It's OFFICIALLY, the start of summer here, as of today (December 1) . Mid 70's, Fahrenheit wise ...  a so-so start. Expect it to get a LOT hotter .. but the weather's been all over the place, last month or so.

It will be December here soon...my son has decided to poop in celebration.

...ok, now it's December for me. I tried to hang up some Christmas lights outside but my ladder wasn't tall enough. I'm gonna borrow my bro-in-laws tomorrow. pretty much stayed in & watched 2 movies with Diane & Julie. that was nice. I'm off work tomorrow, going to a Dr.  appoinment to get a CPAP machine since I was recently diagnosed with a mild form of sleep apnea. usually I'm fine if I sleep on my side. here's what the device is and what is for:

(Continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP) uses a machine to help a person who has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) breathe more easily during sleep. A CPAP machine increases air pressure in your throat so that your airway does not collapse when you breathe in. When you use CPAP, your bed partner may sleep better, too.

You use CPAP at home every night while you sleep. The CPAP machine will have one of the following:

A mask that covers your nose and mouth
A mask that covers your nose only-called nasal continuous positive airway pressure, or NCPAP (this type of mask is most common)
Prongs that fit into your nose) 


about 6 weeks ago, I spent the night at a sleep center to have a sleep study done, and the study the first half of night was with no sleep aid, the second half, I was hooked up with a CPAP machine and the results were that my sleep was deeper and less episodes of waking during sleep. anyways, it sucks to struggle to breath at night (mainly when I sleep on my back)  and it's been an ongoing condition for years, and now we know what it is and hopefully this will help.

Glad to hear the machine works for you Mike. I may have to look into one of those myself...but they are so expensive!  What happens if it CRAPs itself?

Just remember you can not make the marriage work alone!!!!  It takes two and it is a lot of "work" by both parties involved. 

If someone wants to be confrontational, they can be confrontational about anything and it does not matter the subject, there is nothing the other person can do right. So those issues have to be worked through, and I believe (and it was mentioned by another poster) that marriage counseling may be your best bet!  Having the non involved third party two look at both sides and find out where the problems are and where the compromises will need to be made.

Maybe it is just the stress of having to move and get resettled, but I would still take Alan's suggestion and go see a marriage couselor.  BOTH of you, not just yourself.  As was pointed out by 2kidsami, there are two of you in this marriage and he needs to make the effort as well.  If he doesn't want to or balks at it or says it's stupid or whatever, then go by yourself and get the help so that you can decide what to do and where this marriage is going.

As for me, it is being worked on that we might (MIGHT) go back to California in a few weeks.  We'd be driving (the manic dog wouldn't take to flying and our families usually send us home with a bunch of crap), so it would take us a few days since we'd have to take the more southern route.  This isn't really a social visit, but I feel the need to go and see my grandmother and just......be there for my mom.  You don't know how hard it is to hear the stress in her voice and then hear how relieved she sounded when I said it was a possibility to come out there. :-\\

I'm also sort of angry with some of my family members for the way they are acting.  Eighteen years ago, the same thing happened when my grandfather was ill and dying.  I was young then and really had no voice to be heard.  That has changed this time around, and I'm not going to have all these f*cking people fighting over stupid crap.

I'm so sorry about the news.  Please accept my thoughts and prayers as your sister goes through this.  I work with 3 (now 2) breast cancer survivors which obviously doesn't make me any kind of expert, but if there is anything I can find out for you, please let me know.

Patty, I'm sending my very best wishes to you in your stressed out state.  I hope you find a way to get through this.  I have to go along with those who recommend marriage counseling---preferably with your husband, but go alone if you must.  As was already mentioned, the counselor might be able to help you decide on your options and which one works best for you.  I hope, however, that your husband realizes the seriousness of the situation and agrees to go with you---and then not only goes, but actually contributes.  You can PM me anytime if you want to talk.  *hugs*

Today was a typically crazy Monday.  Plus we aren't getting the new scanner until tomorrow---imagine how THAT went over with a bunch of angry faculty.  I feel bad because Robin will be by herself tomorrow when it arrives and will have to do all the scanning and phones.  I am out of the office Tues-Thurs administering tests across town (7:30a-5:30p each day).  Not looking forward to what I'm going to come back to on Friday, then test again on Saturday, 7:30 til whenever.  Hopefully, the snow will stop so we can get our Christmas stuff out of the storage unit and get the apt decorated.

thanks Peter, I picked it up today, jiminy christmas! it's a $800 device  :o  but my insurance covered it, amen to that  :)  I attended a 90 minute training class on it this morning. the technician was really nice and said she uses one herself.

I have to cuss.  my whole f*cking body hurts dang it!  all I did was climb a 12 ft. ladder about 40 times and I strung up our Christmas lights on the outside of our house, 3 sets connected totalling 60 ft and when I was done, to my horror, I had put them up backwards, http://bestsmileys.com/surprised/4.gif    I had to take them all down and redo the whole thing. I just had an Alleve cocktail. my back is so tight. crikey, I'm only 52. I gotta get myself into better shape this winter.

;D  thanks, powerful drugs are the answer.  that is one of the funniest Christmas movies of all time. I need to watch that movie soon. Clark & cousin Eddie are too funny. I swear I felt the ladder tilt and shake a couple times and I thought, I really should have somebody holding it steady.  I did try to come up with something so I would not have to redo it, but sadly I needed to do it right so I bit the bullet and now I need more pain relievers.

Thanks all for the support in my earlier comment.  One lesson learned by moi... Never have an argument with the spouse and then go online and post.  ;D  ;)  All is better, it is the stress of moving and settling in.  Relationship is solid, no bad arguments today.

Badfingerfan:  I can empathize, It seems like I'm on a daily ibuprophen or Aleve cocktail.  I'm 39, and it seems (especially at night) and now that I live somewhere that has LOTS of stairs, those medicines become all the more important to me.  Hope you feel better soon, my friend.

Jess:  Ah...I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma (and the bickering going on in the family.)  I can only hope that things settle down and people act their age.

Just received an e-mail from James's teacher.  He's getting into trouble in class for reading instead of doing his work.  I like the fact that he loves reading, it's a shame to take books off him but if he's actively ignoring the teachers and school work then we need to do something.

Well, let me tell you, it doesn't get any better.  And that putting up the lights backwards....mm hmm,  all part of the package.  Exercise used to be an option, now it is a life saving treatment.  ::)

My sympathes go out to you Jess.My Grandmother is 91 and she now resides in an assisted living home with lots of support,She just came from Florida on plane,She was living in Florida since 1979 till my Grandfather passed on in 1989 but after that my Uncle(s) took care of her because she has been suffering from Alzymer's but now she's in good spirits.

Mike, my dad has had a machine for over a year now.  Didn't take long to get used to it and luckily the VA covers maintenance, etc. (he got it from them).  Micah had to have a sleep study to see if she needed a machine, but because she stopped breathing less than 30 times (I think that was the magic number), they say she doesn't need it.  She didn't care for the sleep study for a number of reasons--the camera trained on her, the tubes, the wires and most of all, she said the bed was more comfortable than anything she had ever slept on so of course she slept better.  ::)  I myself could have done without the whole having to pick her up at 5 a.m.  I hope your back feels better soon!  You know what they say..."Gettin old ain't for sissies"  ;) (well, maybe not everyone says that, but a famous actress did once upon a time)

I'm bored out of my mind (yes, I have work to do but it seems like that is all I ever do from 8 a.m. til I go to bed).  I am at the Holiday Inn administering a 3 hr 45 min exam.  I will do it again this afternoon, 2 times tomorrow and 2 times on Thursday.  The good news is that if I could get myself focused (I have started a survey), I might get enough done that I won't have to work over the weekend (I'm testing Sat 7:30 to whenever) and can work on the apt (cleaning, decorating).  Only a little over an hour and a half left....I'm going to try and finish the survey (and maybe start another). Wish me luck as I feel completely unmotivated.  ::)

Just got back from the dentist and after the cleaning they did a flouride treatment in which they put really awful gunk on my teeth and I waited about 1 minute for it to dry then I'm not supposed to eat or drink for a half hour.But then they charged me for the treatment because my Medicaid/care doesn't cover it so I'm suposed to dish out $35.Boy,everybody wants to milk you for money whether it's the doctor,dentist or the podiatrist. ::)

thanks Amy. I have to have my machine re-calibrated. it really works good opening my nasal breathing passages, but exhaling is difficult because the incoming air pressure is a bit too strong. I just used a breath right nose strip. all 3 of us use those at times. as for my back, omg, it's killin' me but at least the Xmax lights are up  ;D

Aleve is definitely not enough. I haven't hurt my back in many years, been playing softball fine, but I have had at least 3-4 back injuries in the 80's 90's, bad enough to go out on disability, but this one is minor, just need a couple days to let it rest. now I wish I had my hot tub cleaned and ready. darn!

No no, don't feel like that.  My fault for not making it clearer.  I was going to write a bit more about it, but I didn't because I felt like I was bringing down everyone's holiday spirit.

To elaborate a bit further, her organs are failing and she would be suffering if they didn't have her sedated.  I'm not sure why they're waiting until Thursday, but I guess they just need to get all the paperwork together or something.

Funny that you mention that.  It is/has been rather...um... interesting living near hubby's family.  His uncle lives next door (and is renting us this house - still no official paperwork, so maybe we won't be renting to own afterall...  :-\\ ).  We try to look in on him every day or couple days.  He has a newish Pit Bull puppy (who is HUGE) (but he seems to like me and I'm not really a dog person) so I'm hoping he doesn't turn mean.  (The dog or the uncle  ;) )

Hubby's mom lives a block up the street and it's hit or miss whether they get along or not.  Monday at 5:30 a.m. she called and talked to my hubby for 3 1/2 hours (using up the alloted minutes for his phone this month but  :-X ) 

She wants someone from the family (namely my hubby, me, or hubby's cousin) to dress in a Santa costume to go through the neighborhood, ringing a bell and going up to random houses and visiting the children (and promising to come back (in theory) on Christmas Eve).  She doesn't want to hand out any little cheap gifts either.  Oh and she wants to take the Pit Bull, dress it up in an elf costume and take it around too.  She has a really good memory of when this was done for her (minus the pit bull dog I presume) as a child (in the 50s.)  Hubby and I both have repeatedly told her that while it's a sweet idea (her heart is in the right place), times have changed too drastically to do that anymore.  People are more private nowadays and also suspicious too.  Not to mention the whole dog thing which is in a book by itself.  ;D

Um yeah you're right... the times have changed... people will be suspicious of a door to door santa.  We live in a pedophilic nation now... plus take it from someone who had the second most unpopular breed on the planet... no matter what the dogs disposition is people will be afraid of the dog simply because its a pit bull... Carly was the sweetest dog on the planet with not one mean bone in her body. I used to joke that she'd let a burglar in the house just so long as he stopped and petted her first.  ;D  But people were terrified of her when I walked her in the park or on the street... man she just wanted love from everyone she saw and people were always trying to get way out of her way.  :-\\

Wait....What?  She lives a block up the street, but talked on the phone for 3 1/2 hours.  Next time, if he can't find a way to get her off the phone, tell him to put her on speaker, keep talking while he throws on some sweats and walks over.  This doesn't seem like it is going to be a good situation.  She has already stepped in and taken control in a very warped way.  If hubby finds it hard to say no to  a 3 1/2  hour telephone conversation with a mom just up the street he isn't going to be able to say no to much of anything else.

Busy day.  Eye exam, bank, see mom in nursing home, take boys bowling then for pizza, try to hit the gym(that may not happen).  When did I become a responsible adult?  ???    'Cause I don't like it.

She'll only need to stay in the hospital one night, so she'll be home Friday.

That caused me a problem when I was changing my e-mail address.  You need to re-enter your original password to reset things like that.

I get around these problems by using a choice of four different passwords.  It doesn't take long to work out which one I used.

It is dogs that attack, not breeds (and most of the time it is the BREEDERS AND OWNERs fault); yes some individual dogs will have a psychotic incidence, but very few.  My family has had several pits between all of us, and none have ever attacked, but we do background checks on breeders we get them from....  We want a stable, healthy dog, and with over/irresponsible breeding done now a days by anyone, that can be hard to find.  The most any of our pits "attacked" was my dad's brand new "fake" leather recliner (and that was about the death of the dog)...  I also enjoy Rotts, Pinschers, Shepherds and Mastiffs.... 

Dogs that I do not enjoy (I was bit by more of these than any other breed, my 3 years at the vet clinic) LABS, CHIHUAHUAS, PUGS, SHARPEI's, and NO 1 on my dogs I will never own because they bite COCKER SPANIELS; but I will say that all of these dogs had poor owner's (watch out he may bite, he bites me when I do that - NO DOG SHOULD EVER BITE IT's - That only means the dog believes it own's the person and not vice versa)  That is all I will say on the subject, I will step off my soapbox now - Sorry

Anyway...my mom is going in for surgery tomorrow. In February 2004, she'd had her thyroid surgically removed...now there's something in that area that looks cancerous. So to make a long story short, she's gonna have that cancerous thingy removed tomorrow, so the rest of my family is praying that everything goes well. She'll only need to stay in the hospital one night, so she'll be home Friday.

I started as a stocker, then I became a department head I was in charge of the seasonal section  ::) then head cashier... and at some point I was in charge of the graveyard crew. 

they used to lock us in the store during the graveyard shift (that's when I learned the store was haunted)  and on our lunch breaks we would ride bikes through the store... or get out the remote control cars from the display cases and play with them Once we all put on roller skates and skated for an hour then put them back in the box... I was a bad manager  ;D  and once we played laser tag.

The thing about your hubby losing weight and you gaining it reminded me of a Kelly Monteith sketch from years ago.  He reckoned people just swapped weight around.  Maybe your kitten/cat gained the other half pound?  :)

Anyway, the secret is to treat each day as the start of a new year and make a resolution that today will be better.

this is the 3rd day I've been absent from work with my back. not to whine and cry, but it friggin hurts, but I can tell it's slowly getting better. I'm roasting a turkey in the oven and it's making the house smell good. with my bad back, it wasn't easy lifting up that bird. 
I saw the news about AT&T announcing the slashing of 12,000 jobs. hopefully I'm safe where I am & with what I do & the 25 years of seniority I have. the company has about 300,000 employees, so 12k across U.S. not sure how many in Calif will be included in that number.

I do work the technical side, but I'm an inside testing tech, and I work with Verizon techs all the time. they buy a lot of our T1 circuits and sometimes they need me to help them test before they accept it from us.  so I could get a job with Verizon, rent a room from you, and send paycheck back home to Lady Di  ;D

It's been torture the last 3 days, but I slept better last nigt. maybe 5-6 hours, compared to 2 hours per night Mon & Tues.  I think I'll go back to work on Tuesday. by then I should be ready to sit at my desk all day.  with the economy  struggling right now, & people losing jobs or not able to find work, it is a bit scary, but I have a good feeling that I'll be keeping my job, but I'm still gonna be praying as i always do  8)

thank goodness, my little girl suffered this fall but is on the road to health and happiness again.

nope, there is no conclusive diagnosis yet. blood tests were done, she had an endoscopy, we still may have a CatScan done if it doesn't just go away on it's own. it seems to be a mystery illness and after talking to friends, they claim to know people that have had the same thing for months and it just went away on it's own. I don't like guesswork from the doctors when it comes to sickness/illness, but they don't know. they all seem to think it's more anxiety related, but I'm not sold on that idea completely, especially being somewhat personally experienced in that area.  but the good news is that she's starting to feel and sleep better and is getting her life back which was put on hold during the tough part of this. hopefully the worst is over.  thanks for asking karen.

At the time I posted this, I was wrong...my mom was still in surgery. I'd gotten a call from my dad @ 4:30 (Pacific time) and he said that the operation was still going on...and it was scheduled to be over with by 6pm. I wasn't sure how long the operation was supposed to take.


Also...this evening I did something for the first time ever: drive at night, by myself!


And when I got home (just after 6), I called my dad on his cell phone again and he said that everything went just fine with the surgery, and that my mom was in the recovery room with a nurse. So that's good to know.

So tomorrow afternoon, I believe, my mother will have a chance to come home.

In fact, I think she is definitely going to come home some time tomorrow.

When she'd had her earlier operation, almost five years ago, she had to stay in the hospital for four days until finally being discharged. That ain't gonna happen this time, thank goodness.

oh by the way.  Julie's prolonged nausea has improved, she's slowly starting to feel like she can function again and get back into her normal life. thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. she's going back to her temp job for winter break and then she's registered for classes next semester at SJSU. she's not through the woods yet, but I can tell the Emerald City is just up ahead for her.
thank goodness, my little girl suffered this fall but is on the road to health and happiness again.

So to your back........What has the doctor said? have you strained it?, pulled a muscle?, trapped a nerve?  As someone who has suffered chronic back pain you truely have my sympathies.
I must do a on soap box moment and tell you to get it checked out and to look after it properly! At the age of 25 I was told I had the back of someone in their 70's and if i didn't do something I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 50. So I am quite evangelical about telling people to take care of their backs!
Luckily I didn't need surgery and via Osteopathy, Physio and now the Alexander Technique the back is in good shape. 8) just wish the rest of me was.  ;D
Anyway best advise is to stay gently mobile and yeah lifting poultry is prbably not to be recommended!

this is the 3rd day I've been absent from work with my back. not to whine and cry, but it friggin hurts, but I can tell it's slowly getting better. I'm roasting a turkey in the oven and it's making the house smell good. with my bad back, it wasn't easy lifting up that bird. 
I saw the news about AT&T announcing the slashing of 12,000 jobs. hopefully I'm safe where I am & with what I do & the 25 years of seniority I have. the company has about 300,000 employees, so 12k across U.S. not sure how many in Calif will be included in that number.


I know having a bad back sucks, I was put on Social Security Disability because of my back.Hopefully you will be well soon and back to work
With today's economy nobody can afford to lose their job.
At the time I posted this, I was wrong...my mom was still in surgery. I'd gotten a call from my dad @ 4:30 (Pacific time) and he said that the operation was still going on...and it was scheduled to be over with by 6pm. I wasn't sure how long the operation was supposed to take.


Also...this evening I did something for the first time ever: drive at night, by myself!


And when I got home (just after 6), I called my dad on his cell phone again and he said that everything went just fine with the surgery, and that my mom was in the recovery room with a nurse. So that's good to know.

So tomorrow afternoon, I believe, my mother will have a chance to come home.

Thank you all.  The numbness is still here, but I'm managing.  She did go as peacefully as could be expected, and I'm forever grateful to my friend (whom I haven't talked to in like 3 years) for calling me today and distracting me for 2+ hours so I wouldn't break down in front of the boy child that badly.

It took me about a week before I could get really comfortable.  Let me tell you though, with doctors it is pills and see you later.  Finallly, after being hounded by some of the guys I work with, getting sick of the recurring pain, not being able to walk very far without the lower back stiffening up, and having a hard time getting in and out of the car, I saw a chiropractor.  I was a bit sceptical, but my life changed with the first visit.  I went a couple of time a week for a month, now I go once a month for a "tune up" .  Life is grand again.  ;)

Same here with the Alexander Technique, it has been life changing. I go every six weeks now just to keep an eye on things.

I am going to the bank, picking up the child and we are going to the Festival of Trees.  It is a charity festival where people decorate trees and auction them off.  All the proceeds go the Primary Children's Hospital to help those who can't pay for care.  I can't afford to buy a tree, but will donate by paying the entrance fee.  I love seeing all the trees.

Fingers crossed that's the end of the redundancies at his place.

Dai works at a joint venture with a couple of other companies.  He said that yesterday the managers came round and just handed people working for one of the other companies a pink slip to say they'd been made redundant.  Eight went in his area.  The situation isn't much better at the UK company either.  :-\\

the world is against me!  I've phoned three potential babysitters and none of them are at home.  I'm getting a bit desperate because I told Dai a couple of weeks ago I'd sorted something! eek

2nd night in a row that I've slept soundly (of course, double dosage of xanax helps)  but my back is slowly getting betterwhere I am not in excruciating pain all the time.

thanks Gis, people that have had back problems can easily relate to the torment. I have not gone to see the doctor. I've hurt it several times in the past and it feels pretty much like one of those previous injuries, which I believe were pulled muscle/strain. I remember the doc telling me years ago I had probably torn only a couple muscle fibers and I did the therapy several times and it helped. I decided to wait and it's healing up/mending on its own as the body is supposed to do. I'm gonna look into that Alexander technique thing. I've been very immobile thes past 4 days but I had to cook that turkey  ::)

thanks ninny. so you know as anyone with back injuries can attest, it's utter torture!  I've been out on disability and workmns comp at least 3-4 times in my 25 year career with present employer, the longest time out was 3 months, but I expect to go back next Tuesday as it is feeling better.

thanks Philip, and it is my lower back which I've hurt several times before, but it's been almost ten years since my last injury.  as for work, I'm in the union and by contract they couldn't release me for that, but they will be laying off people soon and hopefully my team/group is still needed. we have been very busy and our group provides service specifically to the wireless sector which is the growing part of the company.

being there, you know full well the agony one goes thru, especially during the initial time, which I'm now past. I also am aware the doctors prescribe pills and i don't want any of that. the chiropractor sounds like something I'd like to check out.
