According to this site http://www.americanapparel.net/presscenter/dailyupdate/dailyUp.asp?d=30&t=955 It's the 70th anniversary of the nylon stocking being introduced to the public by DuPont on February 16, 1938.

Wasn't there a punk group called "The Nylons"?
They were an accapella group from Canada that only used percussion. They had two popular hits in the USA with remakes of 'Happy Together' and 'Kiss Him Goodbye', the latter which went into the US Top 40 in 1987 :)
