So, having read about it .. I went in as a first timer (Wednesday, 27 February).


I think I managed to get to 21 correct answers in a row before getting one wrong ! I still had a rating of '44' after the 22nd .... and had a not too shabby level of 45 by the 1620th grain ... (and swear, I didn't cheat). 43 by 3000, but probably tired decisions by then ? Gave it away then !

There was an entirely different program to the one you have in mind .... (yours .... Carol Voorderman ? or some such name ... and the now deceased Richard .... (somebody ... whose name I've forgotten) ... always wore very loud ties, be-spectacled, nice enough guy ....

Or is that 'Blockbuster' ... ? Maybe I'm mixed up ?

Anyhow ..... 'Countdown' in Australia .... that was like the local equivalent of 'Top of the Pops' .....

It ran for a number of years .... early 70's (?) to approx '87.  Many British icons performed live on it (live recordings) and talked at length with the local host  ... 'Molly Meldrum'. Sometimes, these guests would more or less present the show ... / introduce/ discuss the next video/act ....

Such guests were ... Billy Idol, Madness, Mental as Anything, John Paul Young, well .... a whole host of famous names who currently escape me ...    :-[

Ironically .... just a few months to a year earlier .... there'd been a song on the show .... by Europe .... called 'The final  countdown'.

I also didn't know exactly where to turn the $$ in.  One day, I noticed my sister going through the $$. Yes, my sister stole some of the $$. (She was probably getting me back for stealing a 1909 wheatback penny from her when I was about 6 because I wanted candy and I figured she wouldn't miss a penny or two.) And seeing her do that, I figured, "what the hell" and I kept the rest.  :-[ :-[ :-[
