Subject: Freebies/Prizes?
Written By: CatwomanofV on 04/03/10 at 3:14 pm
What are some of the freebies you have received or what have you won?
For me:
-I won a door once. Ok, not exactly a door but a door prize-it was a big, huge bar light. I was thrilled to win it even though I didn't like it but I sold it for $20 so that was cool.
-Way back in the dark ages (the '80s) I won a Michelin Man magnet through the Weather Channel, which still sits on my refrigerator.
-I won a tire rotation from a local fund raiser.
-We got a couple of freebie/cheapo digital camera that were basically a piece of sh!t.
- I also got some freebie coins when I ordered other coins from some places.
I know there are more but that is all I can think of right now.

When I was eight years old I won a plaque from Tinker Toys for coming up with an original design using their product. If you know Tinker Toys, they include plans with their sticks and connectors to make ferris wheels, oil rigs, cars, etc, and way back when they used to run a contest to come up with something that wasn't in their plans for a chance at something like a $1000 savings bond. I came up with something mostly by accident, my folks sent in a drawing of it and while I didn't win the $1000 bond, I did recieve a plaque that year for being my states winner, maybe everybody won who sent something in I don't know.
That same year I won first place for my wishing well valentines box in school, I was more proud of my valentines box than my Tinker Toy award. ;D First place was one of those boxes of candy hearts.
Won $100 from Coke in one of their contests in the mid 80's. Up to that point it was always "You won a free Coke".
Won 8 NFL sport drink bottles from Ocean Spray in the mid 90's. They ran a contest on their small bottles of orange juice in association with the NFL where you could win a sport drink bottle. In three months time I won eight of them.
Won a basketball jersey from can't remember exactly now, I think it was Doritos just a basketball jersey with their corporate logo on it.
Won a turkey at a high school basketball game one time way back when I was in high school. We went to a school to play basketball and their cheerleaders were selling raffle tickets for 10 turkeys to be given away at halftime of our basketball game. 25 cents a piece. Well one of the cheerleaders asked me if I wanted a chance on a ticket and I said 'only if I'm guaranteed to win'. The cheerleader flirted back, "oh I know you'll win", so I bought the ticket. Naturally at halftime we are in our locker room, so we don't hear the winners' names being announced. One of our student managers comes in during our coach's half time talk with a frozen turkey and she hands it to me, and whispered to me this is from Becky, the name of the cheerleader that sold me the ticket. :D Oh did I get grief for that from my buddy who had overheard the whole conversation when I bought the ticket.
Won a large pizza from an area pizza joint by knowing the answer to a trivia question that a radio station would do every morning. This one happened to be about baseball, which is some useless knowledge of mine.
Won a bike when I was about 10 for coming in second in a local store contest. The store was new and they had a contest where a kid 18 and under who had the most dollars in store receipts put in their mail box after three months time won a trip to Disney World. Well my cousin apparently was more popular than me beause he won big time and I won a bike. Looking back at it now, I probably had more fun with the bike than he did at Disney World. lol
Won first place, I think 10 bucks, in a Halloween costume contest when I was about 10 or 11. Went to a Halloween carnival dressed as a headless person. It had to look pretty real because when I walked into the building, it scared the hell out of a lot of little kids, I can still hear their screams as they went running the other way when they saw me. :D Even made a few adults jump a bit too when they turned to see me.
Won $250 playing slots at a casino, the only time I ever played. Didn't cost me a dime (or in this case a quarter) to play. My company gave us an employee appreciation day, a half day off work, a roll of quarters and a free lunch at a local Indian Casino. I told them just give the roll of quarters and I'll go home, but they said no I had to go to the Casino to collect. So I went, got my free lunch, my roll of quarters and thought, what the hell, I played about 10 quarters of the roll that was given me, hit 1000 quarters, collected my 250 bucks and walked out. :D Best days pay I've ever had.
Can't think of any others. I rarely buy a raffle ticket, the time I bought one for the turkey was an exception because the cheerleader was really cute. ;)

Yeah, he was. Gotta tell this story. I was given 4 free tickets to this comedy club from a local radio station (the same one I got the Door's album from). They would give away tickets all the time. I called the station to make a request (which I did A LOT-so they knew me) and was asked if I had my tickets yet. I said no, they I got 4 free tickets. I went with my then husband & someone he worked with & his wife/girlfriend-whatever. I fired up a cig (in those days you could smoke inside) and I guess the smoke was going right at the guy and/or his wife. So, we sort of played musical chairs and I ended up in the chair that the guy was sitting. When the show started, they said that there were some free tickets to see Rich Hall under a few chairs. I reach down and sure enough, the seat that I was sitting in was indeed one that had the free tickets in. The guy was pissed because he was sitting in the chair before we played musical chairs. When we showed up to see Rich Hall, the guy & his wife was there. We question it and he said that he did win free tickets because he put his name into a bowl when we were there for the first show and he won. So he wasn't pissed at me anymore because he got to see Rich Hall for free anyway.
I just remembered another thing that I won. Around the same time, a neighbor & I went to ladies' night at a local club-yes, they had the male dancers. ;) They had a contest who could be the rowdiest/loudest, etc would win a bottle of champagne. My friend & I were sitting at a bar-like table that was against the stage with 3 other women (who we didn't know). The 5 of us together managed to win that bottle of champagne. :D ;D ;D ;D After we won, we talked to the our co-winners and I discovered that I used to work with their husbands. :D ;D ;D

^ nice....
I just remembered that I was at a taping for a TV starring Alyssa Milano (it didn't get picked up) anyway- the warm up guy in the audience had jackets and scripts adn stuff to give away but he didn't give me anything- he apologized and said I was energetic enough he just ran out of stuff to give away.
A month later I was at the taping for the Sherri Shepherd show- the same warm up guy was there- he was giving away prizes left and right... next thing you know he's putting something under my chair...gives me a pat on the shoulder, a wink and finger to the lips (shhhh) I look down and its an autographed script!!!! 8)

Wow, that's an awesome story! Not only did the guy remember you, but you got the best give-away (even if you did have to wait for the second-time around -- patience is a virtue!)

In the early 00s I placed 2nd in a Mars Music store DJ spinoff using the Pioneer CDJ players & mixer. I won a set of Pioneer headphones and an ElectroVoice microphone.
Later that same year I came out to watch some regional competition and they had drawings where I won some DJ Tools records (samples, beats, etc.).
I won some tickets to a local show (some local band) courtesy of G105 Raleigh for answering some Howard Jones trivia during their Flashback Café but when I tried to pass the tix on to my ex-wife (I couldn't pick them up) the DJ got all snotty with me so I told her where she could put those tickets :D

I'm not very lucky so this is all I won from being on this planet for over 3 decades:
-from a hot-potato game at a birthday party, I won a minature writing pad with Snoopy on it
-a medal pendant when my softball team was first when I was 10
-a sweatshirt with a softball logo when my team won again when I was 21
-a first-place ribbon for the best kite at a picnic----and what's funny is that I was totally unaware that there was a contest!
-a watch when there was a draw at work
-$15 on a lottery ticket
