Subject: Would you have paid a dating service (10 years ago) $2K to find you a mate?

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 08/17/06 at 1:12 pm

Okay, my mom is (or was) dating a man who told her about 10 years ago, he paid a dating compant $2000 dollars to assist  in finding him a mate. She and I agreed that it was a little over the top to do such a thing, but yet ten years ago we didn't have the Internet catering to our dating needs, in whicih it did make it more difficult to find someone and sort of prescreen them before you actually met. So, my question here is: Would you have done such a thing ten years ago?

Simply no, but the idea of running a dating service company has just entered my head.

No. but that's me. Even in times of loneliness & longing for a someone, I wouldn't have done that, firstly because I think that it's too much money and secondly I prefer to hunt on my own  8)  at least when I was single. If I was going nowhere in finding a date/mate and had $2000 to blow I still wouldn't do it. instead I'd do like Patrick Dempsey in the cute film Can't Buy Me Love and pay the foxy cheerleader $2,000 to date me for a month and then all the other chicks would get in line. (hopefully) I like that movie. I never felt bad when I was alone, the loneliness of not having a girlfriend was just a part of life, and that If I was patient, I'd meet someone cool eventually. I didn't mind waiting it out.

^^ I think Mike mentioned getting married in 1984, so he was maybe 28 years old? That's not too young... just bordering his 30's.

Maybe I confused you with somebody else, sorry.  I was thinking for some reason you were like 20 when you got married.

Yeah, I agree with Mike the same. I mean, even if I were rich - I still wouldn't do that, just like I wouldn't go on a reality show and have them set me up with strangers picked by strangers who don't know me. I know it's a bit idealistic, but I think you can find your mate fairly easily just through fate and good timing and the right moment. It's all about when you are ready and that person is ready, and BAM! destiny steps in...  :)

10 years ago, I have already met the love of my life so the answer would be no. (Of course I was flat broke at the time, too.  :-\\ )

I married my first husband at 19 (which was a BIG mistake) and even after that marriage ended, I was not ready for another one until about the time Carlos came into my life. Yes, he came into my life at the right time. If we had started dating even about 5 years earlier than we did, I wouldn't have been ready.

well said Kristen, ideally that's the way I see it happening, but it's hard to wait & be patient especially when nothings happening.

excellent point  ;D

I understand. I mean, I never dated in HS, even most of my college years - I used to sorta shell up - but I think that's because I wasn't ready. It wasn't that people weren't interested in me.

People aren't interested in me...

Every time I go out somewhere its like to all of the women encounter im not even there.  I never attract any kind of attention at all, its frustrating.  And I certainly don't know how to create it on my own...

I felt a lot like you did at that age, and I know how frustrating it is...

Hang in there... you will meet your soulmate one day, probably when you least expect it... :)

It's true. Patience is the key. I never expected for people to approach me whereever I was, and if they did, great.. but I wasn't going to expect it.

10 years ago I never knew of a dating service and I wasn't really into one of those.

If I have to pay someone to find me a husband, I might as well get used to crying myself to sleep at night.

I would hate to have to give money to a stranger and tell them to find me a husband because I wasn't doing a good enough job on my own.  That would put me in a depression that would last a while.  I'm not the world's most social person, but if my skills are lacking that bad, I might as well give up and just be single.  I don't think it would be worth it at that point.  That's just me.  I happen to know a lot of people who found a great spouse out of dating services and legitimately wanted to use them.

Which dating service are they referring to?

That's why it's better to find someone without paying people to do it for you.

Okay, let's move this on to the other topic that devoted to advice on dating... we've already hashed this over in other threads so maybe we can keep this one on topic this time around.

Sometimes advice will never be enough. We can only offer so much counseling.

What should we talk about now?

no, I would never pay money to have someone find a date for me. I feel that it's better to do things like that on your own, or let nature take its course.

Does anyone know what you actually get for two thousand dollars? Is it just a 1 date guarantee? If so, then that's a ripoff, unless they are trying to help you find a mate. I guess if I hadn't had any luck on my own, & few skills to work with, or if I didn't have the time to look for prospects on the horizon & I felt 2 thousand dollars was a good investment then why not under those circumstances. But I don't think I would need to pay a dating company, I may as well just bribe someone myself.
Anyone here wanna go out? I'll pay you $2,000  8)
