Do you mean the school bus or a city bus?
School bus, front-ish. Never liked the back, the tough kids rode back there.
City bus, where ever there was an empty seat.

I rode a school bus from 1991-1994 and didn't really care where I sat. I sometimes liked sitting kinda up front so I could hear the radio (the ones I rode on had actual music radios). This one guy used to play one of the rock stations. Another one tuned it to AC, but I had this one southern lady who played Country all the time, lol. Although if I just wanted to relax I'd go sit in the back.
When I ride the regular bus, it depends how busy it is. Sometimes I'll just sit right down if it's packed and I don't feel like cramming to find a seat. Or if I'm just getting off in a minute. If it's relatively empty and I'm on it for awhile, alot of the time I'll head for the back. I guess nothing has changed in that respect.

I sit wherever there is an available seat. If I end up sitting at one of the front seats, I always get up if an elderly or disabled person needs to sit down

Well, it's been a while since I've taken a bus.
Last time I took a bus anywhere in the U.S was to a mall in New Jersey and I sat at the back. When I rode the school bus I sat upstairs at the back 'cus I was tres cool.
When I ride the train now I tend to sit or stand near the front because some of the people I know that take the same train seem to get on those carriages.

The back, because that's all the cool kids sat. I'd be a nerd if I sat in front. Same goes for class and all that...oh, and another benefit is your head doesn't become the target for paper planes, or spit balls or what not...nah, generally I sit on the middle right - which side of the bus is usually more important to me than whether its near the back or front. It's like with other things, I usually like going to the left or the right. Guess I'm a bit odd that way.

the last bus I rode was on the Las Vegas strip and I guess i would just grab whatever seat is available, but preferably a seat that has an empty one next to it if possible. I was with my 2 friends and we tried to get seats together, and it seems that it was always in the back or close to the rear.

I rarely have witnessed overcrowding. But that's bacause I try not to take busses between 8am-9am and 3pm-6pm. And if I must, I'd rather leave a bit early and catch a bus that takes a longer route as it would have less people on it. Otherwise I bike (damn, I need a car!)

Short story, surprisingly funny considering where it was.
Southern Missouri - The KKK sponsored a strip of highway, it was quite a long part of the highway. People kept writing things on their sings like "Hang the N**gers" etc etc.
The state didn't like this.
The KKK said it wasn't their fault and they were just cleaning the strip of highway.
The state renamed it the Rosa Parks memorial highway.
The KKK didn't renew their sponsorship.

School bus... the last seat in the back
Bus trips to Atlantic City...Last seat in the back
City bus...Any thats available, if the bus is empty or if it's open...The last seat in the back.
Notice a patern here; I trust no one, keep my back to the wall and my eyes open for danger.

I don't see too much of that on regular busses, but yeah, on the school busses, I do remember alot of the kids who kinda wanted to talk and be left alone by the driver went to sit in the back. Whenever anyone got in trouble, it wasn't for anything big. Then again, I never rode a bus past the time I was in Elementary school, so maybe it's a different story (although in 1992/'93 my bus did pick up some high schoolers along the route, but they were cool for the most part).

On a school bus, if you ask me, the better seats were the ones in front, that way when you got to your stop, you'd be the first one off. My motto was: "Why be in school longer than you have to be?". The faster I got home, the more TV I could watch

Great story....thanks... I once saw a documentary about a guy trying to increase membership in the KKK fortunately he didn't get a lot of takers but sadly I suspect the camera crew attached to him might have been a bigger deterrent because no one signed up but I feel some people probably wanted to... anyway- the funny thing about this was the idiot actually quoted Dr MLK JR in his interview to prove his point... ::)

For the record
n Montgomery, the first four rows of bus seats were reserved for white people. Buses had "colored" sections for black people—who made up more than 75% of the bus system's riders—generally in the rear of the bus. These sections were not fixed in size but were determined by the placement of a movable sign. Black people also could sit in the middle rows, until the white section was full. Then they had to move to seats in the rear, stand, or, if there was no room, leave the bus. Black people were not allowed to sit across the aisle from white people. The driver also could move the "colored" section sign, or remove it altogether. If white people were already sitting in the front, black people could board to pay the fare, but then had to disembark and reenter through the rear door. There were times when the bus departed before the black customers who had paid made it to the back entrance.
After a day at work at Montgomery Fair department store, Parks boarded the Cleveland Avenue bus at around 6 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 1955, in downtown Montgomery. She paid her fare and sat in an empty seat in the first row of back seats reserved for blacks in the "colored" section, which was near the middle of the bus and directly behind the ten seats reserved for white passengers. As the bus traveled along its regular route, all of the white-only seats in the bus filled up. The bus reached the third stop in front of the Empire Theater, and several white passengers boarded.
So, following standard practice, bus driver Blake noted that the front of the bus was filled with white passengers and there were two or three men standing, and thus moved the "colored" section sign behind Parks and demanded that four black people give up their seats in the middle section so that the white passengers could sit. So, following standard practice, bus driver Blake noted that the front of the bus was filled with white passengers and there were two or three men standing, and thus moved the "colored" section sign behind Parks and demanded that four black people give up their seats in the middle section so that the white passengers could sit.
She also detailed her motivation in her autobiography, My Story
“ People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old,
although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.
When Parks refused to give up her seat, a police officer arrested her. As the officer took her away, she recalled that she asked, "Why do you push us around?" The officer's response as she remembered it was, "I don't know, but the law's the law, and you're under arrest." She later said, "I only knew that, as I was being arrested, that it was the very last time that I would ever ride in humiliation of this kind."
Parks was charged with a violation of Chapter 6, Section 11 segregation law of the Montgomery City code, even though she technically had not taken up a white-only seat—she had been in a colored section. E.D. Nixon and Clifford Durr bailed Parks out of jail the evening of December 1.

Position wise, I'll sit anywhere. However if there's an empty seat (they seat two), that would be my preference.
Maybe I'm a bit naughty, but I generally sit on the outside of the seat (aisle) instead of automatically by the window. So when others board, they are more likely to take a seat adjacent to someone else who's already moved in.
It's not that I don't want anyone next to me ..... I just prefer not having to ask somebody to let me out ..... and also, I somehow feel mildly trapped. If the bus gets fuller, I briefly stand to let the new arrival have the window side of the seat next to me. (Hey, I was there first, so I get to choose .... that's my thinking).
Of course, if I see somebody who's disabled / has mobility problems, much older than me .... I'll move in.
Or a really good looking girl, I just might be tempted.
Yeah, I've changed a bit over the years. When I was younger, I always wanted the window seat on a plane. These days, give me the aisle. Not 'trapped', able to get up and wander without crawling over anybody. Of course, the downside is YOU have to keep getting up to let them out/in .... which is not so good when you've fallen asleep.
However .. that middle seat on a plane ... doesn't generally have ANYTHING going for it. You're just the 'meat in the sandwich', maybe competing for an arm-rest, not as good of a view as window, having to get up to let 'window' in/ out, having to ask 'aisle' to let you out ......
Yeah, you MAY be sat between 2 playboy bunnies ..... but that's more likely to be 'in your dreams'! ::)
