No, that's not it; I've only been driving for a short while, just not regularly on the freeway.

My dad commutes on the Metrolink train to and from his work, which is in downtown L.A. He enjoys it. It's much better than driving all the way; it saves lotsa gas every week.

I don't know if its the same in the US as in the UK but I know several employers in the UK have said they always look more favourably upon someone who is already working and applying for a job than who has been sat around doing nothing.  Volunteering is the next best thing.  It shows a bit of get up and go


that is true. Large gaps of unemployment are frowned upon- I think that working any job shows an overall willingness to work. but not working at all looks to the HR people like you're waiting for someone to hand you something rather than being a go-getter...

The only way to  conquer the la traffic jeff is to just get out there an start driving.  I know So Cal traffic can be intimidating but it gets easier with practice.

I have done that. In fact, I drove on Highway 101 a total of 3 times in the month of April. The third time was on the 24th of that month, when I had a dentist appointment in Thousand Oaks. My dad came in the car with me since I was going to be traveling on the Conejo Grade for the first time ever, and I needed him to give me some tips as to how to drive up a hill on a curving part of the freeway. I actually did quite well. It was approximately 20 miles one way on Highway 101 alone.

I have a follow-up dentist appointment at the end of this month, so maybe I can try again then.

Or a friend.... I remember a few years ago my friend knew how to drive but didn't have a car so she didn't drive much. She got tired of having to bum rides from friends...
she went out and bought a car but she bought got one with a manual transmission. My friend had never driven stick shift so she and I went driving all over stockton and tracy ca Just driving around till she got the hang of it.... it was a lot of fun----- I'm surprised she didn't lose her transmission in the beginning  ;D  but I'm more surprised I didn't get whiplash  :D

When I say every evening or weekend that's what I mean.  Not three times in a month a few months ago.  I was a reasonably nervous driver when I first started but I realised it was a good skill to have so I drove as much as possible.  I was going out with a guy who lived about 15 miles away.  I could get there by back roads but I made myself go up to motorway (freeway) to practice getting on and off (always the trickiest part to my mind).

Moving to the US I had to contend with driving an automatic on the wrong side of the road.  But its impossible to exist here without a car so I made myself do it.

^I understand totally; I'm just taking it one step at a time because I've only been driving for a couple years. I will do what I feel is best. Still, I will probably try driving on the freeway again to my dentist appointment at the end of this month.

the thing about driving in SO Cal- Specifically anywhere within 50 miles of LA is you have to be an offensive driver... that doesn't mean offend everyone on the road ;D
but you have to be assertive and decisive because hesitating on So Cal freeway can get you and someone else killed.

Jeff it might be a good idea to get out and drive during rush hour traffic... I know it seems strange to say but if you drive to LA during rush hour you get a chance to watch how people change lanes and you can practice making decisions going 10 MPH instead of trying them at 65 MPH. 

There really isn't a lot of time to think when you drive you have to know what you want to do and do it... but karen's right- you really need to get out there and practice. drive the major streets in TO for a week- consistently.

Work your way up to freeway but do it regularly because its the kind of skill that better develops when you use it frequently...plus all you're doing now is sitting around and psyching yourself out. 

Merging onto the freeway is the hardest part... if you can do that well then you're halfway home...


having said all that I detest driving in San Francisco. I always have hated it... give me LA traffic everyday of the week. 

Oh, and one other thing, I've basically stayed in the slow lane when I've done freeway driving. Of course, I don't go slower than molasses, but I am watchful of those around me. And I did make one lane-change...but that's when it was safe to do so. At the moment I am looking for a past post that I wrote explaining about one of my past freeway drives.

Here you have to change lanes quite often because of all the random "Exit Only" lanes that occur.  Even getting onto the I-84 W is tricky from here because as you enter the first two lanes are almost immediately 'Exit Only'.  And drivers aren't very forgiving at letting you into their space.

Feelin' ouchy!

Getting in to the truck last night, some drunk came screaming down the road, ramped over one parked car and hit the truck head on, in the air.
I wake up on the sidewalk with my buddy seeing how I am. I realize my pal was getting in so I run over there, there's a fire in the engine bay and of course, being a real bright spark, I try and get in to the cab. My pal wasn't in there. He was in the street. Get him over to the sidewalk. Don't know what's going. Next thing I remember there's a whole bunch of cops around asking me things I don't know the answers to. So now I'm getting mad, stand up, realize I've bust my foot. Things are pretty sketchy for a while. Then I calm down and just start figuring things out.

Inhaled a lot of smoke, bust my foot, knocked my ass out, bust up my knee pretty good. Nothing too major, nobody got hurt too bad except the fool that tried to kill us and frankly I could care less what happens to his dumb ass.

anyway- I can't stand driving in the slow lane because all of the people coming on to the freeway- some times they arent approaching fast enough- or they realize there isn't room but they decide to come on in anyway...

i do that... when I was in the dispatcher academy I was living in LA for three weeks.  Hollywood, studio City, burbank and beverly hills I know fairly well... but I was in Downtown LA- the police academy is right across from Dodger stadium... and I stayed in a hotel in the heart of Downtown LA. I don't do Downtown LA....ever so every night I would go exploring just to see what's out there.. one night I ended up in compton another in East LA...those were fun nights.  ::)

I totally understand that.  Actually I think the best lane for you is the lane next to the slow lane. that lane also goes closer to the speed limit and people may want in your lane but they are doing so at the same speed you're driving so its easier then having slow people merge in front of you when you're driving 60.

3:30 am, I have been up for two hours, and it isn't looking good for any sleep.  No particular reason, just awake and tired at the same time.

Back at work today and it is pouring with rain.

I agree with karen. you don't have to work at your first job forever. take any job to get work experience..... and money... until you can find a job closer to your field of interest.

I did that quite a bit when we first moved out here - sometimes not delibrately!  It's turned out handy when the Interstate is closed or busy or there's roadworks.  More than once I've been able to tell Dai which way to go because I'd been that route before!



So it's not yet 8.00 a.m. and I've already been running!  I walked down to Elizabeth's school bus stop and as we got there realised she had forgotten to pick up her violin.  So I ran up to the house, got the violin and ran back down again.  Got to the bottom of the drive to see the bus pull away - the stop is along the road from our driveway.  Round trip of about half a mile totally wasted!

Yesterday was such an awful day. First with the kitty at the vet. They gave her a shot of antibiotics and sent her home. Still don't know what is wrong with her but didn't have the time to find out. I called my mother to tell her that we had a change of plans for Nov.'s get-together in Conn. We will be staying with my sister (not "Dawg" but the other sister who lives down there) instead of the motel I told her we will be staying at. She went off on me saying how everyone has a place to stay but her. She was offered but she "couldn't" for whatever reason. She always has some excuse about not being able to do things and then she bitches because all other options run out.  ::) And then she is talking about doing away with the LifeLine (I'm sure many of you remember the big fiasco about getting her that). I called "Dawg" to discuss that with her. She called her-and that wasn't pretty. My mother really wants to stay at "Dawg"'s house but "Dawg" is putting up the entire Oklahoma clan-4 of them. In fact, she is kicking her son out for it (who will be staying at his uncle's house).

Then on top of everything else (and that NOT a pun), we found out that our roof is in serious need. Apparently, the roofers who Carlos THOUGHT were taking care of it-wasn't. We were also under the impression that a slate roof would last forever. How wrong we were. So we are going to go with a metal one that is maintenance-free. Unfortunately, it cost MEGA-BUCKS. This is AFTER we already committed to buying that house in PR. We had a check that we were going to open a bank account in PR & use to do the renovations. Well, that is now going for the roof. Those renovations are just going to have to wait. We weren't planning to go down until Jan. anyway so it is not a big rush on that. The work on the roof will start next week when we aren't here. When we get back, we have to figure out how to pay for the rest of the roof.  ::)

Last night, we went to dinner-at the restaurant where we spend our anniversary because that is where we had our reception. At first we were told that the owner just left. Oh well. No champagne this year. But she showed up right as we were about to leave. We talked for a bit but she still didn't give us the bottle of champagne. Oh well. No biggie. After having a fuzzy navel with dinner, my nerves calmed down a bit. So I was able to deal with the fact that there was a message from "Dawg" when we got home. I called her and we both basically bitched about our mother.


Today, Carlos has a doc appointment, I have a dentist appointment.  8-P  Finishing up packing, doing last minute stuff and we leave here about 3 or so this afternoon. We will spend the night at Carlos' daughter's house and then we fly out early tomorrow morning.

God, how I HATE flying!

Had to take him to the Dr. for allergy testing.
The gave him zyrtec and flonase, but also took 4 vials of blood!
Apparently, our health insurance is trying to get away from the back test for allergies, so they do it in the form of regular blood work now. ::) We should know the results in 7-10 business days! Fun fun!

He actually has needed it done for a while. He breaks out in hives on his neck, armpits and other warm spots, for no apparent reason at all.
I have changed his laundry detergent, his shower gels/soap, his shampoo, stopped him from wearing cologne, even changed his deodorant, but the hives still come back. He doesn't use pillows so it isn't a feather allergy. The only alternative to figure it out was to get him tested. Hopefully it won't be abything too serious, and I am sorry, I love The Son but if it turns out he is allergic to cats and dogs.... The Son needs to go!!! I am not getting rid of my animals!!! ;D ;D

Ouch. Sorry to hear that he's got that kind of a condition. :( I've had different kinds of breakouts myself, but different conditions.

A couple of months ago, I received a friend request on Facebook from someone who hadn't contacted or talked to me in like a year.  No reason as to why, he just dropped out of my life.  I denied the request because of this and because I feel I have moved past the bullshyt he used to spout.  A few weeks after that friend request, he sent another.  I denied it.  A few weeks after that, he sent ANOTHER.  I denied it again and blocked him on Facebook.  On September 20th, he sent me an email saying he "missed me".  Yeah.  You all know I'm usually floating aboot on the internet AND he has my phone number, so obviously not missing me that much.  I said as much in an email back to him, along with the words DO NOT CONTACT ME EVER AGAIN IN ANY WAY.  I blocked his email after that.  Guess what I received on MySpace last night?  Go ahead, guess.  Give up?  A friend request.  From him.

Now this might seem like a minor thing, but it is rather damned irritating and I know it is his way of trying to get me back in his net again.  I do not want it.  I also looked up cyberstalking and harassment laws for this state, but what he's doing doesn't fall under those categories, so I guess it's all on me to handle this.  F*cking lame.

Oh yeah, if you've been on this board long enough, you probably know who I'm talking about.

Which particualr job do you want though?  It's no good just saying to your superviser that you want to work indoors.  You need to ask for a specific job and work out why you would be good at it.

Thanks Sasha. :) I even sat down with my mom this afternoon and talked about different options to pursue, jobwise. At this point I am willing to take any entry-level position, even if it means acquiring new skills.

Last Sunday was the start of it all. I got a text from our tenants in Texas, telling me that another storm came through and split an old ash tree in half, of which the largest part was hanging in my backyard. Great! So I called the contractors that I use and because the flooding had taken a toll in the surrounding area, he had to put me off until this yesterday. That was fine. He called yesterday to let me know that this tree was going to be a lot more work then the last one which came down (that one was actually hanging over the house so all they had to do was get up on the roof) so this one would cost a bit more. $200 later and the tree is all cut down and neatly piled in the front yard to be carted away on garbage day. That's fine.

Well, this past Saturday I got another text from our tenants which said and I quote: "the sink in the bathroom fell". That was it. I called to find out that apparently, for no reason at all, the caulking decided to let go, thus the sink dropped and crushed the elbow. Thankfully the sink itself didn't break, but when the husband went to get a new elbow, they don't make them in that size anymore. (Note: our house is 39 years old and that was probably the original elbow.  ::) And the sink didn't have balance poles, it was basically held up by the caulking and the elbow. ) So instead he bought a whole new pedestal sink with all the hoses and taps etc. One good thing, at least it only cost $150!!! So I asked how they wanted to reimbursed... here is the blessing. They said to just go ahead and take it off of next months rent. That totally works for me! oOo and I learned something I didn't know. Apparently the husband is a certified plumber!! How awesome is that??!!

Finally, my stupid, slower than mollasses laptop that I use to blog or be on here when I am in the bedroom, well it has decided to almost bite the dust. Last night it told me that the disk is about to fail. No time frame of course, but it is all good. It is an IBM ThinkPad from 2002, 64mb onboard RAM and a measley 20gb hard drive! I can't run anything but google chrome on it and even sometimes that doesn't want to cooperate! Alas, it appears that I will use it until it actually dies, then I will take it apart and sell it for parts. And I am not planning on buying one to replace it... my luck, when I do another freakin tree will fall or something else will mysteriously happen to the house! ;D

That's unfortunately the way it is with most self-absorbed people.
And you know, it wouldn't be so bad if he had of at least tried to stay in touch throughout the entire time, but he didn't. And to try and get back in by bombarding you is showing how little regard he actually has for you. It is sad you know, that a grown man has to resort to such tactics. I am truly sorry that he is putting you through this. You know of course if it was going on here, I would hit my beautiful little ban button for you! ;) 8)

Look on  the  bright side.  The problems with the house were taken care of with just a couple of phone calls.  No need for warrants, small claims, or Peoples Court.  ;D

Which particualr job do you want though?  It's no good just saying to your superviser that you want to work indoors.  You need to ask for a specific job and work out why you would be good at it.

Yes I would like to try my hands at stocking shelves,I did it once before when the store was very busy and there were no carts at that time.

I am really hating the job search.  I have been at it for months and just got a call after a very long dry spell.  it really racks your confidence, but if you do all you can, you have to just remember that and keep chuggging on, like the engine that could.  The engine that could and  would if it had a job.

I work union so I have a business agent who does all that stuff, I don't think I could survive if I had to go out on interviews with resumes and all that crap.  It can be emotionally crippling, and in this climate doubly so.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to post our lunch photos yet.  Not only do I have to get with Q again about exactly how to do it, but I have kicked down by this sinus infection.  I had to call in to work on Monday and only lasted 3 hrs yesterday.  I had no energy to even open the laptop case and get it out.  I am starting to feel better, so be ready Q!

Definitely! And the contractors for the trees take paypal so that works wonders as well!
Although court might happen... only because where the line of trees are, it isn't technically our property. 4 feet in from our property line is basically owned by the gas company because the gas main goes into the backyards through my lot. I am actually waiting on a call back from Atmos and The City, to see who I can remit this bill to. They wouldn't let us put up a privacy fence because of it, so I am going to try and get them to pay for the trees.

Ya, I doubt it will work out in my favor, but it doesn't hurt to try. ;)

Just came back from the dentist an hour ago and it seems that I have to go back for a second deep cleaning the 21st.Dr.Barak was telling me that I have slightly bad gums which he told me is hereditary and it runs in the genes.I told him I brush,floss and mouthwash like crazy and still I have healthy teeth but bad gums.You know it sucks when the dentist tells you that.  :(

Perhaps you can get the dentist to check your technique.  You might be brushing your teeth but if you aren't doing it quite right then you could be missing the gumline or something.

If your gums slightly bleed every time you brush then you are doing something wrong, I think.  Bleeding gums is one of the first signs of gum disease.  Perhaps you are brushing too much and damaging the surface of the gums?  I would definitely ask your dentists advice when you go on the 21st.

Yesterday was International Walk to School Day.  But James's school postponed it due to bad weather.  In the UK the idea was to walk from home to school but here the distances involved are a little greater for some children and there are often no pavements (sidewalks).  So we met at another nearby school (one for only 6th grade) and walked from there.

Then I met a friend in IHoP for pumpkin pancakes.  Just got back from that in time to go to my music lesson.

Elizabeth and I are planning to watch the House season premiere that we missed earlier this month.  Though that depends on whether Dai gets home in time to take James to soccer practice.

I got butterflies in my head again.  Was going to order some plants, but the shipping was outrageous.  Found another place where the shipping wasn't so bad, but it only had a couple of the plants I wanted.  Other plants were on e-bay as seeds, but I'd probably have to pay shipping on each one.  I think I'll order from Larner seeds and get seeds I want for three of the plants I want.  I'm trying to lean towards CA native plants if I can.  I think it will be more favorable then the Florda butterfly bush that's being sold.

Well Danoota, this second cleaning is for the other side of my mouth,What he will do is numb the other other side with novocaine,hopefully I won't dribble saliva or blood like yesterday.

No that's fine, it will help me take a look at what I've been doing and I can make ajustments for the better or know tif I'm just going too hard on myself.  A couple or few classes I took at the Society for Handicapped Children & Adults of Stanislaus County before I got real bad. The last one I took with my mom, I had to have all the instructions written out for me and I didn't always figure it out.  Now I'm trying to keep practicing from places off the internet, but being home with my mom schooling me, I'm kind of loosing interest.  Mind if I sign Paint It Black or something instead?  Music is my learning strength.

I'm in the ER because I have another MRSA/staph sore.  I am incredibly amused because some lady in a neck brace is getting mouthy with the nurses because it is taking forever.  I don't blame her, she's been here since one o'clock. :o

Anyways, she's getting major attitude with the nurse and it is really flippin' funny.

I did it!!!  I got the Chicago pictures posted on my Facebook account AND in the Say Cheese thread.  And I didn't even have to bug Q or Cat to do it (I got them in Photobucket, too).  The only thing is that I don't know how to re-size, so they are a little big.  Sorry about that.

Just came back from the dentist an hour ago and it seems that I have to go back for a second deep cleaning the 21st.Dr.Barak was telling me that I have slightly bad gums which he told me is hereditary and it runs in the genes.I told him I brush,floss and mouthwash like crazy and still I have healthy teeth but bad gums.You know it sucks when the dentist tells you that.  :(
If you definitely don't have gum disease, it could be your toothpaste! I used to have very sore gums all the time and it turns out it was my toothpaste that was causing it. There is an common ingredient in most toothpastes that can irritate some peoples gums, like how some people get skin irritations from certain detergents. On my dentists advice I switched to an Aloe Vera toothpaste from a health food store and have never had another problem since.

Well Gis Our Family uses Aim toothpaste Cinna-Mint with cavity protection plus once in a while we use Crest.I shouldn't have gum disease,maybe I brush too hard,could be the case. ???

Guess not, I don't remember how many teeth hes pulled.  I don't even know the cavities are there before the dintist finds them on x- rays.

I remember when my teeth were pulled in 1985 and then later I needed braces,I used to suck my thumb from 1974-1984.

My mom has told me in the past that I could  gargle with some hydrogen peroxide.  I don't know, but it defiantly helps get all that food out between your teeth.

I think you can get internet restraining orders.  Don't open them, or delete them.  Let him know that if he contacts you again you will report it and take steps.

Oh yeah, some of you know...we bought new cars. Yes, carS.  2009 Mitsubishi Lancer (I drive mostly) and 2009 Mitsubishi Galant.  Traded in Sara's 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe and I privately sold my 1996 GMC Sonoma.  I miss having a truck but I like the sportiness of the Lancer, and it gets about the same MPG as the Sonoma (my truck was a 4-cylinder).  The Galant gets about the same too (4-cylinder) and much better than the V6 Santa Fe that got about 20 MPG highway.  :P There's a pic on my Facebook from my phone and I'll post more pics as soon as we uploadz them from the digital camera. :)

I got rid of my unwanted toolbar last night.

Okay, my mom asks me if I'd like to go to Home Depot with her.  She gets some stuff inside while I look at the plants.  Anyway we're in the parking lot and there's this battle going on.  She's telling me to get such and such plant and it doesn't need any shade.  I need to mulch and put some kind of spray on my plants in order of them to survive.  I said " Okay, you wont listen to me, I just let you be right"  " No, don't let me be right".  I immediately get interrupted again after starting to talk.    I use to hear my dad argue with mom as a child with her interrupting and being right.  Had to get that out and remember she still does that.

I bought some lupine seeds.  These ones are perennials instead of annuals.  I even sewed some in a container,we don't get much frost if any.  We might though if it continues to be this cold.  I got way more seeds then I need though.

My stupid truck is acting up again.  I took it to Auto Zone and it said the injectors were acting up.  They are still under warranty so tomorrow it is back to the stupid shop. 

Sorry Dagny! Good thing they are still covered though. Instead you just have to spend the day getting it fixed. ;)

Press ctrl+alt+delete to restart" and every time it is just a loop. I knew it was inevitable, I just didn't think it would be so soon. Thankfully, I didn't have any files on it that are irreplaceable. ;)

I am not looking to replace it either. Even though the prices of laptops have come down considerably, it just isn't something that I am willing to go spend money on. My luck, I will do that and another tree will fall in Texas! Haha! I better knock on wood.

Other than that all is well up here in the cold north. Tomorrow the sun is actually supposed to come out, so I will keep my fingers crossed!

Thankfully, I didn't have any files on it that are irreplaceable.


Sorry about your laptop,You can always get Windows Vista for your laptop and thankfully for me,this isn't giving me any trouble just like the last one did.

On top of that, I had to go pee REALLY bad and being tossed around didn't help matters. We were late getting into Philly-just barely got our connecting flight and of course our luggage didn't. So, we had to borrow clothing from my SIL & FIL. I was so super irritated, tired (we got up at 5 a.m.) and really miserable when we landed. I NEEDED a drink. That first pina coloda hit the spot.  ;D  Two more at dinner-followed by a shot of flavored rum. I slept GREAT that night.

The next day we went to see the property-took mega photos. My biggest issue about it is that it is EXTREMELY HOT!!!! That is something that needs to be addressed. It is much bigger than I thought. That is a plus.

Later went to see a lawyer.  It was really strange to see "Dona" next to my maiden name (a name I haven't used in decades). I used to see "Don" next to Carlos' name-just not his GIVEN name.  ;) Right now, we are waiting for the report from the inspector (which we should get tomorrow). In the meanwhile, we went to Home Depot & Sears pricing things we will need. No, it is not ours yet. I'm still not sure about this but I know Carlos REALLY, REALLY wants this.

Today is the first day we don't have something going-so we may decide to do a little more pricing of "stuff" (a/c, stove, refridge, etc. etc.)

So is ours. We've been using it as our main computer since mid-2007 (when the old pc crashed), but we'd originally gotten it in 2003 for my dad to use while on the go. However, the extra use that it has gotten, has caused it to slow; we hope it holds up for a while too. We've been trying to empty out the hard drive and clear the unnecessary files (especially pictures, since they take up a lot of space; we've stored those to flash-disk or CD). That has helped somewhat.

Cat, sorry you had such a terrible flight, but glad you got a nice surprise with the size of the house.  Hope it all works out for you and Carlos.

Tam, sorry to hear about the laptop.  I feel your pain, Girl, being without mine for a month (and no desktop for backup).

Well, it is Ferris' homecoming.  They lost BIG! again

Hanging out til it is time to get ready for the Alumni dance.  Wish I knew who was coming.  Most of my friends are going to the BGC (Black Greek Council) parties.  Hopefully the one I'm going to won't be as lame as last year because M has the car.  I got the apt cleaned so I can go have fun with a clear conscience.  Just hope they play some decent music.  I'm not dressing up too much this year--for one thing I don't have anything that doesn't look business and for another, it is damn cold.  Last time I dressed up, it was a little too "up" and I was uncomfortable and felt overdressed.

Sounds just like what our old PC did in June 2007. It kept failing to boot, going through an endless loop. Finally we had to turn it off the hard way, at the risk of corrupting whatever else was on it.

I'm glad you didn't have any irreplaceable files on it; on ours we had some important files (which I regret not backing up; now I store everything on my flash disk). But that was a couple years ago.

Tired of ridiculous weather... We had snow today :P  October 10th and it snowed.  Youngest had princess duties to perform.  So we bundled her up so she could be in a parade (No worries on hair, crown, dress, and such...).  She wore fleece lined jeans, her cowgirl boots, her new Columbia, mittens, and a hat) and she sat on Straw bales in the back of my truck. No glitz and glamour for a fair princess today - LOL  Eldest daughter was happy, she got to throw candy to the crowd (and surprisingly there were a lot of kids out waiting for the candy). 


Making jambalaya for supper - should warm us from the inside out - and hubby made pumpkin pie bars.  Finally found pumpkin today, in our little tiny town grocery store.  I did not even look at the price I just bought it.  I have been wanting pumpkin stuff with a passion...

It was cold, but nothing that a cup of hot cocoa couldn't solve.  The girls played outside while it snowed today.
