We have Speak&Spell when my son was young and we were rather worried it would teach our son to speak in an American accent.

yes, it was a lot of fun. I think I might still have my Speak&Spell...somewhere in the attic. I'll have to look for it sometime.

On the Word version of Speak&Spell, there was a game similar to Hangman, we all used to play that all the time.

I remember Speak and Spell. I never had one though, but I thought they were super cool
Ever watch those Johnny Carson tapes .. the clip from 1983 with Albert Brooks doing a ventriloquist act with a Speak and Spell with a face glued on the back of it ...
Albert: So I hear you just got back from mexico
Speak and Spell: C
Albert: So I understand you've been having trouble hearing lately
Speak and Spell: A
Albert: I said you're having trouble hearing?
Speak and Spell: A
Albert: So I hear you got your girlfriend a gift. What did you get her?
Speak and Spell: X-K-E
Albert: Oh a Jaguar. That's a nice car. So what did she give you?
Speak and Spell: V-D

Literally when I was about three years old, my Speak and Spell taught me to read. Considering my doctors told my parents that I may not have ever been able to.. I owe a considerable amount of my education to owning one of these when I was small. I remember testing myself learning the alphabet forwards... then backwards!
For reasons related to my own shame, I shan't tell you which I learned first...!
