Subject: One by U2 : Best Song Ever...
Written By: Henk on 12/19/07 at 4:06 pm
According to listeners of Dutch radio station Veronica , "One" by U2 is the best song ever. In what has become an annual tradition, listeners of said radio station voted for their most favorite song(s) of all time. With all votes counted, the 2007 edition of the Top 1000 of All Times was put together.
I've listed the top 100 songs below. The second number indicates chart position in last year's edition.
There's a high percentage of rock songs in the top 100, and a remarkably low percentage of Dutch artists (marked ).

Of all time? Interesting.
I'll conceed that it is a great song, but I don't think it'd be my favorite of all time. It's nice seeing Golden Earring on the list and I love Anouk. I have Nobody's Wife on cd somewhere in this mess.
I rarely agree with the yearly countdown of best songs anyways, it always surprises me what they pick.
There are alot of good songs in there none-the-less.

Well, I'm not sure if I agree with that pick either (but then, I didn't vote). Still, it's a nice break from the obvious choices (Bohemian Rhapsody or November Rain in the past).

Wow...I didn't even know Anouk was known elsewhere. She's HUGE over here, with about 20 songs that hit Top 40 in the past 10 years. Though I don't like all of her stuff, I respect her for being the performer and the mother (of three, if I'm not mistaken) as well.

Not surprisingly, most of these songs were big hits over here.

I'm really surprised that One is the #1 song. It's a beautiful song, but not the U2 song I would have placed at that spot. I would have picked Bad or I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For at number 1, The #18 song by U2 is fine where it's at.
One does feature Bono on guitar which to me is unusual because I've never seen him play.
but then, what do I know. I'm not Dutch ???

I'm not sure if this has got anything to do with being Dutch or not. You either like the song or you don't. To be honest, it wouldn't be my #1 pick either. If I had to pick a U2 song, it'd be "The Unforgettable Fire" (which may be somewhere in the list, but I don't know where exactly).
On the other hand: it's quite possible that "One" has gotten/gets more airplay over here than in, say, US. Maybe the recent remake of the song (with Mary J. Blige) also has to do with it becoming #1 in this list. (The remake was a big hit over here, much to my dislike)

London's Evening Standard (a tediously dull commuter newspaper!) did a run-down of the most popular tracks just before the millennium...
(I presume they were picked by tediously dull Londoners, but I could be wrong!)
It actually ran to 500 titles, but rather than bore you all senseless, I'll give you the Top 30...
1. Careless Whisper - George Michael
2. Angels - Robbie Williams
3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
4. My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion
5. Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye
6. No Matter What - Boyzone
7. Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis
8. Bitter Sweet Symphony - Verve
9. With Or Without You - U2
10. Hey Jude - Beatles
11. Hotel California - Eagles
12. Torn - Natalie Imbruglia
13. Imagine - John Lennon
14. High - Lighthouse Family
15. Stand By Me - Ben E. King
16. Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin
17. Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
18. Never Ever - All Saints
19. Moving On Up - M People
20. Truly Madly Deeply - Savage Garden
21. Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
22. What Can I Do - Corrs
23. Let Me Entertain You - Robbie Williams
24. Let It Be - Beatles
25. Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper
26. Easy - Commodores
27. Woman - John Lennon
28. Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
29. Losing My Religion - REM
30. (And perhaps the most surprising choice...) Love Me Do - Beatles (?)
...and so on...and so on...and so on...
Good songs as these are, I personally would 'avoid' them like the plague (it's that ol' thing called 'familiarity'... :D)

Truthfully I think Anouk might be known by only a handful of people here. I doubt they played her on the radio. I know that when I special ordered her CD from the shop, they had only one in stock. The way I discovered her was I was listening to some kind of internet radio podcast thing showcasing Golden Earring. They had mentioned a couple of the guys from GE either discovered or produced Anouk, then played Nobody's Wife in the podcast. I really liked the song, so I went and did some research. (Who said music is educational?) I did some reading about The Hague (which either she was from or performing at at the time, and read about Danish Kroeners...and all kinds of stuff. To make a long story short (too late), a chance hearing of the song opened up a whole new culture for me and that was pretty exciting.

Some good songs in that list! :)
Though I never much cared for 'One' by U2. I liked the partial cover by the Lighthouse Family better which can be heard in their song '(I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be) Free'

It's true that Golden Earring (more specifically George Kooymans) had a big hand in launching Anouk's career. He wrote & produced her first solo single "Mood Indigo", which is a long way from the music she's making today btw!
Apart from this Wikipedia entry, there's not a lot of info in English about Anouk. I was right about her having three children, though.
Anouk's latest album "Who's Your Momma" may become her international breakthrough, as I've read several times. Let's wait and see...

I was being silly with my Dutch comment, hopefully no offense. Now the more I think about this list the more I have to honestly say I think Radar Love should have made number 1, not just on the Dutch list but here too. It's an amzing song. Wikipedia has a good write up on the song and it played on my internet radio while I was listening at work today.
