I gotta go with Peter, even though he's dopey, big and fat, he gets a heck of a lot of tail  8)   and he's got the funniest friends. and the way he treats his kids, he's kind of a a cross between Al Bundy & Homer Simpson

Definitely Homer Simpson. Some of his dumbest moments include forgetting to pick up Bart from soccer practice in 'Brother From the Same Planet' and writing the wrong name on a piece of cardboard at the airport in another episode, although i can't remember which one it was.

Tough call.  In the end, I had to go with Homer.

Homer's reaction is "D'oh!" -- he realizes he's done something stupid, and that's all there is to it.  Peter's reaction to failure is to deny that a mistake was ever made, to blame it on some non-sequitur, and to redouble his efforts.

In one sense, that makes him dumber than Homer, but Peter's schemes have an internal logical consistency (however poorly-founded their premises).  Homer is merely stupid.  Peter's delusions, manias, and obsessions qualify him as nuts, but his mind (and I use the term loosely) is the more complex of the two.

Homer would play his favorite record a few times, and then go down to Moe's and cry in his beer over its mysterious disappearance.  Jesus would not be there, but the episode would begin.  Peter Griffin would hear a song, acquire the record, play it incessantly, ask his wife about the lyrics while in bed, and upon discovering a shocking lack of awareness in the general population about a certain ornithological phenomenon, he would withdraw his family's savings to air public service announcements to inform the public.  Then he would meet Jesus, and only then would the episode's central plot begin.

Peter Griffin is a bit more believable and entertaining.  He probably also has a higher IQ than Homer.
