this might not be a good time or place to tell you i went to a furry convention once.

when i was on that plane that almost crashed the airline felt bad for nearly killing me so they gave me a 200 dollar voucher. so this guy trace beaulieu, who i worship -- crap! i left him off my favorite celebrities list! -- i'd been waiting for him to make a public appearance somewhere, anywhere, turns out he's doing this convention in florida. i got this voucher so i figure what the eff, i tell the popmatters people i wanna cover it and i go to florida for the weekend. they said it was a "furry" convention but i'd never heard the term before so i had no idea what i was in for.

poor trace beaulieu. he did this whole Q&A, nobody gave much of a damn about him anyway cuz he's a puppeteer, not a damn mascot, so i got to ask all the questions. which was cool. but he says this thing about, okay, you're witnessing the down period of my career, here. and the next day when we're all in this conference room watching grown men dressed up like coyotes and playing with beach balls it was kinda hard not to see his point. i kept looking over at him and he's just got this stoic expression on his face. i wanted to go up to him and shake him and say, you were the mastermind behind mystery science theater! you're a comic genius! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE? write a book or something! you could be doing better than this!

they had an auction and they were selling all these different furry suits and there was this crappy one nobody wanted and i felt bad so i put in a ten dollar bid for it, thinking, well, what if somebody made this thing? they're gonna feel awful. anyway, once i bid, someone else will bid. but no one else did so i won it. turns out it was for a little kid so i just got drunk and put it on my head, like, hunter style, so the face was on my forehead and the skin of it went down my back. like a pelt.

okay. turns out if you wanna piss off a furry, this is exactly the thing to do. they have this whole thing about how they're embodying the animal as a spirit familiar, it's some sorta mystical crapola. so hanging a cute fluffy puppy dog off your head like you just killed it is a total sociall gaffe. but i was just there to see trace beaulieu anyway.

my favorite: there was this little angry dude, who i think just happened to be at the hotel. he was like, you know the kid who's sorta small so he gets a major attitude about it? that was this guy. he's got a tattoo and rolls his cigarettes in his sleeve and is just all around a tough character. first part of the weekend we pegged each other as non-furries and so we'd hang, he'd be smoking marlboro lights and muttering, who the fk are these people, anyway? what the hell is this? let's kick these people's asses! then i catch up with him on sunday and he's all, i've decided next year i'm gonna be a raccoon.

they insisted the whole sexual thing is overblown, but i'd never heard of furries so i had no idea it was supposed to be sexual, or that they'd done that hbo special on it, or the vanity fair article. i never saw anything untoward but i did feel sorta embarrassed for everybody there.

i think a lot of people castigate them because everyone else is and no wants wants to be the one person singled out and made fun of. it's a rather craven impulse, really, much akin to when someone asks for volunteers and everyone takes a step back.

a lot of things are like that. i mean, if people wanna dress like squirrels and hump things it's really no skin off my nose.

at least one of those guys i know was really cool. level-headed, didn't have any obvious sexual hangups. he was an EMT on an ambulance, on weekends he got done up like a mascot and went to hospital terminal wards to cheer up kids dying of cancer. everybody would hate on him just like they hated on the rest of these guys. oh, well. that's the world we live in, it's the one we've made.

I've been one of the people making jokes about this and I can tell you why I'm doing it.  Because I'm entertaining myself.
