Subject: Message Board "trends" over time?

Written By: Marty McFly on 10/13/07 at 3:05 am

I was just thinking about this right now, but there seem to be a few ways to "date" posts on the board. One that sticks out to me now, was that the older posts on this version of the board (I believe it was sometime in early 2004 since that's how far back the current history goes) had people manually signing their name at the end of each post. This was still going on when I joined, but kinda seemed to stop in 2005 or early last year. I've noticed Cat still does this, though, so it's like the old tradition is hanging on just a teeny bit. ;)

I'm sure there's others, but this is the only one I can think of. Also, in the past, posts seemed to be alot more basic in the decade boards, and got tons of views.

The only thing I can think of right off is the way that certain kinds of threads pop up for a while then go away again. IE: The "Ask Me..." trend, the "Decadology" trend (we all know about that one) and now what appears to be the "x Years Ago Thread" trend.

I'm sure others can think of more.

Also remember when people used to type in colours. Like me typing in red, jiminy typing in red also, rock n' roll's biggest fan posting in blue and others. I think there was one who posted in green all the time. This was all back in about early-mid 2005.

I use the the Mahogony setting for viewing the boards and the colour of the typing is white.

Oh yeah, the Ask Me ones (some of which are still ongoing) were huge around the time I joined, or just after. I forgot about that one. I also remember when lots of people posted in colors. I tried that a few times, but it's too much of a hassle, especially if you kinda post "quickly", which I do sometimes. Let's say if I'm talking with someone as they're actually online and am semi-rushing to post before they log off.

Good one, lol. ;)

I like the signing of a persons name at the end of a post or PM. it kinda reminds of the way you end a letter
yours truly, Mike  8)

some people, myself included like to use the same emoticon at the end of their post. I like the cool sunglasses dude or the  :) happy smiley and others like Mr Mister for instance use  :D  it's a fun way of helping to show one's personality I guess.  When I first joined back in Dec 05, I was suspected of being the former member that always posted in blue. I did not know that was his offical color until I read through old posts to see why I was being considered as him, and I noticed our style & tastes were very similar, & that my user name also ended in the word fan and then I noticed the BLUE and knew that if I had posted in that color without realizing it, I would have been strongly suspected.

---so were members required to sign their name at the end of a post back then in the good ol' days?  ???

When I first joined, I "signed" my name as a way to tell people that I don't mind being called "Cat" and you don't have to always spell my name out-i.e. CatwomanofV. Also, like Badfinger-Fan said, it is like signing the end of a letter. Now, I do it because of 1. It is a habit and 2. It is now my "trademark".  ;)

Oh, another trend which I hesitate to mention because I'm afraid people will start doing it again but those annoying emotion photos-what was that guy's name-Eric? And PLEASE, PLEASE Don't post any of those pics.

I remember when the photoshop thread was in full force, when Jiminy was still here. I used to love seeing what person he was going to choose next, as his photoshop victim! ;D

Remember Poop Pants flooding the chat?

I miss making Howard Avatars.  I haven't had any good ideas of late, nor have I had the time.  I have two days off today and tomorrow, so maybe I could make some new ones

You remember that, huh? One of my more embarrassing moments. lol.  That was when I realized that I could NEVER change my user name-even as a joke because I would always give myself away. lol.
