they moved away. Needless to say, I was actually the second-youngest of the "second-cousins" generation, but I had great times with all of them. :)

That epic Summer of 2006 when I was 10 years old! :D :o Getting a Nintendo DS and Mario Kart DS after finishing 4th grade! Going to YMCA Camp for a week! Then going to my first trip to Savannah, GA for 4 days. Then a surprise trip to Disney World for a WHOLE week and I went to ALL of the parks, that includes Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, MGM Studios, and Epcot Theme Park! I remember staying in this huge hotel room! Then after that long fun trip was over, I went to the first family reunion on my dad's side of the family, which was a great experience and I got to meet tons of family from Detroit, Michigan. Finally, my first trip to the Georgia Aquarium! Which was real sick!

I also miss building lego toys a lot back in 2002 & 2003 when I was 6 & 7, I was also obsessed with Planet Hot Wheels at the time as well, not just the toys, but even the CD-ROM games for it and the online game where you put in codes to get new cars and unlock different engines/parts! It was an underrated franchise that I really miss, it wasn't just plain "Hot Wheels", I'm talking about "Planet Hot Wheels", it was a huge difference with the word "Planet" in it. Too bad it got shutdown back in 2004 and has been forgotten ever since.

I loved the TV series! I only read one of the books though, the Phantom of the Auditorium.
Did you also watch Are You Afraid of the Dark?
I also used to watch PSI Factor with my mom, that was the stuff of nightmares especially since it actually looked real. I'm not sure if that series aired in the US.

I just thought of something else... Playgrounds, especially the monkey bars.
Often times when I drive (or ride in a car) past parks that have playgrounds, I often recall the days when I was little and used to enjoy playing on them. Especially those that have intricate playing structures with adjoining slides and drawbridges; things like that. (By age 12, I determined myself too big to play on them.)
Case in point...something like this:

I outgrew them a year earlier.
In fact, not too long ago I was at a park, walking around to get some fresh air, and I came across a playground area with a safety notice, saying that "{This playground} is designed for children between the ages of 5 and 12," something like that.

My first visit to a roller skating rink was in the late 80's, for a friend's birthday celebration. I wasn't very proficient at roller skating at the time (I was in 3rd grade), but another friend who was there showed me how, and I picked up quite easily.

I knew someone who had that game, and tried to play it, but didn't really understand the objective.
However, after seeing a variation of it on the gameshow Family Game Night in the early 2010s, I have a better understanding (sort of).

It's strange and pretty ironic, that when I was little Nick @ Nite showed Brady Bunch, Threes Company, Jeanie, Lucy, etc. All the old 50s, 60s, and 70s, and ,now there is a generation that is watching 80s, 90s, and early 00s shows( Fresh Prince, Full House, Friends)on the network it's CRAZY man!

Yeah, in the VERY late 2000s they started showing more 00s shows on Nick @ Nite and I was like ''man the times are a CHANGING!''
During the mid 00s(ironically when the core 00s started), that's when Nick @ Nite started showing 80s and 90s series(Murphy Brown, Who's the Boss, Fresh Prince, Full House), and moved away from the 50s, 60s, and 70s shows.

My fourth grade year was kinda like that. However, it was not all bad; there were some good days for me during the school year. For example, there were a couple of field trips that my class went on; I always looked forward to those.

Nope, doesn't ring a bell to me.
The only "Concentration" game I know of is one where you turn cards over and match pairs, like Memory. There was even a television game show of this name; all the cards were numbered and had prizes underneath; matching a pair would earn you the prize and a picture puzzle (in rebus form) would be under the cards. The object would be to solve the puzzle.

I still have most-not all of those on VHS and some I don't see in your pic. I even have the Little Mermaid with the "banned" cover.
I bought these as an adult. People would come over to my place and see all my Disney movies, look around and say, "You don't have any kids." I would say the movies were for me and they would laugh. Then they would say, "Oh you have ______(and name some movie that was in my collection). Can we watch it?" Then I would laugh. I didn't lie to anyone or to myself that I love the movies.
When we moved two years ago, I was going through my VHS tapes and figuring out which ones to get rid of and which ones to keep. I just couldn't part with any of the Disney ones. At this point, I haven't gotten rid of any of them yet but many of my VHS tapes are in the pile to go away-just not the Disney ones.

I got my first and only Jem doll in 1986 when I graduated Kindergarten. The doll's package would include a cassette with music!

I know this is an old post. We sold a doll similar to this (it was Flash & Sizzle Jem) last year for $50.

I miss having lots of friends. :(
We will always be your friends
I miss some of the friends I had during my childhood years as well, although I've been able to reconnect with a few of them on Facebook. Including one I've known since we were toddlers.

My coloring books and Crayola crayons. I also miss the color by numbers sheets they would give to us in Grade school, they were so much fun to do!

I loved those mazes and puzzle books. Can't remember what the ones I had were called. They were small, but thick, with things to do on front and back of each page, and were very reasonable in price as much as I grasped the concept as a little girl.

I miss my little 110 model camera. I was constantly taking photos. I did some nice ones that I wish I could find now. Probably in box somewhere, stuck to other random photo, because that's what photos do, stick together. I would have loved having digital cameras then, but probably wouldn't have printed many pictures. I don't now!
My hands shake so much now, it's rare to have a not blurry photo. Oh well!

I had such activity books as well, but I don't remember the names of any of them. The only thing(s) I cared about were the activities inside! :)

I miss the old MTV of the 90s and early 00s. Particularly TRL. Carson Daly was a big part of my life for many, many years and I saw LOADS of musical artists I loved on that show. Just MTV in general when it was still about the music. That's what influenced me to like pop and rock music in my teens. Whether I was pretending to be Britney Spears before her nervous breakdown or the extra member to My Chemical Romance, life was good.

I always thought the late 90s/early 2000s MTV was the best, since it had Daria and Clone High in it.

Even as an adult I've seen 4 packs of those at the dollar store. In fact, I think there might be some in my stationary box!

I didn't get to see it much, since we did not subscribe to cable tv at my old home. But I probably would have liked it (but then again, in my single-digit years I didn't know enough about pop culture to fully understand it).

I used to watch Video Hits and GRT to get my music video fix and Toronto Rocks with the Maj. :) That was my life as a pre-teen child.

I tried watching MTV recently and it just didn't feel the same, i think the last time i watched it was probably 2011ish when "world of jenks or the buried life" was on, those were really the only shows i watched then plus the real world up until san diego..
I loved the old shows with Say what karaoke, jackass, daria and my personal favs Kenny vs. Spenny, Cribs, Pimp my ride and Punk'd..
Not on MTV but does anyone remember Video on Trial? it was on early/mid 2000's

As a matter of fact it's been over 30 years since Arias and Symphonies was released. I believe Sandy Horne and Gord Deppe reunited with Rob Preuss and Derrick Ross for a show at the Revival Bar in Toronto in 2012. :)

Everytime I hear that song I'm 7 years old again. And this is what the 1980s was about? Music with fun and danceable beats to it.

When I was a kid in the '80s my mom would always watch VH1 or MTV throughout the day, and I would watch with her. This was the MTV evening video lineup during the evenings around '86, they also played stuff from previous years:
Whitney Houston - How will I know
Peter Gabrielle - Sledgehammer
Bangles - Walk like an Egyptian
Eddie Money - Take me home tonight
Bon Jovi - Livin on a prayer
Your love - Outfield
Heart - These dreams
Starship - Sara
Madonna - Papa don't preach
Wham! - Wake me up before you gogo
Madonna - La Isla Bonita
And they would replay them!
