Subject: Dutch radio station Classic FM goes Pop!

Written By: Henk on 11/15/07 at 1:58 pm

Dutch radio station Classic FM will be devoting 12 hours of their time to the influence of classical music on pop music and vice versa.

Broadcasting starts tomorrow, November 16, at 07.00 AM (CET)

(that's today, 20.00 PM, HST / 22.00 PM, PST / 00.00, CST / tomorrow, 01.00 AM, EST / tomorrow, 06.00 AM, GMT / today, 17.00 PM (Sydney) / today, 19.00 PM, NZT)

If you want to listen in, here's a link to the playlist. Times indicated are CET (do the math yourself). Use the button on the left that says "Luister Live" to actually listen to what is playing now.

I'll be working at the time, so I don't have a chance to listen myself... :(

Just like the Classic FM in the UK, just one movement is played.

I wonder...Will Classic FM (UK) also "go Pop" tomorrow at 6.00 AM? ???

Modified to add:
Never mind...I just checked the schedule, and they don't. So...you'll have to listen to the Dutch Classic FM.

I don't think they've had a Top 40 hit over here. :-\\

Now: Borsato Transcriptie ~ Wibi Soerjadi (of which I do not recognise)

That's probably because both the pianist (Wibi Soerjadi) and the subject of his exercise (Marco Borsato, a hugely popular singer) are Dutch.
To give you an impression of his popularity: Marco Borsato's seven most recent songs all reached #1 in our charts. He's had twelve #1 songs in total so far, and seven more that made Top 10. All songs combined, he spent well over a year at the #1 spot. He's been voted "Most Popular Male Singer" eleven years in a row. This year, he wasn't "in" for the "competition" anymore...

Well, that's just an impression. ::)

No, not like that. Just a company of actors/musicians (five) with a monastery act. One of them was a magician as well. Part of their act was this initiation rite. Five of the guests were picked (not sure if this was entirely random or staged) to become "novices". They had invented this totally silly ritual that we had to partake in... ::)

If you've clicked on "Luister Live", a window will open displaying what is currently being played (top right reads "Nu op Classic FM") and what has been on previously (top right reads "Zojuist op Classic FM").
Also, if you click on "Playlist" in this window, you will be redirected to a survey of the tracks played in the current hour. Times are displayed in CET, so you'll have to deduct 6 hours for EST.

Hope this helps.

There is a big difference between the British and Dutch Classic FMs. The Dutch just play the music, parts of a main piece (just like the British) but there seems to be less chat from the DJs and less commercials.

Less commercials, that's a good thing. Less chat...could be a good thing too, I assume. It all depends on what is being said.

That's what I noticed earlier too.

There is an entry for Classic FM, both Dutch and UK on Wikipedia, but looks in order on those pages.

Dutch staff banned from Wikipedia
Last Modified: 17 Nov 2007
Source: PA News

The Dutch Justice Ministry has temporarily blocked all its 30,000 employees from using Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia which can be edited by its users.

The move follows a magazine report which found more than 800 entries had been edited from ministry computers.

Though most of the changes found by magazine Intermediar were minor, some involved political parties or figures in criminal cases. Others were simply obscene.

That could very well be it.

Now at least we know what civil servants do during "office hours"... ::)

Just heard on Classic FM (Dutch) and they did not play this last Friday.

If We Could Only by Tom Parker and The New London Chorale.

Based on "The Shepherd's Song" from Beethoven's 6th Symphony "The Pastural".

They had to make choices, obviously. And who knows...maybe they'll have a sequel. :)

Thanks for reminding me I was thinking of phoning the UK Classic FM to see if it is going to be done over here. It would be a kind of thing that could be done at Christmas, but here (in the UK) people listen to Classic FM to get away from pop music.

Classic FM is one of only two radio stations that I listen to on a regular basis. The other one is Slam FM (which is just about the opposite on the music scale).

On a sidenote: the reason I started this thread rather late (only a few hours ahead) was because I understood they said 16 December instead of 16 November at first.
And with 16 December being a Sunday, that made perfect sense to me.

I can't find anything indicating in that direction...so I guess it was one day only. :(

On another note: there's gonna be a Classical Top 1000 at the end of the year. Don't know if they're doing something similar in UK... ???
Listeners can send in their favorite Top 10 (works have to be selected from a list on the website, though).

To give you an impression: here's a link to the 2006 edition.

When it came to the voting, I clicked on 5 pieces of Beethoven, and I did not hear the radio that day, I wonder the tracks for the chart positions.

Well, I can't tell you. :( The list doesn't seem to be on their website (anymore). Perhaps you can send them an email or letter to ask? ???

I know where the studios are in London, I might pop in reception and ask the two questions to them:

1. Will there be a British version of Classic FM goes Pop?
2. What was the Top 100 Relaxing pieces?

Howard...It's a classical music radio station (Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss etc). There's not gonna be any music from the 1980s.

The station may still play some music from films which may come from the 1980's.

Oh yes, there will be the odd composition from the late 20th century, too (not just 1980s). But it's not what the radio station is about, so don't tune in if you want 1980s music.

...and now I listen to it more than the UK Classic FM.

I have always taken it to be that music is an international language.
