Subject: The Smell Test

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 02/21/08 at 12:20 am

Ever hear guys say, "I don't believe that, doesn't pass the smell test," or "Can't trust him, he doesn't pass the smell test."  I've heard that since I can remember, but it just now occurs to me, I don't know what the smell test is.  Anybody know?  Where do you go to take it?  Who proctors it?  Is it multiple choice?  Fill in the blanks? Essay?  Do you need number 2 pencils?  Do I really want an answer here?
:D

Hahaa....sometimes it is probably better not knowing about a particular "smell test"...I don't think I would want to be around a particular person that didn't pass that test. :D ;)

Well, it's a metaphor.  The original smell test was just the habit of checking for food spoilage.

Over the past few million years, we've evolved very good mechanisms to deter us from eating spoiled food, and one of them is the ability to detect (and be repulsed by) the chemicals given off by spoilage in relatively low concentrations.  You know that milk that's 3-4 days past its best-before date?  You sniff the mouth of the milk carton before pouring it all over your cereal.  And that steak you forgot about for a day or two and now it's a little grey on the outside?  Well, oxidation (breakdown of chemicals in the meat due to exposure to air) isn't the same as spoilage (that is, bacterial decay), so you unwrap the steak and give it a whiff -- if it still smells like steak, it's still perfectly good to eat.  Believe me, you'll know when an item of food fails the smell test.

Not always: a salad I ate tonight had one very rotten mini-tomato in it. It didn't smell, but as soon as I bit into it I knew I was going to gag. Conclusion: mini-tomatoes should be genetically engineered more so that when they spoil they smell bad too.

"It doesn't pass the smell test" has given way to "This is setting off my bulls*** detector"!

I've heard the smell test phrase - but I use a different one:

I trust (name) as far as I can throw them

;D

Yeah, totally -- BS detection is what the phrase means in colloquial speech -- it's an outgrowth of the idea that all things should be closely inspected for hints of foulness.

BTW, your tomato reminds me of an old joke:

Q: What's worse than finding a worm in your apple?
A: Finding half a worm!

I was once told by someone I didn't pass the smell test after I'd just come out of the washroom.  So I looked at him and jokingly said "What are you doing smelling me coming out of the bathroom?  Do you have like a poop fetish or something" lol
