Subject: Soliciting for an Interview

Written By: Tia on 12/08/06 at 2:37 pm

Has anyone ever done this? There's someone i want to interview (her identity is rather obvious) and I'm not sure how to phrase the request. I drew up the thing below... i'd be eternally! grateful to anyone who looked it over and pointed out anything that might be stupid or improvable before i send it. any other pointers would be totally appreciated too!

i don't think i'm going to use all those clips. probably just the top four. thanks!

***

I understand that xxx is the agency representing the actress Kim Richards. I am a writer for PopMatters.com, an online popular culture magazine with one million unique readers, and I wanted to ask about the possibility of arranging a phone interview with Ms. Richards for a profile I hope to run in PopMatters next year. This article will coincide with the release of her new film, "Black Snake Moan," in February 2007. The interview would take only an hour or so and can be arranged at her convenience.

I can promise a quality article that will offer publicity for Ms. Richards, the new film, and your agency. I have interviewed directors Bob Sitch and Jonathan Mostow; Laura Zigman, the author of the bestseller "Animal Husbandry"; and others. I have also written dozens of other articles and features for PopMatters as well as the popular online magazine Alternet.com. Clips are provided below.

I can be contacted at xxx,  cell phone at xxx, through the editors at PopMatters (editor@popmatters.com or zarker@popmatters.com), or at the ground mail address below. Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,

Michael Ward

thanks. maybe.

it occurs to me it'd be dumb to send it on friday afternoon anyway, so that stuff piles up in their inbox all weekend and it gets lost. so i'll probably sit on it till monday morning, gives people lots of chances to try and shoot holes in it in the meantime. :)

Well, I've never actually done this before, but if I were going to sell myself (i.e. with a job search or something to that effect) I think I would follow the same format.  I'm not sure about the psychological impact of length in a "down on my knees begging" type letter, but if you wanted to expand a bit on the feedback of your articles (like, "After my article was published, Laura Zigman thought I was the uber-1337" but more eloquent) that couldn't hurt.

it's an interesting question, it's kinda a reversal in that most of the time i think agencies are asking publications for interviews rather than the other way around. so it's sorta like i'm going, here's a letter asking if you would like for me to hire you. but it reads like a job application cover letter. i think the length might get to be a problem if i added another paragraph going, here are people who've given me good feedback.

you know what i could do though? maybe throw in a little phrase saying, below are clips and feedback from other people who have reacted to my stuff... and then add another clip or two to the list of clips. hmm, thanks for the suggestion, i got to smoke on this a bit.. 8)

After reading the letter I'm struck with a couple of questions:

1. What are you going to wear to the interview?  Might I suggest an Buckingham Palace Guard's uniform?

2. Have you given really serious thought to what might happen to you if you are in the actual presence of Miss Kim?  Perhaps you might want to bring an entourage along.  Not only would it give you added street cred, she'd be completely impressed with your caliber of friends.  I would be happy to join you, and I'm sure we could get Rice and Jess, Sister Morphine, and Gis to come along.  I'd invite Davey Thrashmister, but I don't think he is allowed out in public.

3. You realize that you'd have to interview her about the actual project, right?  I don't think you'd be allowed to discuss Escape to Witch Mountain for the entire hour.

Seriously, the request looks perfect, and requires no revision, and I also have no doubt you'll win the interview.  Which brings me to my next question...

4. Aren't you scared s***less to meet her in person?

Being a phone interview, I don't think Ms. Richards would care what Tia wore ;)

i live on the east coast and i believe she's on the west, so it would probably be a phone interview. i've done them before, you get this little spy gadget from radio shack, chit chat with the guy (so far it's all been guys) for a little while, then transcribe the interesting bits or write out an article basically describing the conversation with highlights.

my daydream though is she'd call and say, oh, phone thing would be fine but it turns out i'm actually in your neck of the woods for so-and-so so maybe we could do it over a drink. or better yet, stop by my hotel downtown!

i did an in-person interview for this dude ken hollings who i also had major fanboy love for, and seriously i had to stop by a bar and down some stiff drinks to even get up the nerve to walk into the room. my palms were all sweaty, heart racing, it really DOES make ya nervous.

laura zigman was also quite harrowing. that was in person.

alex haley ghost wrote the autobiography of malcolm X based on a single night's conversation. they sat up all night one night just talking about his life and mr. haley wrote a whole book out of it.

Great book.  Jess has Roots and I have the Malcolm X book.  She read X, so I guess now I have to read Roots.

I wonder if it would do you better to send the request on Tuesday morning, since Monday is such a catch-up day.  On Tuesday nothing really happens at work so maybe you'll have a better chance of getting noticed?

It's not in person?  I'm stricken...

You should wear the uniform anyway.

i'd probably try and do it half and half. half about BSM, working with sam jackson and justin timberlake and getting back into show biz and all that, and then the other half about her lustrous lifelong career, up to and including "devil dog: the hound of hell."

it'd be tough because i doubt i'd be able to see the new movie before it came out, and i'd definitely wanna time the interview to come out with the movie. so i'd have to interview her first, talk about the movie sight unseen, write up the feature/interview, then try and see the movie on an advanced screening (which is usually like two days before the movie comes out), and do a straight-up review to coincide with the interview.

i might not even wanna talk about WM that much. i already did that huge article about it and i can't imagine she's not sick of it.

wouldn't that be killer? sometimes they go on press junkets and travel to coincide with a new release so i guess there's a theoretical possibility something like that might be in the offing, but i wouldn't count on it. now if it were up to me i'd fly out to LA in a new york second to interview kim richards' best friend's nephew's plumber but i probably better not let on im quite that eager.

You might want to include some of the questions that you plan on asking her. And I wouldn't include the question, "Will you marry me" or anything like that.  ;)

Appearing on space ghost is an excellent pre-requisite for a actress you plan on worshipping . Other than Kim's case, space ghost knows how to get them to reveal their true character.  was MaryAnn on space ghost?  I like the praying mantis dude. he's diabolically cool. If Julie Andrews or Barbara Eden wasn't so old, I'd go for one of them.

i was thinking they were actally really nice to mary ann-slash-dawn wells. she's, seriously, like 60, now? still perfect. it's very weird. makes you wonder what she did.

and she has a boot camp! she knocks you around and calls you a maggot! and what does kim richards have? a line of retail fake jewelry.

oo! i think it's starting to work! dawn wells is starting in instill a partial kim richards eclipse.

here's a question.

i have my suspicions she's a natural brunette. should i ask her?

You silly duck, you can see quite clearly that she's a natural blonde. She's been blonde since she was a kid. Some of us natural blondes have varying shades that darken or lighten with things such as sunlight, hormones, etc..  You can't judge by her eyebrows either. I know many natural blondes that have naturally darker eyebrows.

Now just put that silly question to rest..!

that only makes me love her more.

not that i care about her hair color.

it's just there were some issues that called her natural color into doubt. for example, the fact that her younger sister has appeared on television (she's also an actress) many times as a brunette.

for instance... here's a telltale pic of kim combing kyle's hair...

http://kimrichards.net/Kim/clippings/gmbc-Richards(clippings)-03.jpg

and then there's this...

http://kimrichards.net/Kim/clippings/gmbc-Richards(TigerBeatAug79)-01.jpg

i can dig different shades and tricks of the light and whatnot, but c'mon! that's suspicious, yo. look at those roots! they pretty much reach down to her neck!

you've known me long enough to know i could care less if she's a brunette! but you also known me long enough to know that of course i want to know the truth....

Yes she's got roots there..but they are DIRTY DISHWATER BLONDE ROOTS.. LOL

I do a little sumthin sumthin to brighten my naturally blonde ,  but maybe naturally mousy blonde hair.. but that doesn't mean it's not natural. :P
Besides, I like to think of myself as a natural brunette that happens to have blonde hair. Brunettes seem to be more respected, whereas blondes get typecast as ditzy, fizzy and full of air.

i dunno, that looks pretty black to me!

yeah that's true about brunettes. but then again blondes have more fun and that whole thing. it also has the same advantage as blue eyes over brown -- recessive gene, so more prized. in theory. in reality, normal guys could care less. not like you chicks and your height issues. good lord! >:(

eh, i'll send a followup. it probably WOULD be worth doing, it might even be better if the article came out a week or two after the movie.

maybe something like this...

"Hi, I just wanted to send a followup about Kim Richards' appearance in the upcoming movie 'Black Snake Moan' with Christina Ricci and Samuel Jackson. Ms. Richards is a bit of a "cult" figure with thirty-somethings who remember her from her many roles in the 70s and 80s and has been out of movies for quite a while, so I was curious to find out if she was participating with anything press-related to coincide with the release of BSM. I'd like to do a short to medium-sized feature about her return to film for PopMatters.com, an online magazine I write for, and I've already cleared it with my editors. But it would be continent on her availability to participate in a short interview. Thanks, Mike Ward."

a little less involved than the last one.

they weren't saying what her role was, she's playing christina ricci's "white-trash" mom. oh, tia, how far you've fallen!

Subject: Re: Soliciting for an Interview

No, I think you should say, that you are following up. Also, I think you should also say, "Please let me know...." or "Please respond..."  in otherwords, don't leave me hanging like you did the first time around. (without saying those words of course).

naw, that's okay. i was talking with some other folks who've done this sort of thing before and they say it doesn't really pay to fuss over the inquiry too much. either they're doing interviews or they're not, or there's something else technical going wrong, like it's not going to the right department. but a request probably won't get thrown over because of a matter of wording.

I, admittedly, don't know anything about interviewing people, but I wonder if adding a few sample questions of what would be in the interview might make your request stand out or at least garner some support, if they know what's likely to come, they may be more willing to cooperate.

Just an idea, take it for what it's worth.  :)

i wonder if marlboro paid for that product placement. evidently her character gets beat up in the beginning and she actually spends most of the movie wearing truly grotesque black eye, swollen-lip makeup. all the teenage boys are like, dayum, look at that! i can't wait to check THIS movie out! but they might be disappointed. not a lot of people are into the black eye-and-swollen lip look, except... well, i won't name names.

that's a good idea. me and my friend jason are gonna do a street theater thing where we play led zeppelin songs on guitar and drums outside the theater, because the movie's very music-oriented. we're gonna be "bad zeppelin."

best case scenario, we make the style section of the paper, she reads about it, and falls hopelessly in love.

worst case scenario, we make the metro section of the paper (specifically, the crime beat), and she doesn't. i'm not really sure what the whole permitting thing is gonna be like. but it'll be fun in any case.

okay. new idea, a book about 70s child stars. but not the boring, obvious ones like jodie foster and ally mcgraw, interesting, offbeat ones like the kid from nanny and the professor who committed suicide, and the kid from "sigmund and the sea monsters." and mason reese.

and, of course...

the idea would be to talk about the deep-structure problems of constucting a credible semblance of innocence in such a cynical and disillusioned time. i think it's a good idea.

but i need more good notions of actors to include. anyone remember any child actors that have since been largely forgotten?

she's like, second from the last on the website, out of like ten parts. it's not a big part, alas. she's just of that age where for women it's gonna be hard to get a lot of meaty parts. it's sad but true.

i'm thinking back on the land of the lost guys and i'm not sure there's any good stories in it -- i might be wrong. the thing is, the whole story of their life has to play out in an interesting fashion... like, dude, mark lester? last role at 18, then, lifelong problems with alcohol and drugs, then becomes (not a professor, unfortunately, although he might be that too) but an obstetrician or something, his website is open right now on another browser i've got, and... AND... longtime friend and defender of michael jackson. :o there's GOTTA be an amazing story behind that.

how about melissa sue gilbert? she did whatsherneck on little house AND a bunch of really awesome afterschool specials. it was funny, this is after the time i'm thinking of but we started talking about small wonder and everybody was, hey, who was that little kid who played the android alien whatever chick? and i was, i dunno, but i'm sure she went on to a life of drinking, drugging, divorce and misery. and it turns out... she found jesus and after a successful B+ college stint is now working in... i dunno, shoes, or something. totally healthy and well adjusted.

i mean, i don't want it to be all morbid, but something about it has to be... off, somehow. interesting, quirky. were any of the LH or patridge family cats like that? i don't even know.
