Woo! Good month, October.

I have 2 hours 25 minutes 'til October starts here.  I feel pretty good about the month though.  Going to visit my bro in San Diego in a few weeks.  8)

Hmm today I feel like crap, but yes on the whole October is usually a good month. My nephews birthday, our anniversary (10 freaking years!!!  :o)
oh and Bowling for Soup on the 19th and a Ross Noble live screening on the 21st. 

First tests in Amsterdam revealed that my mother (still) has too much fluid behind her lungs, and her blood pressure is currently too low, so she can't be treated/operated on right now. They've also discovered a small hole in one of her cardiac valves (I don't know if this is a result of her condition, or a probable cause). That should also be taken care of, but like I said: nothing can be done just yet. They're trying their best to get her in optimal shape for any surgery. Of course we all hope this will all be behind us asap.
Visiting hours are from 15:00 to 20:00, so we have plenty of time to see her (although we need to drive over an hour to get to the hospital).
Thank goodness I have taken the week off...

She has been moved from Coronary Care Unit to ICU (still in Amsterdam) because she keeps having breathing problems. She's been intubated and is kept in a comatose condition in order to help her with breathing. She was seriously short of breath when we visited her yesterday, I could see that. Needless to say this is not the news we were hoping for. :\'( I have given up hope for her attending Friday's wedding ceremony. As I understand it, my brother and his wife are trying to have the ceremony postponed.

Ah Henk, I'm so sorry, I was so hoping she would show some kind of awesome improvement and in the best case scenario, she'd make it to be in the first row for your brother's wedding.  But obviously, the hospital is the best place for her right now, and it's good that they are trying to keep her comfortable as well.

I just found out my own family is in hospital.  My grandma (who is 87).  They think she has pnumonia.  She didn't recognize her daughter (my aunt) the other day when she came to visit and also had no appetite, so she wasn't eating.  The doctors put her on some really strong antibiotics and apparently that is helping a good bit.  I am going to try to drive in to see her and the rest of my family today (it's a 4 hour drive.)  She was asking my mom when my ex-husband and my anniversary was, so she's a little confused, but heck if I can have a coherant conversation at 87, I'll be pretty damned lucky.  I just passed the year anniversary of when I was in the hospital (for only a week), where they did gallbladder surgery and discovered I had diabetes, and I had no idea what was going on when I was in.  They had me signing permission forms that...could have said you will donate your kidneys now, and I probablly would have signed it.  :D

Not knowing how it feels to lose a parent, I cannot claim to know what you're feeling.
However, growing up only with my Mom in my life, I can imagine the pain you're experiencing.

I have watched my Mother, my Guitarist, and my best friend lose at least one, if not both, parents.
The aftermath of those deaths still send waves even today.
Know that it's OK to heal at your own pace. Give yourself enough time to get through it, and know that you have many caring people around this planet who are thinking of, and hurting with, you.

Our little red Toyota Corolla is in the mechanics shop because when Diane was driving it on Sunday, the accelerator stuck and she couldn't get it to slow dow, and somehow managed to get the car in neutral, tun off the engine & brake, and quite frankly, I was very impressed with how she handled that situation. I picked her up and we had the car towed to the shop and she sorta broke down and cried once we were alone.  :\'(  so tonight and this week, we're looking to get her a new car, something small like a Hyundai Elantra. just a nice little commuter car.

Today is my Grandma's 87th birthday.  We celebrated with dinner last night.  She has just gotten over pneumonia, which was really scary considering her age, and so it has made this birthday even more special.  She one of the coolest people I have ever known.  :-*

Been about 5 months since I've had a haircut.
The way it grows, it gets bushy and long on the sides, but I can't get it to grow past shoulder length.
It's weird, actually.

Today is My father's 66th Birthday and wouldn't you know it,He's on vacation with my Mother,gone to Acapulco,Mexico for a cruise.

wow. i am in training and have been with the job ab out 10 days. i was left to run the office alone for 8  hours.  trial by fire. it was ok, but it was not really a learning experience.
I had to tell someone that I didn't think that was a good use of my training time.

I got into a minor car accident tonight.  I have been having high blood sugar readings all day and been kinda "slow" reacting today.  I hit a car ahead of me when I couldn't stop in time.  I was trying to move into the turning lane (I signaled) but this huge pick-up truck behind me whipped around me and passed by me just as I was starting to move over.  So I pull my van back into the lane, but hit the car ahead of me when I was distracted by the truck passing me.  Long story short.  It was my first accident ever.  Nobody was hurt.  The guy ahead of me only got minor paint scratch on his bumper, I, on the other hand, broke my headlight and the plastic grill and bumper cover on my van.  It looks worse then it is.  Hubby changed the headlight out.  I am still shook up about the whole thing.  I need to make some changes in how I deal with my diabetes, as I am the only driver in the family.  This was a severe wake-up call for me.  Things could have been alot worse.

definitely a wakeup! I'm so glad you or nobody else was hurt and that it ended up being a fender bender, but still enough to shake a person up. you take care and relax and don't dwell on it too much Patty. it's gonna be allright.

Time to take a trip to a salon.  Really, they can do what it takes to get your hair the way you want it.  Just let them do it.

Wow, that is great.  Make sure they will let you come back, though, in times of stress.  Sometimes I think they shuttle people out of the system just to make themselves look good.

Glad to hear you are o.k.  Did I ever mention the time a car drove into our house?  The guy who did it was having some sort of diabetic complication.  The police thought he was drunk.

On an even more serious note Patty you really need to get the diabetes stable.  It's not just day to day problems you can have but real long term complications.  I realise that there is a monetary issue to this (which I think is shocking) but your long term health has got to come first, surely?

Wow! I'm glad you're okay! You know, you can't entirely blame the accident on YOU, although diabetes is nothing to mess with (several of my family members have it in varying degrees). It sounds like it was more that other guy's fault (the one in the truck that whipped around you) than yours. What an ass. :P

My day is going to consist of waiting for the peeps to come and fix our lock on the front door. It refuses to turn because the tumblers are out of alignment or something. Luckily we have a deadbolt that works, so we just use that. Still though, we shouldn't be having all these troubles with everything since it's all BRAND NEW. ::)

Today, I picked up a few groceries (mostly lunch stuff for the kids) and some cleaning stuff (Meg's school has a Fall Festival on Sat. and they auction off gift baskets, the theme for her class is a cleaning basket, and since most of the other parents a either poor, cheap or lame I've spent about $10 on stuff.  ::) )

Oh, I also bought myself a couple of shirts.

As to me I am pretty fed up. I had the day from hell at work yesterday due to my w****r of a boss being his usual useless self and today hasn't been much better. We have asked for a meeting with him on friday morning but I don't expect for one moment he will listen to a word we say AND of course, he is *NEVER* wrong. Yesterday I was SO mad, today I am really fed up. I used to love my job and now I'm really starting to hate going to work.  :-\\ 

I got into a minor car accident tonight.  I have been having high blood sugar readings all day and been kinda "slow" reacting today.  I hit a car ahead of me when I couldn't stop in time.  I was trying to move into the turning lane (I signaled) but this huge pick-up truck behind me whipped around me and passed by me just as I was starting to move over.  So I pull my van back into the lane, but hit the car ahead of me when I was distracted by the truck passing me.  Long story short.  It was my first accident ever.  Nobody was hurt.  The guy ahead of me only got minor paint scratch on his bumper, I, on the other hand, broke my headlight and the plastic grill and bumper cover on my van.  It looks worse then it is.  Hubby changed the headlight out.  I am still shook up about the whole thing.  I need to make some changes in how I deal with my diabetes, as I am the only driver in the family.  This was a severe wake-up call for me.  Things could have been alot worse.


Thank goodness nobody was injured.  What became of the guy who passed you?  From the sounds of things, he is the one at fault ?

My case manager forgot to give me an award for National Volunteers Week back in April but I had that interview with Pathmark so he handed it to me today. :)

My mother's condition seems to be deteriorating... :( :-\\
She has been moved from Coronary Care Unit to ICU (still in Amsterdam) because she keeps having breathing problems. She's been intubated and is kept in a comatose condition in order to help her with breathing. She was seriously short of breath when we visited her yesterday, I could see that. We'll be off to visit her today in 45 minutes.

Needless to say this is not the news we were hoping for. :\'( I have given up hope for her attending Friday's wedding ceremony. As I understand it, my brother and his wife are trying to have the ceremony postponed.

Good luck and let me know how that talk goes!  My parents never let us sell anything door to door for fundraisers at school (school, band, scouts, etc.).  It seemed like everyone in my class/group had hundreds of relatives in the immediate vicinity who would buy tons of stuff, but my relatives were spread all over Western MI and none of them lived closer than an hour away.  To add insult to injury, my parents never bought anything either.  They didn't want us bugging the neighbors because there were so many of us having to go out and sell stuff.  My parents never talked to the school, they just sent us back with blank forms.

I would really like to know how it goes (seriously).

I hate this sort of thing.  It is the lowest form of fundraising along with sending kids with cans out into traffic.  Beyond that, what do you mean she kicked you in the stomach and slammed an oscillating fan on to your foot?  Seems like you have more to worry about than a fundraising thing.

You got that right on both counts!  Plus, when I was in school, the incentive to "sell, sell, sell" was cash (in some groups--prizes in others).

My parents never bothered with diplomacy (though I think the statement you made should certainly be understood by the school administration or whomever).  They just told us we couldn't do it....my dad said no child of his was going to panhandle for someone else (said to us, not the school).  They would just send us back to school with the form still blank.  What I didn't appreciate is the teacher/leader calling attention to the fact that it was blank in front of the whole group.  I would just have to say I wasn't allowed to go door to door and didn't have relatives that lived close by.

When she DOES get angry enough to show it, she cuts loose. As I said, she was throwing a fit. I put her in her room, and she proceeded to lash out.
I was the target, and as her father, I meted out what I felt was the proper punishment.

AFA the "fundraising" thing, the schools are in desperate need of extra $$ and because of some stupid law, can't remember it right now, because they're not a non-profit organization, they can't ask for $$ without offering something (or a chance at something) in return.  My concern is the raffle tickets....isn't that akin to gambling? I usually just buy a few things myself and ask hubby's sisters and mom.  I would honestly much rather just give the school a donation (which I have done in the past) because one can only use so much wrapping paper and if I ordered what I really wanted to (Kathryn Beich chocolates of different varieties), I'd gain 20 lbs :D

I finally got my G2 Driver's License on Wednesday, which means I am now able to drive on my own, but just my luck, my brother came home to visit and he has been using the car all week.  I was soo looking forward to Wednesday when I could finally drive myself to work.  Guess I'll have to wait until Monday to look forward to that.

weird stuff, I worked, then went to my softball game at 630pm in which we dominated the other team and won, & while playing shortstop, I turned an amazing double play on a lazy fly that I almost caught just over the pitcher. I snagged it up, took two steps towards 2ndbase, tapped the bag with my foot & while facing centerfield, did a 180 spin & threw a rocket to 1st base all in one motion to beat the runner and end the inning. (very Jeter-like)  8)  the weird part is that I came home and watched BackStreet Boys videos on Youtube. go figure that one out  ???

She has a date (she always went w/ a group before) and I got her a new outfit because she hasn't had one in so long (she has always rotated her dresses from 8th grade and her freshman year).  The nice thing about it is that it isn't a formal dress (because she said the theme is so lame), so she can wear it out to dinner, etc.

We went grocery shopping today in the godawful heat. Car was acting up as usual, and...AND....Rice went to roll up the window and it got stuck! So he got it unstuck and the damned thing fell off the track and slipped into the door itself! Wonderful! More money to put in that piece of crap car.

Rough weekend.  Micah had fun at Homecoming, but ended up in ER at 1 a.m. due to migraine (couldn't control at home).  Home at 4, asleep about 4:30.  Phone woke me a little before 8.  Was Mom telling me my dad had fallen in the street the night before and broken his left hip.  He had hip replacement surgery this morning.  We spent the day with him.  Mom & friends has a mishap on the way home from ER, so she has to get a new tire for the car.  Micah & I will go back down to Muskegon to be there at 8 a.m. to spend the day with Dad, Mom will come after tire replaced.  Will go home to teach Mon night, work Tues, teach Tues night and come back either Tuesday night or first thing Wed morning and stay until Friday.  We have to go to Loyola (non-refundable train tickets, but parents understand) on Saturday, but will be back on Sunday for the day.

I made the phone calls for Mom as I knew she was exhausted.  I convinced everyone that things were well in hand so they wouldn't feel the need to come up as Mom doesn't wish for any company beyond Micah & me.

I had a good day, got a call to help Frank Sinatra Jr's road crew which of course means good pay. Got to hang out with the orchestra before and after the performance and then tear down after the audience left, Sinatra seems an Ok sorta guy, he couldn't hit half his notes though, but let's be fair, great entertainer his father was.. he couldn't hit all his notes either.

As for me- I am looking at a podiatrist appointment, for some trouble in my left foot.
I also received some news from my Primary Practitioner.
According to the bloodwork, there is a small concern with my liver and cholesterol.
We'll see what happens in about 2 months, when the medication I've been put on starts really kicking in.

....Diane's 30th Reunion Saturday Night was really nice & she had a great time seeing all her classmates & childhood friends. the food was good & the power point presentation was cute, I especially liked seeing Lady Di in her skimpy white tennis outfit when they showed the pics of the sports teams. I was a good hubby & schmoozed as needed & didn't act like I was bored.
I had mentioned (or did I?) that the accelerator on our old 1989 Toyota corolla got stuck while Diane was driving & she almost had an accident trying to stop it & with that incident, I decided it was time to get her a safer car so I went online & submitted a request from Hyundai dealers for a price quote on a Elantra & got about 10 voice mails & 20 emails from dealers trying to sell me a car. I returned one phone call to this cute sounding saleslady & she gave me a quote that was $400 under invoice & a $2000 rebate for a 2007 Hyundai Elantra so we went there today to let Diane test drive it & since the deal was so good, & we needed another car for her to drive to work in, we went ahead & signed on the dotted lines & added a car payment to our monthly bill. We will pick up on Tuesday after they do the window tint, She's very happy & I'm pleased that all the negotiations were done by email & phone & I only had to sign papers when we went in. It was very painless.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra under the conductor Kurt Masur were superb. There were two pieces played at the concert, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5 ("The Emperor") with pianist Maurizio Pollini, and Shostakovich Symphony No.5 in D minor.

During the interval there was one old man complaining there were lots of mistakes in the piano concerto, I never heard any. I was just happy to hear the pieces played live.

Diane and I are both off tomorrow, actually today, so we can go and pick up her new car. I think she's excited about it. I talked to the mechanic that has our old 1989 Toyota and he said he's almost done with it. I then said "now, you're not going to charge us for this are you"?? because we just paid him over $300 bucks in Sept for a major tuneup on that car and some foreign object got into the carbuerator and caused the accelarator to get stuck, almost causing Diane an acciident. His response was "I don't know, did we cause it"?? I said, let's just get the car driveable & we can come back to that issue. he called me back about an hour later & apologized & said he had no problem not charging me & I told him I agreed that this was the right way to handle it, since his shop are the only ones that would have opened the carbuerator during the tuneup & we've gone to him many times before. anyways, we'll pick that up tomorrow too and then we're getting rid of it.

Spent about 3 hours in the emergency room tonight.  I ate and took my insulin injection as I usually do, then we went out to see a really bad movie (Shoot 'em up - must have been a rejected James Bond plot).  So anyways, I tested my blood for sugar level, normal readings should very from about 100 - 120, and about 160 2 hours after a meal.  My reading on my meter 2 hours after my meal was 396, which put me into a slight panic, then we re-tested me on my husband's test kit (He also has diabetes, but does not take shots (yet)).  My reading on HIS meter was 292.  I've had high readings before, but never like this.  The funny thing was, I did not feel sick.  Usually when it's low (below 90) you get the shakes, and when it's high you get...either jittery or lethargic.  I was having normal conversations.  So...I drove myself to the hospital (which is only about a mile or 2 away).  When the hospital measured it on their machine, it only registered at 214 (which is still high, but not alarmingly so).  Then 3 hours later, they took a blood sample (which hurt like the Dickens - my vein in one arm was playing hide and seek), and my reading came down to 193.  They released me without giving me any medication or any specific instructions.  According to them, high readings aren't so much to worry about as low readings.  I found this advice weird, but alrighty then.  So I came home, took a dose of my quick-acting insulin and watched t.v. most of the night.  I still don't know why I got such high readings on both my own meter and my hubby's meter.  We are going to get our batteries replaced tomorrow and one of my insulin prescriptions refilled in the morning.

^ Oh dear. That sounds scary, but at least it was nothing bad.  :)

I just got back from my friend Father's viewing.  He was 85.  The first Reformed Mennonite death ceremony I've gone to.  Had trouble figuring out how to dress for that.  I could dress up, couldn't wear jeans.  I ended up wearing a gray long sleeved shirt and blue dress pants.  Funeral's tomorrow, so I probably won't be checking in.

No, not at all. In fact, I felt very confident. O0

I made some steamed rice and some beef skewers for my mini potluck with Nancy & Davlyn tomoorw at work. the beef was marinated for a couple hours in Iron Chef brand sesame & garlic marinade and then threaded on wooden skewers and then put under the broiler for a couple minutes each side. I got them slightly charred which is what I wanted and Diane is sampling some right now as I post and she's groovin' on it.  I did a load of dishes in the dishwasher and now it's " down time" to post or do whatever iI feel like doing

Work for half a day then home to see if I can catch whoever is doing the building work at the front of the house. It needed doing of course but it's a bit alarming to go to work in the morning and come home to a huge trench with hazzard tape around it that night!!
No prior warning from either the builder or the rental agency someone just came and dug a hole and cleared off!

When will it end? (School that is)  :-\\ Never-ending paperwork and research and writing. Bring on November 15! (I just answered my initial question there)

Feeling a bit tired today. Me and the boy are just going to go to Walgreen's (which is literally around the corner :D) so I can pick up my blood pressure medicine and then mail off the car payment for our POS car. Well, the one time I got four hours of sleep was on a Friday morning, in 1995. Also from 2 AM to 6 AM. I was only 15 at the time and tried to average 7 1/2 to 8 hours of sleep per night.

Umm..let me think.  When they got the higher reading, it did come from the same hand that I tested on both my hubby and my meters.  But when they drew blood from my arm, it was the opposite arm which came out a little bit lower.

I guess it's true that "Sugar and spice and everything nice...that's what little girls are made of".  The higher reading must have come from my sugar side.  ;D

So a half hour ago, I walked out to our front door, opened it, and smelled something burning in the hallway. I thought, "Great" and came back in, turned off the computer, and then went back to the front door because I heard someone in the hallway. It was the maintenance guy and he asked me if I smelled it as well. I told him yeah, and he started checking everything on our floor, then moved on. So I came back in, got Jason up and dressed, got the dog on the leash, and went outside. Luckily, it was just another guy finishing up the door they were cutting in to the building. He was using one of those high powered saws or something. :P

Living on the third floor of a 14 story building (technically, it has thirteen, but superstition and all), you get kind of paranoid about fire. Especially when you have kids and pets.

Got an unexpected delivery in the mail.

Some months ago, Gis and I were talking about British recipes.
She promised to send me some.
She mailed 'em off on March 10th.

I just got them today.

I guess Royal Mail is about as bad as American Mail, eh?
I'm gonna have to rib her about it. ;D

I ordered a CD in August from amazon, just got it today.

Huh, my Ma sent me a DVD of the new dog about 6 days ago, got it today.

I had a good day, got a call to help Frank Sinatra Jr's road crew which of course means good pay. Got to hang out with the orchestra before and after the performance and then tear down after the audience left, Sinatra seems an Ok sorta guy, he couldn't hit half his notes though, but let's be fair, great entertainer his father was.. he couldn't hit all his notes either.

As for me- I am looking at a podiatrist appointment, for some trouble in my left foot.
I also received some news from my Primary Practitioner.
According to the bloodwork, there is a small concern with my liver and cholesterol.
We'll see what happens in about 2 months, when the medication I've been put on starts really kicking in.

I forgot to mention...Last Sunday Pete Best played at the crappiest bar on the island...I can't find one person that went to see him.
There was a big article in the paper the day before, but no flyers, no advertising.
I wonder what happened?
And I hope he just doesnt' play drums all night.

As for me- Started on some meds for my cholesterol. Hopefully, it will help.



Check if your meds are a form of statins.  A friend had a bad experience with these, did some research and found that there is a little reported side effect of statin medication.  He swtiched to a cholestrol lowering spread which contains statins and afterwards he had problems with his memory.  Not short term memory loss but more the permanent 'how to do things' memory.  He couldn't remember how to turn the shower on, forgot how to tie his laces, struggled with his sons first grade maths - that kind of thing.  As soon as he stopped using that brand of spread he was back to normal.

Not saying this reaction will happen with you but it is something to be aware of

Today I've been campaigning to add another dog to the house.

Currently there's only one actual canine inhabitant, but my dog that lives with my Uncle.. and his dog.. are generally here at least 2 or 3 days of the week due to his work commitments.

Anywho, I'm trying to adopt a little Corgi puppy girl. She's adorable and would make a fine psychotic addition to the household. Reason I decided I wanted this dog, I was on the Petfinder web site (my friend has an animal rescue center and I like to see if the dogs have found homes) and there was this little corgi pup on there with one brown eye and one blue eye, just like my first dog, so obviously, it was love at first sight.

The campaign begins.

I'm so glad to hear your grandma is going to be ok.  I'm sorry I didn't get on the board earlier to add my prayers, but I am wishing her well.  I hope you are holding up ok, I know how emotionally draining it can be.

Update on my dad:

They kept him on oxygen longer than they thought because his sats kept dropping when they took it away.  However, while I was at work on Tuesday, they decided to transfer him to Acute Rehab, even though they hadn't finished the heart monitoring yet.  Everyone there thought he would be in the hospital til Wednesday or today, but no such luck.

He is doing ok, I guess.  They are doing intense therapy, but my concern is that he isn't eating.  I know that is normal when you are in a hospital, but he is diabetic and on insulin, so I think he should be eating more than a couple bites of each meal.  I feel like the therapists are kind of cheating and hope that it is realized so they don't discharge him thinking he can get in and out of bed on his own.  His bed isn't going to move like the one is the hospital and there is NO way that my mom will be able to pull him up (she had neck surgery a few years ago and hasn't really been the same since---plus she is only 5-3 and my dad is 6-3, 200 & some pounds).  I am going to go in a little earlier than my mom because we have to leave in the afternoon and I want to get as much settled as possible before I leave (we'll be there Sunday, but you know there is always a skeletal staff and not the people I need to speak to).  He keeps breaking some of the restrictions.  The concern is if he keeps doing it, he is increasing the risk of dislocating the new hip.  I think part of the problem (besides his natural inclination not to listen to anyone) is that we were already concerned with his mental faculties and am not convinced he remembers everything he is told.  I am worried about leaving Mom alone with him, but don't have a choice.  I have to go back to work and Micah has to go back to school and we don't live close enough to commute from here.  Mom says she'll be ok.  This is all part of the reason I want to talk to some of the staff tomorrow.  He will probably be discharged Tuesday, but I think it depends who you ask.   ::)  I know she has really appreciated us being here and I think Dad has felt better having us there, but they understand that we have to go back, at least for a couple weeks.  We'll play things by ear and see what happens.

I have to give an oral presentation for English tomorrow, on an event in history as if we were part of it.
