Subject: Depict or Pink Champagne?
Written By: loki 13 on 11/10/09 at 7:01 pm
This discussion started in work and I thought I'd bring it here and get a consensus from the fine members
of this forum.
In the Eagles song Hotel California, what is that you hear after he says, "Mirrors On The Ceiling." I distinctly
hear hear him say, "Depict Champagne on ice." Most people hear it as. "The Pink Champagne On Ice."
Now I'll state my case. In the previous verse it's said., So I Called to The Captain, "Please Bring me my Wine."
He Said, "We Haven't Had That Spirit Here Since Nineteen Sixtynine." Why would they have Pink Champagne
on ice when it was already stated that spirit wasn't there? So I say with the evidence at hand the correct lyric
is Depict Champagne On Ice, what say you?

I say "pink champagne" because champagne is entirely different from wine, so the previous lyric doesn't matter.

Champagne is nothing more than wine with bubbles.

Yes yes, I just got schooled on alcohol by my friend because I really don't give two shyts about wine and champagne. But that leads me to the conclusion that Henley either didn't know or didn't care that they are the same beverage, hence the lyric that was sung, which was, "pink champagne on ice", making it sound like two different products.

I've always heard pink champagne on ice. It does mention before that they don't have wine. Consider the mirrors on the ceiling line and the we are all just visitors here of our on device. The pink champagne was used to describe something nice the can lure someone into L.
One of my favorate songs

Ok the bit where he says 'please bring me my wine' he's not naming which wine he wants specifically. Just becuase they don't have that one doesn't mean they don't have others, including pink champagne!
The reply 'we haven't had that spirit here' could refer to the fact that they don't have the specific drink he was asking for (though they may have plenty of others).
I personally think it's meant to mean spirit as in attitude not alcohol.
Wine is not a spirit so why would a bartender say 'we don't have that spirit' when someone has asked for wine, they above all others would know wine isn't a spirit.

Or we can just conclude that this song makes no f*cking sense whatsoever and who really cares what Henley was saying. I'm sure he didn't as long as he was making the money.

Okay, I get the consensus, I don't agree but that's nothing new. I guess it's just so me, to quote two other songs;
I stand alone and I won't back down.
I am not an Eagles fan and I don't own the album but did the lyrics come with the original album?
As far as lyric sites and song books go, they could be wrong. History books around the world tell of
the great ride of Paul Revere but of all the riders that night Revere traveled the shortest distance and
told the least amount of people. All I am trying to say is, print a lie long enough and eventually it will
become truth.

So if Henley himself walked up to you and said, "The correct lyric is 'pink champagne on ice'", you still wouldn't believe him?

meaning the mirrors on the ceiling look like or represent champagne.

The line from every lyrics site I went to:
"The pink champagne on ice"
Listening to the original album version, it definitely sounds like "depict" instead of "the pink".
Listening to some live versions, it sounds like "the pink".
The Unplugged version clears it up though - Don Henley just sings "pink champagne on ice".
Conclusion: he mumbled the line in the original, probably 'cause he was high on coke and out of TP.
I vote for "the pink" being the correct lyric. As to what was originally sung, it's about as clear as decyphering Pearl Jam lyrics.

On a Serious note. I agree that the lyric is 'depict' not 'pink' and have always thought that is what it is.
However I take it to mean 'depict champagne on ice' as in the mirrors actually show the reflection of a champagne bottle that is on ice below. Makes much more sense, because mirrors, even tiny mosaic ones don't look like or represent an ice bucket with a bottle of champagne in it no matter how hard you try to see it!
As I said before champagne is a wine not a spirit so I don't think that that line means there was no champagne in the hotel.
Love the song, always have, and any mention of champagne on ice gets the thumbs up in my book YUM!

Ah, but if the mirror was cut out in the shape of bucket and bottle it would then be a depiction. Glass can be cut in any shape,
besides, a vivid imagination or help of a little substance are all you need to see anything. ;D
I didn't mean for this to turn into a song analysis, I just wanted to know what people hear in the song.
A did you know moment (According to songfacts):
The line "They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast" is a reference to Steely Dan. The bands shared
the same manager and had a friendly rivalry. The year before, Steely Dan included the line "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors
are listening" on their song "Everything You Did."

I was under until I gor married and was advised that I (and my Mum) were incorrect and it has been over ever since! From what I can tell under has less chance of the paper being caught and pulled (making a mess ....especially when younger children are involved)..while over is easier for me to get a hold of the paper (the wall does not get in the way). Very scientific stuff.... ;)

Hotel California was played on the radio again today which sparked this discussion all over again. I told the guys
in work what the consensus of this forum was and was told that so many people can't be wrong. I told them
I disagreed and they could be wrong but I was reminded by the one guy who agrees with me that I not the
best authority on correctly hearing lyrics. I've never heard the obvious misheard lyrics such as There's a
Bathroom on the right, or 'Scuse me While Kiss This Guy, or Chucky's own Hold Me Closer Tony
Danza. However, to this day I still hear Big Ol' Jam At The Lighthouse instead of Big Ol' Jet Airliner,
Memories Of Elvis Are Playing In The Band instead of Tambourines And Elephants and When The
Tooth Is Gone You realize instead of When The Truth Is Found To Be Lies. I guess he's right, it will be
pink champagne from here on out.

Yes, I realize it makes no sense whatsoever - but I figured they were all so stoned that it didn't matter to them, it fit and so they left it. ;D
Apparently I now have to change my singing lyrics to say "pink" or "depict"... I am so confused!!! :D ;D ;D

I thought I had it figured last night.
When I pulled out The Best of cd last night to load on iTunes, I noticed there is a booklet in the cd case. I pulled it out thinking "YES! The lyrics have to be in here..." and of course they aren't. All the boys do is talk about how the song came about or meanings in the song. I was a sad panda!
You're confused?! I also hear 'we drink champagne on ice' :D ;D
And that works too! ;)
I think it is because of the little "dey" sound in front of what others think sounds like pink.
I mean, obviously, if it was sung "pink" in concert, then it must be so, although perhaps like I said before, they were so stoned when they originally wrote it, they can't remember what the word(s) is/are. Just like their "warm smell of colitas" - colitas meaning the smell of maryjane. ;) ;D

I've always thought it was pink champagne, but I love the idea of "mirrors on the celing depict champagne on ice." That's such a cool and different way of looking at it.
Let me ask this question - why does someone have to be right? That's what's so awesome about art and music - we all take something different from it. I take different things from the same song all the time depending on where I am in my life. I love that. So it doesn't really matter who is right and who is wrong. The important thing is that you enjoy the song.
I also loved Gis' interpretation of the line "we haven't had that spirit here since 1969" being more about a general attitude and less about a drink. I've always taken it that way too. Just like the whole idea of "Hotel California" is more of mentality than an actual place. "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave."
