We are in the market for a new a/c. Carlos' sister told us that Home Depot sells portable a/cs. Ok. Sounds good. We can use it in here during the day and then bring it down into the bedroom at night. However, the idea of lugging this thing up and down the stairs didn't quite appeal to us as we checked out the weight-a few were over 80 lbs and I think the lightest was 50 lbs. I decided to look into window units. The ones I looked at weighed less than 50 lbs. I don't understand why they would call something "portable" when it seems very heavy to move.


So, what are some of the things that make you go, "Huh?"

With a/c units, portable means "not permanently installed". Window units are not really portable - unless it's a very small unit w/o exterior bracing, it would be a pain to move, and you'd still have to remove/install the seals with every move (that would get old quickly).

"Portable" ones require seperate venting of the hot air from the room and probably emptying a water pan - you'd have to disconnect/reconnect the exhaust hose and empty the water tray every time you move it (again, a pita). Maybe a bigger window unit upstairs with a fan aiming the cold air toward the bedroom? Or two cheaper window units?

Regardless of your choice, don't look at the country of origin of whatever cooling system you get.
