Being American (Like Alistair Cooke) or Irish (like Bob Geldof) there were knighted for whatever they had done, but for not being British the Sir is silent in front of them.

Being American (Like Alistair Cooke) or Irish (like Bob Geldof) there were knighted for whatever they had done, but for not being British the Sir is silent in front of them.
Although when I've gone shopping .... particularly in the very respectful US of A .... those wonderful people, who don't have knighthoods ... have said .... 'How can I help you SIR' ? Given that I'm used to 'Mr' .... (at best) ..... this elevation to de facto 'knighthood' status is quite appreciated ..... ;D
