Subject: US cat 'predicts patient deaths'
Written By: Philip Eno on 07/26/07 at 9:30 am
A US cat that is reportedly able to sense when a nursing home's residents are about to die is baffling doctors.
Oscar has a habit of curling up next to patients at the home in Providence, Rhode Island, in their final hours.
According to the author of a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, the two-year-old cat has been observed to be correct in 25 cases so far.
Staff now alert the families of residents when he sits down next to their ailing loved one.
"He doesn't make many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die," David Dosa, a professor at Brown University who carried out the research, told the Associated Press news agency.

i read somewhere you can train dogs to diagnose cancer. they smell it before it shows up on any tests. you can also train them to detect kidney and liver problems in urine.

This article was in our morning paper. As much as I love cats, I'm not too sure that I would want that cat to curl up next to me. :-\\

Luckily the cats is in an Alzheimer /Dementia unit, so the patients are not aware that this little guy is around.

Here's a great gag. Spinkle a little catnip on the clothes of one of the staff at that home. They'll be cr@pping bricks.

I'm not surprised at all by this. Animals are very good at sensing illness, it's a built in mechanism to stop them catching whatever the other animal has. What is unusual is the cat lying next to them usually they will back away.

My friend told me about this the other day.. I heard this cat was so accurate that as soon as it curled up next to someone, the home staff would call the person's relatives and inform them that they were about to die.

About five of the patients died from heart attacks when the cat walked in the room.
