I'd stick it in a high yield savings account or money market fund and retire as I could live off the interest alone for the rest of my life.

I'd pay back the inlaws, with interest. Then I'd use some of it to get my dad the surgery he needs. Whatever is left over can go into savings or help my family with the bills.

Actually, now that I think about it, what I would do is stick $250K in the savings account, $250K in a money market fund, invest the rest in large and small caps, and in about six years it should double. Then I'd move the money into savings, take some of it out to pay cash for a house wherever we decide to go, get a new car, and that'll leave the original million sitting in the high yield savings to give me $$$ for the rest of my life :)

I'd pay off my mortgage and cars, save some for the kids college, buy a summer home, remodel the kitchen and get a boob job. ;D
