Have you ever seen a singer and thought "To look at them, you don't expect them to have a voice like that?"

- Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies) I used to be convinced that he lip synchs. I mean a thin dude like him with that deep voice? I still find it hard to believe LOL

Rick Astley was my first thought...
So, Kirsty MacColl, now that you mention it. She has that raspy (<--correct adjective?) voice, but, for her, it's an asset...

Listen to him talk. I've seen interviews and stuff.. he really has that deep of a voice.

Anyway.. my own:
Daniel Johnston (as a skinny little kid, I could see it.. but not the way he is now)
James Mercer (The Shins.. he sounds like he'd look more annoying then he does)
Elijah Blue Allman (Deadsy.. his image implies it, but not he himself)
Gary Numan (I wouldn't imagine that voice from anything human)

Bonnie Tyler has a raspy voice too.
I think it got even raspier when she had some sort of surgery on her throat
-Sandra Cretu sounds suprisingly good live as she does on her albums- despite the fact that she has a smoking habit. I'd pay to see her and Peter Schilling- because he's a great live performer too!!

She never became popular in the US, though her 1987 Christmas duet Fairytale of New York with the Pogues is sort of a cult favourite. Matt Dillon makes a cameo appearance in the video

Christina Aguilera.....to hear her talk, you'd think she had this really "poppy" voice, but she's surprisingly soulful 8)

I have to agree with Rick Astley. I thought he was a big black guy until I saw the video for his song "Never Gonna Give You Up". Another singer/group I was surprised by was UB40.

Shazia Manzoor. She's a pop singer in Punjabi, from Pakistan. She has a very lovely voice, and yet, she looks like a schoolteacher.
I say "pop", however her music incorporates many traditional elements of Punjabi music.

Here's a long forgotten one from the UK ...
John Rocca of the 80s group Freeez. They had a few UK hits in the early 80s, one in particular called "I.O.U." which made the Canadian Top 40 in 1983. I grew up in the 80s hearing this song all the time, but when I first saw the video for it in the mid 90s, I was shocked to find out it was not sung by a woman :o
There is a speaking part in the song that I knew was male, but I had no idea he sang all the parts in the song :-[
