Lottery

Subject: Re: Winning the Lottery

Written By: Gis on 01/15/08 at 12:55 am

I think we need to establish a figure here. Is it less than a million or over a million.

My first and formost act would be to pay off my debts and buy a house so I could tell my tightwad greedy landlords where they can stuff their extortionate rent. I would have to see my family right to, pay off mortgagaes, debts etc and my good friends would come into that too of course.

I would like to travel to some of the places I've always wanted to and if the win was big enough donate big chunks of money to various places.

If I won $100 Million, I'd be set for life.  Buy a big house and just relax all day.  But just cause I can, I'd take a million dollars, go downtown and just throw it into the street.  Why?  Because I can.  What's $1 Million when I have $99 Million ;D

If I won the lottery...that would take care of SO many of my problems. To tell you the truth...over half of my worries are due to financial problems...the other half are due to stupid people. :D

Anyway...first of all, I would pay off debts to everyone that I owed money to (those creditors wouldn't know what hit them...ME actually calling THEM for once and/or answering my phone for once  ;D).

Then, after paying off the debts (and sighing a HUGE sigh of relief) I would make sure that everyone close to me was set for the rest of their lives.

I would then go back to college (yes, even though I would have all the money that I needed..a degree is so very important to me)...to the college of my choice (this will be cash, please ;))...and pursue my dreams in life, and make sure that Vaughn's college (or any future children of mine) would already be taken care of.

I would live life to the fullest, doing things that I never could do (having not that much funds)...travel, make some neat purchases, donate money, help others, fulfill my dreams...just be happy.

I would make sure that I (and the rest of my family) would be very comfortable for the rest of our lives.

Now all I have to do.....is start playing the lotto!! Wish me luck! :D

Even if it were about 10,000 dollars...

I'd quit my job.
I'd move to a nicer house.
I'd take time to organise and get a small business off the ground.

More money?  The same. I don't want much.

Either sum would be greatly appreciated right now. I'd pay off my in-laws, see if there was anything that could be done medically for my dad, go back to school, and just chill.

$5 million - pay off my debts, buy a decent house and car, possibly keep my job (for the benefits) or work part-time doing something I enjoy like DJing at a club.

$100 million - pay off my debts, buy a REALLY nice house and a couple of vehicles, set up all my nieces and nephews for college, do some nice things for family and friends, travel and spend more time on music.

In both cases I'd invest a good portion of the money to maintain the quality of life I'd want to have.  In the latter I'd probably change my phone number.  :D  ;D

Where are we having this little shindig??? and if its not in the continental us can you get me fear of flying classes cuz otherwise I can't go... I was on a plane that plunged several hundred feet (not turbulance) during a severe storm and I have had a difficult time flying since.....if you are kind and have it in the continental us then it'll be just gas for me...which, when you think about it, might cost as much as airfare

No kidding.... the first thing I would do is sign privacy paperwork so no one knows I'd won...

I think about this all the time. I don't how the Mega Millions works but the California Lotto gives winners a choice of cash payout or 20 annual payments.... I hope to live 20 years (and beyond that)...but I have no guarantees and no heirs so I'd take the payout.  I always take the original figure and divide it by half because I estimate 50% in taxes (if it's less then I get more money O0 )

anything under 5 million (est. 2.5)  in Santa Barbara is just enough to buy:
~a condo or small house for myself (I saw a nice house for 895,00 -  condos run about 500K so most likely I'd do that.)
~a modest place in CA for my parents.  I have to get them out of AZ cuz I hate that drive.
~I'd take Carly to that ophthalmologist in Camarillo that I cannot afford (although it might be too late anyway- at least I'd want to try).
~I'd pay my bills,
~my parents bills
~Get a new car
~get a small apartment in LA... a place to stay when I go to all my events.
After doing all this there'd be little or no money left so I'd have to keep my job.

20+ million (est 10+)
~I would do all of the above but I would definately buy the house for 895,000 I house hunt a lot the house next door to me is 1.5 million. Its nice and the move would be easy but actually like the 895,000 house better I hope it stays on the market  ;)
~My parents house and my second residence in LA would be bigger.
~The new car would be more upscale...or I'd buy two... one for Carly and one for me when I don't have Carly with me...
~help out my friends
~Charity...(there'd be charitable contributions at any amount but the generosity grows with the jackpot.

100+ million (est 50)
all of the above and I would produce my own tv movies
and produce some friends projects.

the outrageous 300+ million (est 150)
I'd start my own production company
Hire myself as a Production assistant
Hire a friend as the company figure head
then pull the strings from the bottom w/o anyone knowing that the lowly PA was actually in charge  ;D

AH THE P 8) WER!!!!

Probably Las Vegas, one of the big Hotel/Casinos. For those not wanting to fly, (I don't care to fly myself but will as needed)  there would be custom party buses to pick people up and drive them to the event.

;D Same here.

With either amount, I would pay set aside half for taxes then pay off my bills and my mom and sisters mortgages.  Then I would set up a college fund for my daughter.  I would give some to my church, they support some really good charities.  I would invest most of the rest with a part of it going for one kick ass vacation.  I would probably keep working just because I would get bored if I didn't.  It would be nice to work just for the heck of it as opposed to having to work.

Using a 4% drawdown rate, that translates into taking your net worth after you the lottery (and pay the taxes) and divide it by 25.  That's how much you have to live on for the next 30 years.

Got $1M in the bank?  You can safely invest it in low-risk (T-bills, TIPS, T-bonds, maybe 25% in an index fund) investments, draw $40K/year out of it and still expect ("have 95% probability") of having something left after 30 years.

So:
$1M - keep my job, retire earlier than I would otherwise have retired and live comfortably.
$2M - buy a house and a couple of nice cars, retire tomorrow and live comfortably.
$10M - buy another house (preferably a refurbished missile base with its own runway), an extra car or two, and a couple of small planes, retire tomorrow, and live well (dying of a heart attack, liver failure, or small plane crash).
$100M - All of the above, restore a small flying museum of WW1/2/Cold-War-era aircraft, and fund a few $10M X-Prize-style contests and/or invest in a few privatized space travel (add "die in launch fireball", "die of oxygen deprivation in low-earth orbit", "die in a re-entry fireball" to my list of ways to meet an early demise -- moderated by the fact that I'll have to keep my weight down if anyone's gonna be able to send me to a space hotel)
$1B - buy political power.  Not to take over the world (why bother; I'll already own everything I want long before $100M), but to play with it.

If I had to choose an amount, I'd take $50M.  Enough to do anything, not enough to make it easy, and far below the amount of money I'd need to do serious damage.

That's not all bad.

Last year i started to play euromillions every week,i would only spend 2€ each time and made 40€ almost every week, then after a month i lost all my luck and started playing 4 then 8 then 10 and never winning anything, all in all i think spent around 200€ until i gave up and realised...i'm never going to be rich like that so may as well spend it on other stuff.

So true,my husband did win a million on a scratch off ticket, you get 34,000 a year after taxes, so my husband took and sold 10 years of annuities,we bought a house, a vehicle, gave our son some money for college, let "friends" borrow money (which no one has payed back) went to the casino & out to eat way to much, basically blew the money and now we have to wait 10 years to get the rest, unless we want to take a very significant loss.. So now my husband keeps buying more tickets thinking he is going to win again.

What ! ?  :o

We actually have somebody here associated with a cool $ MILLION lottery win !    ???  :o    .... well, 'knock me down with a feather !'

If I won .... I'd make sure a good portion of my winnings went into properties .... maybe in two or 3 different countries, and another fair bit of it getting compound interest that could keep me set for life. Maybe I'd use 15 % or so .... no more than 25 % to splurge on other luxury things.

I think a lot of people have an 'easy come, easy go mentality'. They just can't get a picture of themselves RICH ..... and STAYING rich .... so it happens again and again ... stories of people squandering it.

At least you should be relatively comfortable again, in another 10 years ?

Don't think I'm likely to win ...... since I virtually never play it ? Guess that doesn't help much ?  ???  :P

Generally, I think that gambling is for mugs !  :-X

Are you kidding me ? You've never heard Cliff Richard's 'Living Doll'  (Huh ! Shock, horror).  ???

I parodied the lyrics .... but only very slightly.  :-http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/images/cd/large/Valley_of_the_dolls_Philips_3145368762.jpg

From the Peter Pan of Pop, sung by Cliff Richard.

Got myself some crying, talking, sleeping, walking, plastic dolls
Got to do my best to please them, just 'cause they are plastic dolls
Got a roving eye and that is why they satisfy my soul
Got the one and only walking talking, plastic dolls

Take a look at their hair, it's UNreal
And if you don't believe what I say, just feel
I'm gonna lock them up in a trunk
So no badfinger hunk can steal them away from me

Got myself some crying, talking, sleeping, walking, plastic dolls
Got to do my best to please them, just 'cause they are plastic dolls
Got a roving eye and that is why they satisfy my soul
Got the one and only walking talking, plastic dolls

I play a California lottery game called Fantasy 5, where you pick 5 numbers and it's played every day. it starts out at 50grand, and grows each day if nobody wins. Usually there are 1 or 2 winners splitting the pot. I checked my numbers online tonight and while I did not win, there were 14 1st prize winners that divided  117grand.  14 winners!  :o  that's a record here.

I saw the lottery draw on television yesterday, and three of the six numbers to drop were my regular numbers, if I had played I would have won £10.
