As y'all know, it's been how many years since I signed on here, and I've been too lazy to pick an avatar.

As y'all know, I've also been following the Save the Arcades contest in this thread for most of September, as well as putting in an hour or so a day playing a little Flash shoot-em-up on behalf of my local arcade. 

With one week to go in the contest, it seems to me there's a bet to be made here.  A little quid pro quo, if you will.

There's one week left in the contest.  The prize is up for grabs, and an extra 10 hands on keyboards, eagerly mashing the spacebar while flinging indestructible boxing gloves (NOTE: no email verification needed, use the login/pass on the Starbase site, and just trust me, you want character #4) at countless 'taur, could tip the balance either way, even if you're only putting in 10-15 minutes a day.  What I need (well, what Starbase needs) is hands on keyboards.  My local arcade needs those hands on keyboards more than I need an avatar at the moment.

And thus, inspired by our recently-concluded avatar contest, I hereby place the following bet:

"Board known as 'inthe00s.com', nothing you can come up with can be more embarassing than dropping dead of deep vein thrombosis, so if Starbase wins, bring it on!  Should Starbase Arcade should happen to win the Save the Arcades contest, you - yes, you crazy 00zer folks - shall pick my long-delayed avatar.  Could be something as dignified as Daffy Duck in full Duck Amuck regalia, could be something just plain silly.  Whatever you folks come up with and/or vote on, I shall wear it with pride until 2011.*

* ...and probably forever thereafter, given how lazy I've been at picking one out for myself over the past ~mumble~ years, but if it's really embarassing, I'll reserve the right to change it after Dec. 31, 2010.

If you aren't doing it for Starbase, do it for the lulz!

It'll be interesting to see what avatar the board will pick for you for I am certain that Starbase near San Fran will win the contest.  I'm giving it the old college try anyway.  :)

Well, if you're ever in San Francisco for a vacation or for business, at least you'll know where to play.  (The world needs an arcade atlas!)

Meantime, thanks much -- every point counts, and it's a lot easier on the wrists to spread it out over as many days as possible, rather than grinding for 24 hours straight at the last minute.  Which there'll be some people doing -- but a dozen casual players putting in 20-30 minutes a day for a week can beat one guy doing an all-nighter.

Yeah, I trust the board's collectively-twisted sense of humor to come up with something appropriately nuts! 

It ain't over yet -- but today was pretty good.  From a dead heat 24 hours ago, to Texas/UFO up by 5M just before California/Starbase got off work, and now Starbase has rallied back to a 7M point lead.  For all I know, a decent chunk of that could be due to the efforts of people here.  One of the most fun aspects of the contest is its total anonymity.  The only way you know anything's going on is by watching the numbers change, and it's anyone's guess as to whether it's a bunch of people at a LAN party, or just a few random folks around the net with the headphones on, getting caught up on their listening list, or watching the evening news.
