Not sure if this has been done before, but pretty much if you find something you know someone else would like, share it with them or let them know about it.
This one's for Erin, and the topic is '80s songs that have a strong '50s or early-mid '60s influence with a link to a YouTube video for the song, if they exist. I know you're into doo wop and alot of other "Fifties" sounds. Some of these are more popular, while some are rarer or album tracks, but I know you'll probably like all these. I do, and I'm not sure if there's anything we don't have in common. ;)
Don't Try to Stop It - Roman Holliday (I already showed you this one, but thought I would again)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMXYcPnySxg
Sea of Love - The Honeydrippers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLDNjzrjbAY
Possession Obsession - Hall and Oates (it's so catchy and sorta middle tempo, I think it's one of their best songs, It was a hit single, just probably less popular. They're even dressed '50ish in the video).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAmgHGtOeJ0
The Longest Time - Billy Joel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smeyf8nhM5Q
Doing it All For My Baby - Huey Lewis (love the Frankenstein spinoff video too - the music starts around 3:40)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIH8xctqGUw
Uptown Boys - Louise Goffin (it's from the Fast Times soundtrack - very girl groupish)
High School Nights - Dave Edmunds (it's like Survivor/Loverboyish '80s arena rock, but in a way that evokes a rebellious and fun '50s high school experience)
Little Wild One - Marshall Crenshaw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R85DIBGBtFA
California Girls - David Lee Roth (actual music starts at 1:15 - looks like it was taped from MTV back in the actual '80s too!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmbhfI8f_Ek
Voice of America's Sons - John Cafferty (his stuff is all ike a more retro Born in the USA-era Bruce Springsteen)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWJhuHWzrqA
You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brWVEHkP0Bs
Rock and Roll is King - ELO (I know you're really into them, so I picked a less common song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZWXnkfZ-bY
Crumblin' Down - John Mellencamp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SumeTcAsu7E
Shoop Shoop Song - Cher
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX58TfMj5UI
My Girl - Donnie Iris (sort of a medium tempo love song. Imagine like a more retro Eddie Money or Billy Squier)

Donnie Iris is/was a Pittsburgh icon, and they loved playing him there for many years. I'm sure she would definately know who he is.
I went to a Halloween costume/decoration store tonight and saw a costume that Erin would love (I think).

^ I'd never heard of him at all until I saw a few of his songs on '80s compilations (I love eighties music and I buy CDs/tapes and things like that at goodwill shops and secondhand stores all the time). I usually find out things about artists by doing research or reading reviews, etc. Although of course I know about some from back in the day during the actual '80s or early-mid '90s...when I watched VH1 or whatnot. But yeah, I think there is some truth about artists remaining kinda more popular in their hometowns (Bruce Springsteen is huge in Jersey from what I know), so I wouldn't be surprised if she's heard of him.
Yeah, I think she'll like that costume too.
Mcfly, you're going to win her heart ;)
Thanks, but we're just friends, lol. :)

Oh wow...I totally missed this thread, and it's a good one..for sure!! :) Thanks for all of the song recommendations Jess, I know a bunch of them...but there were some that I haven't heard of. And yes, I totally know who Donny Iris is. You can't be from the Pittsburgh area w/o knowing/hearing of him! :D ;D
AND, Patty, those costumes are simply adorable! I just need to lose a few more pounds, and then I could totally rock something like that! :)
And Wayne...your obsession with Joan Jett leather is starting to worry me! hahaahah...just kidding! ;) ;D For that...I must lose more than a few pounds! ;)

^ Thanks lol, I had you in mind when I thought of all that too. :)
BTW, I'd never heard of Iris, but I wonder if he's to you guys like Huey Lewis (well, at least in the early-mid '80s) or Smashmouth were/are for the Bay Area? I've always heard lots of Huey's songs on the radio here, but apparently that's kinda less so with people elsewhere.
For the record, I know I've said this so many times now that it's probably started to lose its effect...but seriously, I don't think you need to lose a single pound (unless you want to). There's no way you could look any better than you do now anyway. As far as celebrities, I've thought you sorta look like the early '90s Amy Grant - just alot younger and cuter. :)

I recommend this to anyone who loves catchy music ...
They are a band from my hometown called Bedouin Soundclash. In 2005, they topped the Canadian chart with 'When the Night Feels My Song', which hovered in the Top 100 for close to a year, and even found it's way in to the UK Top 40. In 2006, the song was used in an ad campain for T-Mobile UK adverts, and it re-charted in the UK Top 40
Their latest album recently gave them a Top 10 hit in Canada with the song 'Walls Fall Down'. To my knowledge, none of these songs have spilled over into the American charts yet, but hopefully one day they will be popular there

You know what, I've never seen Streets of Fire, but I've heard it's loosely a story about rock and roll and basic teenage life in the future (although it's never specified when it is).
That said, I love "I Can Dream About You" and even have the vaguest, vaguest memories of hearing it on the radio when it came out in 1984 (even if I didn't buy it and get into it again until the mid '90s). It's catchy pop/rock, but definitely has an old school R&B influence on top of it.

'Streets of Fire' is the greatest movie of the 80s 8)
There are alot of people out there who don't know that song came from 'Streets of Fire', and generally assume that guy singing is Dan Hartman
Two other awesome ones from it is the opening song 'Nowhere Fast' and the closing song 'Tonight is What it Means to Be Young', both performed by Fire Inc. The latter was actually a minor hit in the US

The latter was actually a minor hit in the US
Nowhere Fast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTXJfOd3qv4
Tonight is What it Means to Be Young: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9CIETjy2u8
Since both songs were a Jim Steinman production, in came Meat Loaf in 1986, and turned 'Nowhere Fast' into a minor UK hit ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syhbKcQuKiA
But he changed it too much to suit his style of music. Give me the Fire Inc original anyday
Did Hartman do a cover version of the song from the movie? I didn't know that and always assumed it was his song. Like I said, I've never watched the movie, only heard things about it here and there, so I can't say from personal experience (just generally speaking, I'm knowledgeable about '80s music and '90s television and movies).
What is Streets of Fireabout? I get the impression it's about general teenage/young life in the future that isn't necesarilly about rock and roll per se, but that has a backdrop to the movie.

The movie is about a singer (Diane Lane) who gets kidnapped by the leader of a gang and her ex-boyfriend (Michael Pare) is called in to rescue her. I don't want to say any more because I don't give away too much of the movie. Yeah, it has a futuristic feel to it but it also has a 50ish feel to it, too. I HIGHLY recommend watching the film. It is a good one.

I love this song, too. I heard this song from time to time in the 80's and was a regular fixture on AC radio in the 90's. I've never actually seen the movie though; I'll have to seek it out now. :)

He's a cute kitty. I think he's a baby Scottish Fold kitten. I've always wanted one. Scottish Fold Cats (2 of them) were the mascots of a United States book distributor named Baker and Taylor, which my library used. So every catalog we'd get would have a picture of the two cats. Anyways to make a long story short (too late), thanks...it's cute. ;D

When I said this in one of my posts "I shall call him George. I will love him, and pet him and squeeze him...", it was a sort of infamous line from a Bugs Bunny cartoon, where Bugs is snatched up a big Abominable Snowman who utters the line while cuddling Bugs (much to Bugs' chagrin).

Hi Alan,
That is an awesome picture (and shirt). Did I ever tell you that I met my hubby thanks to Star Trek? I had been dating people offline for many years and never really had anything develop into a more serious relationship. So...after my divorce (ok yeah, I guess that was a serious relationship, but it didn't last) ANYWAYS, after my divorce, I decided to put in a personals ad at Yahoo Personals. Women could list for free, so what did I have to lose, eh? To make a long story short (too late), I just wrote the ad like I talk to people here, no pretentions, what you see is what you get, and I listed my favorite television shows, one of which was Star Trek. It just so happened that my (now) husband did a search for women in Ohio who liked Star Trek on the personals site, and I was the only match. lol Two years later, we were married, and now nearly 5 years married, we're still going strong. So, I now have a special fondness for Star Trek.
P. S. I love that shirt, it was worth whatever you paid for it. :)

I recommend getting up 10 minutes earlier to everyone.
not rushing in the AM can change your life.
When I get up 10 minutes earlier, I end up spending those extra 10 minutes here ... instead of doing something more constructive ...

If you want a brilliant 3D shooter type game akin to 'doom' 'heretic' etc; but with fantastic graphics ... I'd thoroughly recommend 'Painkiller' from a few years back.
If you want possibly the best album from the 90's ... I'd suggest 'MCMXC' A. D. ... by Enigma.

, I need to myself. i saw a story about this Pinball Arcade in the CSAA Via monthly magazine for Triple A autoclub members. It said that you pay a donation at the door and the Pinball machines are free to play, chips and salsa avail to guests. I've never went, but one of these days, I'd love to go and play vintage Pinball machines 8)

Ooohh. I would LOVE to go-but not too sure if we can pull it off. I am wondering if that was one of the theatres my mother worked at. She worked at a whole bunch of them in that area back in the dark ages-and I'm sure all of them have different names then they did back then.

One would assume a specially designed... bean bag.. like creation, specifically molded to facilitate a good shag. That being said - I think if you need that much help to do something which is exceedingly simple, I think I'd prefer if you were sterilized before participating. Those aren't genes that need to be passed on.
