Subject: How do you survive the summer heat?
Written By: coqueta83 on 06/29/07 at 11:32 pm
Well, another summer has come! I plan on staying indoors as much as possible, stay near the air conditioning vents, drink plenty of cold water, and if I absolutely have to be outside, to wear lots of sunscreen and always have water with me at all times!
Have fun and stay safe this summer 2007! :) :)

Yes, when it gets really hot, I stay in my air conditioned house. I wish I lived by the beach though...I'd be there almost always.

I try to get out as much as I can. I don't have A/C in my place, and the crappy fans I have don't really do the trick. And of course the A/C in the car doesn't work :(

Drinking a ton of water, keeping the fans on (no AC) and trying to stay in rooms with good ventilation.

One of the things that makes me so glad I grew up in Europe is that there's no A/C there and bedrooms are always upstairs - Heat rises.
I remember down near Marseilles, it being over 100 degrees for extended periods of time, having no a/c and just crappy fans.. thus, when it gets up to 100+ here, It doesn't bother me all that much, plus I'm in a basement and have a/c anyway, so it's nice. ;D

The temperature rarely hits 30°C / 96°F here, but when it does it's a very dry heat so it's quite nice. The idea of getting up around 40 (106) seems foreign to me. I don't know how I'd cope.
I just have a fan on inside when it's hot. An A/C or heat pump (one that blows cold air too) would be nice but very expensive. Drink heaps of water and wear loose fitting, light coloured clothing.

We do have a crappy A/C here in the office (left by our last tenant). I really hate A/C (especially this one) and would rather not use it if I can. However, there are some days when the heat and humidity is just so unbearable that it is needed (like earlier this week). We also have fans throughout the house. When things get really bad and we are in a room without the A/C, I take a wet paper towel and wipe myself with it. Sometimes I will even sleep with it. But right now, it is VERY cool. The windows are open and the temp is very pleasant (64 degrees F.)-my kind of weather.

Since I'm going to be working this summer at Pathmark outdoors in the parking lot,I must consume a lot of water so as I don't get dehydrated.
Plus at home in my room I have this old Westinghouse A/C and if you leave the door closed for a couple of hours, when you arrive in,It feels just like Nome,Alaska. You'd need a blanket or sweater for during the evening hours.

You're lucky, lol - there isn't even air conditioning in the townhouse complex I'm in. It's an upstairs unit, so the ceilings are pretty high downstairs, but the bedrooms can be really uncomfortable this time of year.

Yeah, I think some of the units have it (they're not all connected, so it's probably installable per house), but we usually just use some big fans during the Summer. Although the bedrooms are still stuffy, because the ceiling in here is about 10 feet, lol.
BTW, I did a search online recently, and I found out it was built in 1979 (there's even a picture I saved of it - now, that was a real BTTF feeling! ;) ), so maybe it wasn't as common then. Even that recently, this part of San Jose was kinda rural compared to now.

When I lived in Texas, I had a neighbor that would set her A/C at about 50 in the summer claiming she couldn't stand the heat. Ok, I can buy that, but then she would set her heat about 85 in the winter because she couldn't stand the cold. ??? ??? I just didn't get it. I could understand if she kept the temp about the same year round but she didn't. I really hated to see her electric bill.

In some tribes in Africa they wear black clothing. Although this absorbs the maximum amount of heat it sets up convection currents as the hot air near the surface of the garment then rises, thus introducing a small element of personal cooling.

I have always wondered about that, so the clothing develops it's own draught?

The paper I have (Nature, vol. 283, pgs 373-375, 1980) says that the exact mechanisms isn't understood but is likely to be a sort of chimney effect. The skin temperature of the person was the same whether they were wearing a white robe or a black robe.

Temeratures generally range from 20°C-30°C between December and March. The mercury goes above 30°C about 5-10 times a year, in which it's relatively tolerable, depending on what you're doing in that heat. Wouldn't wanna be cherry picking on one of them days. :P

Just wait for the following day and it will rain.
Rain sometimes doesn't make the air cooler,it makes it more humid.

We are lucky here to have central air conditioning. We don't run it all day just when it gets really unbearable and to make it comfortable at bed time. Another useful thing we have is a fan in the upstairs ceiling. As the day cools off we open the windows and switch the fan on. It sucks cool air throughout the house.

well, that sounds very cozy! I love sleeping in my room when it's cool...and then having to put on a blanket...that is very comfortable temps for me.
If I had my way my house would be like a meat locker. But in view of energy consumption, environmental issues ect, I have my a/c set at 75.
But I live in Fla a transplant from The northeast, I miss the cold weather.
