Subject: Worst way to be laid off.

Written By: loki 13 on 09/23/07 at 6:18 pm

My daughter told me she was laid off from work. How she was laid off tells me she worked for a bunch of slugs,
cowards with no heart. She did secreterial work for a lumber company, on Thursday they had a company breakfast.
Friday was a picnic lunch, after lunch they told her, "see you Monday morning." Only thing is, she got a phone call
yesterday telling her they no longer needed her services. They couldn't even face her to tell her she was done.

That reminded me of the first time I was laid off from a job, almost in the same fashion. I worked a Friday during a
major snowstorm. There was 14 inches on the ground when I left work. An hour after I was home I got a call from
the foreman telling me the company was slow and I was laid off until further notice. I thought then, what a heartless
way to lay someone off. On a side note; I had tickets, 3rd row center, for Neil Young that night. Needless to say, it
was cancelled. What a bad night.

Anyone else have horror stories about being laid off?

My brother worked for a company for years.  He always did the overtime when asked, was very loyal(too loyal I would say) One day they asked him to come in on a Saturday, he didn't really want to, but they said they really needed the help.  He worked the day, extra hours, then when he got home they called him to tell him he was laid off.  Quite "coincidentally" the company was one that was self-insured and he had recently developed high blood pressure and needed medication.  He was laid off within a month of that.  They changed the description of the job enough that they were able to hire someone else to do what he had done and within two weeks the guy had an accident at work and went out on comp.  HAHAHAHAHAHA.  A couple of months later they got frazzled and realized they had let a very loyal employee go and called to see if he would come back.  Nope.  They actually called back 2 years after that hoping he had changed his mind.  Nope.

While it didn't happen to me, a friend told me that when the Tim Horton's closed in my area (there was only one at the time) the staff opened the store as usual, then some workers came and started boarding up the windows, and that was their first clue that the store was closing (the building eventually was demolished a new building built (much like the other one - to house another fast food place).

I think probably the story I heard was exaggerated some, but since the building did have planks over the windows, I guess it could be true.  :o

Man, that's just cold.  I hate employers who don't have the guts to tell you to your face that you're fired.  Perhaps she could sue the company for wrongful termination ?

Worst I've seen was one Burger King here when it closed. The workers didn't get any notice whatsoever - they came in the next morning to open, only to find a demolition company there, who told them the building was being gutted. I'm not sure if they ever got their final paychecks...

The same thing hapened at the Burger King here.  One of the workers who used to work there now works at a local video store, and she told me that apparently the owner (who owned both BK's here in town) wasn't paying his bills or something, and the place got closed without notice.  The employees showed up for work only to find the place was shut down.

Early this year, both Burger King's re-opened under new management in the same locations, but guess what?  Both locations just recently closed down for the exact same reason as before.  If they ever re-open again, I don't think anyone will be applying there.  Why work for a place that is only going to close down again w/out notice ?

If this ever happens contact the state, the unemployment office or Attorney generals office.  Wages are always are supposed to be paid, even with bankruptcies wages are the first bill paid, and in full.

In my first proper job I worked until 4.30 on friday and then got a phonecall to go to the personnel office. I was told that if I left then and there without a fuss I would get my overtime and holiday money, they even made me sign a piece of paper to say I wouldn't take them to a tribunal before i got my paycheck. Being young and naive and completely shellshocked I did what they asked and was then escorted off the premises! Of course i realise now it was completely illegal and i could have sued their arses off at a tribunal but such is life.

One of my brother's friends got to work on a monday morning and the locks had been changed and all the staff were locked out. They actually had to threaten to take them to court just to be allowed to get their personal posessions out of their desks and lockers!

I (and quite a few others) got 'the push' via the traditional brown envelope on our desks...

However, it wasn't exactly the 'worst' way to go, as we all knew that redundancies were in the air...it was just a matter of 'when'...

But the gushing crap inside the envelope stuck in the craw a bit... ::)

This isn't the worst compared to what has already been posted, but I went in to work (a previous job) on Monday morning and was promptly called into the Office Manager's office and fired on the spot.  I was working through a temp agency so I got paid every week (not enough to support my daughter on of course).  They knew I needed that paycheck so they let me finish the week.  They were sickening sweet to me the rest of the week.  The only good side was that it gave me a chance to say good bye to the people I did like (there were a couple).  I wouldn't have stayed if I could have afforded to leave that minute.

Hindsight being what it is, I figured out that I had been set up to fail without the lies that the OM believed.  I was hired as a medical transcriptionist.  I loved the job and was doing well at it; I even got to do the psychiatrist's notes because the nurse was impressed with my working knowledge of medical terms, diagnoses, etc. (I have a BA in Psych & I had to take medical terms when I was taking classes to be a court reporter).  However, I came in the next day to be told that I was no longer going to be doing medical transcription--I was now the new receptionist.  This would have been fine if I had ever BEEN a receptionist or if they had trained me.  Unfortunately, I never was a receptionist (and they knew that when they hired me) and they didn't train me on procedures, etc.  Guess how many times I screwed up out of ignorance?  The lies a particular therapist told were probably the final straw.  Still can't figure out why she didn't stick around to enjoy the fruits of her labor.

Karma?  I heard the place all but fell apart.  Not because of their firing me, of course, but maybe the way they treated me (and others) brought about the chaos.  A couple therapists quit and one of the case managers committed suicide.  My favorite one retired a while ago.  Glad I left when I did even if I didn't care for the circumstances.

It happened to me a year ago next month.I was laid off from Au Bon Pain in October 2006 for "business slowdown" or in another words could not multi-task.

"We'll have to let you go" If i had a dime for every time i hear that,i would never had to work for the rest of my life.

Being laid off is always awful. But quiting can be fun... ;)

One of my first jobs was at this place where i literally felt used and abused,i worked at this bar as a waitress for awhile and my boss was the most ignorant, sexist, abusive bastard, he loved to make his employers feel like s***,and we would take it cause we were all very young and in a really compromising situation.
One day he had this bright idea about changing our uniforms,he wanted us to wear this micro-minis with some hideous revealing tops, basically make us look like sluts,we said we wouldn't wear it and he was like "oh yes you will or all you bitches are fired" (with these exact words) i turned to him and said: "You know what? You want us to act like bitches, i can be one just for you",i grabbed the skirt and the top and ripped it to pieces, which was really easy cause it was some lame pvc material, and said: "See? Now I can't wear it." He went ballistic and i just laughed out loud, grabbed my stuff and slammed the door on my way out.
I was a little sad afterwards, cause i think i could've kicked him in the balls too!

I never been fired before, but being told that you are fired, on the weeekend, would kind of suck.

I'd say if you were way too drunk and couldn't remember the next morning. that'd really suck, especially if she was hot.
...another worst way would be with a hooker who could care less, like Jane Fonda in Klute, where the John is going at it, she's like "oh my angel! my angel"!! and then glances at her watch to see how much time he has left. that'd be pretty bad too.

I think he meant he doesn't believe you've never been fired!
