Subject: Getting Stitches....

What's your experience when getting stitches done. I have 9 stitches on my back right now from getting a mole removed the other day. I want to scratch the itch in that area so bad, but know I can't (plus layers of gauze and telfa pads are in the way from me shredding them apart.) So, what are your experiences with getting stitches?

The first time I was 3. One of my sisters was twirling around in the living room and I had to copy. We had a coffee table that had a very sharp corner and that corner came up and bit me on the lip. I was told that I had plastic surgery on it but I don't remember any of it. The only way you can tell is by looking really, really close, you can see a white line in that indent between my nose & lip.
The second time, I had a lumpectomy and they gave me stitches for that. I was knocked out during the procedure. The stitches dissolved so I didn't have to get them taken out.

Last time I had stitches was three in my left palm. I figured going back to the ER or a doctor to get them removed would be a waste of time, so I removed them.

I had stitches 3 times in my life.
Once when I was two(too young to remember).
Once when I was seven(hernia).
Last time was when they took out a plug of skin for a biopsy.

I've had about 3 incidents that required stitches:
Gum surgery in 1992
Wisdom Teeth this last May
Mole removal this last week

When I was about 9 I was playing with the neighbor kids. We were playing around an old car and I was sitting on the bumper at the time and kicked my leg back not realizing that the muffler was badly damaged. It created a deep 4 inch vertical cut on my calf. I am not sure how many stitches it required, possibly 20 or more judging from the size of the scar. I remember my brother calling to come inside so he can put a band-aid on it. ;D

When I was about 14 years old, I accidently put my arm through a window..therefore needing stitches in my wrist and fingers. It felt strange having them in there...and it hurt when they cut them out.

I got my first stitches when I was about 9-10 years old. I cut my thumb on a old fashioned push lawnmower. I have a permanant knob on the end of my thumb where the tip was almost cutoff. My older brother was pulling the mower down the sidewalk as we were going house to house to mow neighbors lawns for money and as he was pulling it, the blades were spinning so I was following behind him sticking leaves into the blades and watching them get chopped up when WAM! it I stuck one in too far and it cut the heck out my thumb. I ran home bleeding and my dad took me to the hospital and i got stitches. The last time was about 7 years ago, cutting up old credit cards with poultry kitchen shears. it slipped and cut my pointer finger on my other hand and I had to get stitches, but the worst part was the frikken injection/shot with the needle to numb it for stitching. that hurt worse than anything. :\'(

In June I had 65 stitches inside my mouth and in July I had a further 20 in there ! I have become quite an expert at cutting them out all by myself !

I don't want to jinx myself but I've never had any.....................
One of the guys at work had his scalp stapled earlier this month and I have to say it did look very impressive.

My sister had stitches in her mouth before she had her braces put on (she had several teeth pulled). That really scared me and I was afraid when my time came to get braces. Yeah, I had a bunch of teeth pulled but no stitches-which I was happy about.

I haven't had any either.
Me neither except for when I was small, a tiny baby. The doctors sewn my head up because I had "water on the brain".

:( oh dear. this is a sad thread. but maybe it will help to talk about it. try not to scratch "hot stuff". you know it's healing if it's itching my mother always said.
When I was 11 I tripped on a chair, fell forward and split my lip and busted a tooth and they stitched that. But at age 6 I got caught in a rock throwing fight between some boys and I got hit in the head. They stitched me very well, but I have this small bump on my head and I think it's from the healed wound. OO, this July I had dental surgery and they put stitches in my upper gums after treating my tooth. That was most annoying. and it felt sooo very strange to have all that extra stuff in my mouth. And it wasn't the stuff that disolves either, I had to go in and get them taken out! :P

Back in 2002, a large chunk of ice fell off the side of a shopping mall, and smashed me in the head, leaving a big bloody gash. I had to get rushed to the ER where they put like 6 stitches in me. I thought it was going to be super painful, but surprisingly i barely felt anything

I've had a few stitches in my tummy after gallbladder surgery and the usual ones they do after removing wisdom teeth. I also needed a few after having the demon child. He decided to claw his way out and left several really deep scratches that required a stitch or two. :P
My mom had some awesome stitches after surgery to fix blood clots. They cut open her stomach and both her legs (inner part where the leg meets the pelvic area). She had stitches and staples. It was cool to look at, although I'm sure she'd disagree.

Just had a few for my gallbladder surgery over a year ago. I was so out of it I didn't care what they did to me. ;D
Still have scars that are kinda interesting to run my fingers over when I notice them. (Yeah I'm weird)

Thanks :) I actually found out I am allergic to the tape that was keeping the bandages on. My aunt (who's a nurse) took it all off me last night and said I was all red (where the tape was) except for my wound, which was fine, lol. She put some polysporin on me and put a new bandage over stitches and told me to use paper tape instead. I feel SO much better now! I can't belive that the pain I was feeling was not from the wound but from the actually allergic reaction I was having to the tape.

I had my appendix removed when I was 12 and had several stitches for that. I didn't hurt when they were taken out. I also had stitches after Elizabeth and James were born. Thank god for gas and air!

The first stitches I ever had were also for a mole on my back. It was a long time ago, but I think I remember the itch being caused when i was dried out. Have someone change the bandage with and put some anti inch cream, or something to keep it lubricated.

Yes, my mother actually used some anti-itch cream the first day. Yet, this itching was really due to the tape we were using because I was allergic to it, but didn't realise it. I actually have changed my bandages everyday and put a new coating of polysporin on the stitched area to fight infection. Thanks for the tip! :)

I had oral surgery in 7th grade to have molars extracted. Those stitches just dissolved out, which was fine except they usually ended up in my food.
A few years ago, I had a lump removed from my upper arm. I thought it was going to go just like my dad's--no more lump, no scar, no trace of anything. I was wrong! Turns out the surgeon made the sutures too tight which restricted my range of motion and hurt like hell. I complained about it, but he told me to suck it up (basically). He relented and removed every other stitch. I could move and it no longer hurt. However, I ended up with a 3 inch scar on my arm.
My daughter has had 12 stitches in the bottom of her foot (when she sliced it open) and small stitches for her arthroscopic knee surgery.

Ouch! I am so sorry that happened to you. I wonder, did you and your dad have the same doctor? Sounds like he went through the same kind of surgery a lot better.
And your daughter. Yikes - 12 stitches! I just had cryosurgery on my foot, but it didn't require stitches as it's just freezing something off (in my case, a wart), so I just have a little bit of a scar, but not like it's gonna bother me - it's just my foot, lol ;D

The last time I had stitches was about 4 years ago, when I'd dropped a small shelf from about five feet up and the corner went right into my left foot (Ouch! :-[)...
I had to have a tetanus shot (as it had been a while)...and then they numbed the area around where they were going to stitch...
It was sore for a little while, but it healed nicely and there's only a tiny scar left as a reminder...

Ohh, I am glad just a little scar is left of that. That had to be painful! :-[

I had stiches in my mouth when I got my wisdom teeth pulled, and I have stitches in my belly button and on my abdomen right now from the surgery I had two weeks ago. They bothered me at first, but I think they're starting to disolve because I barely notice them any more.

No, we definitely did not have the same doctor (wish I had though). He has absolutely no scar or anything to show--can't even tell which arm it was on! I had no way of knowing my shoulder wouldn't be the same thing because they were the same type of surgery. He's the one who convinced me to have it done.
Yeah the gash on her foot went diagonally from just under the ball of the foot down to almost the heel on the other side. It was deep, too, from what she and my mom said (I had just gotten to Chicago on business for the week). It took years to heal--the itching is how we kept track. The scar is pretty small now, though.
I'm glad you didn't have to have stitches and hope everything will be fine!
