I don't rememeber exactly how it came about now, lol. But I think it was a combination of reading some of the song parodies as well as the sections on the main page (i.e. "Why are you an '80s fan"), as well as the board. Some of the old-school pop culture analysis made me bite the bullet and go, Hey this seems like a cool place. Think I'll join the crowd.

For me, it was because of the 1980's forum. Once I got here I then moved on to other areas. And at times I swear at it, but it is like Internet Heroin, I just can't stay away for long.

Nobody got me to join...I was doing a search on something that had to do with the 80's...and I stumbed upon it.
Ditto. I think it was a query for some very obscure lyrics that had made it to the lyrics board (either MC 900 Foot Jesus' Straight To Heaven or Intaferon's Get Out of London).
There's a lot to be said for putting otherwise-unobtainable lyrics onto the 'net and always being a few steps ahead of the "lyrics site" banner-ad-impression-with-occasional-futile-spyware-attempt sites that all seem to be drawing from the same one or two databases of lyrics (with identical typos and all!). Seeing an actual community where people would debate and/or correct wrong/obscure/unknown lyrics was pretty cool.
To that end, I'd encourage anyone who enjoys this site to find at least one track in their library and post partial lyrics to it to the lyrics board. Might be a few years before someone randomly googles it and finds that your post is the only copy on the 'net, but when they find it, they'll know they've found something interesting.

I was looking for a good 80s related messageboard that I could join, and believe it or not, I spent like a few weeks looking for one, and not once stumbled upon here via a google search :o
I eventually found inthe00s through a post I saw (on some other messageboard) made by someone who doesn't like me too much LOL

I was going crazy for years looking for this 80's tune and I got a response in 2 minutes. The people were so friendly and interesting I kept coming back. Incidentally, this is the only chat site I even visit. I love this place! :)

Managed to help some other people out on their quests for song info, most famously, Henk of all people. Strangely, when I joined as 70'sto80sGuy (later 'Mr. Mister') .. Henk was my first PM, and when I re-surfaced as 'Green Lantern' recently .... Henk was the first to contact me by PM! :o

I know I was looking for somebody. I'd recently cut a lot of my hair off, but still had a sort of pseudo-mullet thing going on and my friend Lucy told me I looked like somebody, so I googled them.. and this was one of the first links.

I use to frequent the Top Of The Pops board on the BBC until the whole boards and set up was pulled. In order to carry on with contact with fellow members, I was recommended to sign up here by fellow member. He himself does not post here, other members (and a troll) followed, and this has be my home since.

I typed in 'Best Beatles song' in Google, because I was curious to know what people considered their best songs, and found an inthe00s thread...That was about January 05. I didn't post that much til the start of 2006 and 'Decadeology' and all that started, and haven't really posted regularly for like a year now. I still like to browse now and then and post if I really feel like it, like this occasion...

Rice is probably most active in the Political forum. Like me, he leans conservative, and often butts heads with others over there.
I am most often found in the political arena, but am also found in all of the Pop culture boards. Mostly I comment on some area in which I am familiar, like music, movies, or TV shows. But I still avoid all the "This Vs. That" topics. That is probably why I do not post in those as often as I used to.

For me, the similarities have to do with the avatar (well, Rice's old avatar which I believe was a reference to the Green Hornet).

'Green Hornet' gives me a vague recollection of some comic book that was around way back. Don't recall if I ever read one. Guess I'm a bit of a JLA fan. Perhaps I should've picked Superman over GL, as he was/is my favourite superhero .... as he was drawn/ the stories of the 'silver age'/ 1960's. Not sure why I went for GL in the end ... perhaps that power ring gif that I had and have finally turned into a working avatar. As for DoctorFate, I reckon he was the Superman type equivalent of the Earth2 mob, being probably their chief 'head kicker' / awesomely powerful. Just like me ... ;) ;D

I found the board in a similar way...
I'd been searching the internet for lyrics quizzes to play, and somehow it brought me to this site. When I found the messageboard, I decided to post a question about a song I'd been trying for years to identify. Almost immediately, I had a response (though it wasn't the right song)...and I decided to stay since I found the people here to be very friendly. It's now been almost 8 years. 8)

I used to post on a misheard lyrics site called kissthisguy.com (I'd read about it in The Independent newspaper). It was a good site but started to go downhill, the owner stopped updating it or moderating the messageboards. Chucky G posted there and mentioned his own sites. I started posting here.

Well...I found this site as a link from amiright.com in late 2002; it seemed like a fun site so I started to do some posting in early 2003. Only as a guest, though. However, one year later, guest posting was disabled, so I decided to register an account. And I'm glad I did, because there are numerous things a member can do that a guest can't do!

That doesn't work for all us "old timers". Our accounts were wiped out when we switched to the new board and you will see most of us joining in April of 2004. I believe that I originally joined the board in Nov. of 2002.

For me it started with a search for a song parody to "Walk Like An Egyptian", it led to the song parody site amiright, I started submitting parodies on and off. I noticed that I accidently had two submissions of my first parody(due to an error on my part, I acccidently clicked the back arrow and then the forward arrow on the screen). The first reason I registered on here was to get that extra copy of that parody removed. Then I started using the boards more afterward. I mainly stayed on the song parody board early on, then gravitated to other boards.

That doesn't work for all us "old timers". Our accounts were wiped out when we switched to the new board and you will see most of us joining in April of 2004. I believe that I originally joined the board in Nov. of 2002.

Yes I know that. But WD has only been with us for two years, so he's not an "old timer." ;)
And like I said, I originally joined as a member in Feb. of 2004, after a year of posting as a guest. This is the 2nd board to which I have been a member longest. I've been a member at i80s since January 2005, though I don't visit there as much as I should :-[

he's done some work on it again in the past year.. I was checking it out last week. Guess my account is gone now though, and the messageboard is on some weird software I never even heard of before.
I haven't been there in the longest time. Probably not since my daughter was born in 1998.
If people that like this site post on other message boards, they should put a link back here in their sig or their profile. It could help send more cool people here like Karen (at least based on that one example). I'm going to put together a gallery of icons for all my sites this week or next, so if you have a particular size image in mind for a signature or something, let me know and I'll try to be accommodating.
Aw, shucks :-Science File forums. For a little while my sig there was "I can also be found here" with a link to inthe00s. That might work with a smallish logo.
I like reading threads like these, because it helps me get ideas on how to help spread the word of the site. I was hoping it was going to be more along the lines of why people created accounts instead of just posting as a guest.
Maybe the first time I joined it was because I didn't know you could post without being a member. :-\\ Then I was away from the boards for a while in 2001 when my son was born. I found the site again and was doing the quizzes and Taoist told me I should join. I'd totally forgotten that I had joined once, couldn't log in with the name I wanted and then decided to try and log in using one of my usual passwords and found I was already registered! It was definitely the quizzes that attracted me to the site at first.

The obscure lyrics. We've got a pretty small, but very good, braintrust of people here who can dig deep into a song and figure out what makes it ticks. I've already said that a year or so ago, but it really does bear repeating. If you're reading this and you know something about an obscure lyric or sample (and especially if you're tired of googling for lyrics and seeing obviously wrong answers in the various lyrics databases out there on the 'net), come on in, make your way to the lyrics board, and post a correction. It won't make it into the lyrics databases, but it will eventually get indexed by Google.

Sorry if I sound a bit strange for you, but I'm from far ( Spain ), I'm a bit mature (close to fifty), and the first of all I'm learning English just two years ago, so that means it is a great challenge to me to write down here. ;)
What was it ? well I like fun and I like to peer the funny side of the things.
People I've found in here it seems to me like gently and willing to share, their comments told me that.
I love all kind of songs, also their parodies whereupon I can't go another better place than this.
I'll need time to learn how things work, but since I'm a stubborn sailor, I think I'll get to cope with it to turn the gibber :D into sense. But I'm afraid I need some help so I wonder if some of you are willing to hand me a hand whenever I cry.
At first I was afraid I was petrified keep thinking I could never post in this site, but I spent so many nights keep thinking I was wrong...so I decided to dive into this pool.

Oh yeah! I knew I forgot something last night. I forgot to link to the awesome surreality of 2NU, who released "This is Ponderous" in 1991.
You may even end up with a better recording than your old tape, because they're offering a re-recorded version of it (and several of their other works) for download from their web site.
And that's the reason I stuck around. Things like Michelle's post are the kinds of search queries that even the Googleplex isn't smart enough to do yet. They'd like to, but our best AI researchers are still years away from being able to replicate something as simple as a braintrust of music geeks who can pick out a song, even if all you remember are a few lines or a few bars of music. We still need human brains for that, and this forum, even though it's small, has a pretty diverse range of musical knowledge. Nobody here knows everything, but combined, the forum's probably capable of answering just about any off-the-wall musical query the Internet can throw at it.

I always remember myself in search of funny times ;D and good songs.
Since I got plugged into Internet the great deal began. I got all the world at my hands and from my house I could ride upon a mouse. I only needed a key, what it was no other than read and write the same way as when and where I would ride.
I've never been in the States, nor other English country, and I guess I won't, so I started learning as I was surfing.
As a sailor, I've never minded being pitched and tossed not by waves and winds at sea 8), neither by jokers and morrons ::) in network. So I threw off bowlines and prejudices and lifted my anchor not in my ship but at my PC screen, and here I go through these stormy waters , which so far I can't understand all that good that I wanted, but it's no trouble to me cuz worse things happen at sea, you know?.....and I'm still alive. ::)
One day of little boredom, I don't remember how the thing it went at all, I just hit AmIright and right away I "fell" madly in love.
I found the site plenty of songs and jokes. Just what I was looking for long.
From now on I'm free to do what I desire, but show old Oney who's the boss
Almost everything I've learnt about your English Universe, came, come and will come to me from what I hear and read, so you will probably find some lines from songs, proverbs and sayings in my messages.
In the end, life is a game, take and give his trade, and as the Monty Python said..I always look on the bright side of life...and it will be for long ;)

Like Ladybug and Karen (Ceramics Fanatic) I came here looking for a song. It was bugging me for years as I saw the pop video when I was little, so I made it my first 'mission' to find it when I got the internet for the first time around 2003. The website this forum was based on had the answer for me - after thinking for so many years it was the Pet Shop Boys, I found out the house-wrecking video was 'Lose your love' by Blancmange.
Oddly enough, if I ever watched 'Flight of the Navigator' before coming to this forum I may never have turned up here because the video was on it, lol.

As far as I know - yes, you are. There's not a lot of people from mainland Europe on this site. I'm from The Netherlands, and I'm about the only regular European poster over here (excluding our UK members).
We had a young girl from Estonia (?) for a while, and a girl from Luxembourg... I know there's at least one other member from The Netherlands, but she doesn't post a lot.

Like some of you guys, I found the site through a google search about the '80s. :)
Actually, that was at the time when I was just starting to get an interest in the pop culture of the '80s and '90s beyond just my personal nostalgia for them. I lurked for a while though. I found the site in December of '05, but didn't join until February of '06.
